I started archery after 9 years of range shooting. I could definitely say that after the basic course made with the recurve bow i "saw the light" when i used for the first time a compound. Compounds are definitely much more like a rifle and i loved them almost immediately. They have a trigger, a real sight and when you aiming you really feel like youre holding a weapon. With the recurves i never felt anything similar.. Im sure that some people would find the traditional bows more funny to shoot, but when it comes to precision, raw power and hunting performance its a no contest.. Compounds are on another planet.

I've shot both styles of bow and now I just shoot a recurve. It's just me and a simple bow. If I'm in the zone, I'm hitting the target. If I'm off I know it's not the bow. I sometimes shoot with a group. Of course with 4-6 people you need to keep it interesting so low score normally buys the first round after we get done. I'm normally the only one with a traditional bow and can't compete on the longer shots at a normal walking range. I also rarely end up buying the first round because I know with a large group someone will have an equipment failure with all that high tech equipment. It doesn't take much to knock a pin sight out of alignment or have a trigger malfunction. Unless I break my bow or lose all my arrows I will at least finish the course. Yes, I carry a second used ( already stretched) string and I wear a glove so I don't have much to worry about for equipment.

These days u can have the best of both. ILF has a place in barebow target & hunting. But a target recurve bow is 68" to 70" & most hunters r shooting 56" to 62". If u r not a newbie that has been bowhunting for a while & want to go trad & just want to hunt then this would be a realistic $ breakdown. A flagship bow will go for $1000-$1400. The same equivalent in trad with a ILF bow for hunting would run u $550-$700. That's riser, limbs & string. To be as ethical as possible your arrows & broadheads will run u a little more than some guys r running through their compunds. I highly suggest to start with a lower poundage limb that will be easy for u to build up your muscle memory while giving u a chance to develop strong form. After that u can go a little higher limbs with more or some carbon in them. I shoot a lower poundage/less carbon composite limb for training & hunt with a limb that has just a few more lbs. but quite a bit more carbon in it. The training limb is more forgiving & the hunting limbs pack a punch. Any road u choose don't go with too big of a boat with not enough motor so u will not be able to get the boat up to plane. 🎉

Bee America compounds outshoot crossbows. It’s a common misconception that crossbows shoot far “like rifles”.
@Intranetusa4 жыл бұрын
@@davidlinihan3626 That is highly dependent on the model. Power is going to be mainly determined by draw weight x powerstroke. Overall, it is easier to have and use a crossbow more powerful than a compound bow, but some crossbows with a short powerstroke + higher draw weight will be out-shot by compounds with longer powerstroke + lower draw weight. But the strongest crossbows with much high draw weights and decently long powerstrokes will outshoot the strongest compound bows. The Ten Point Nitro XRT crossbow for example has a 16.5-17 inch powerstroke and a draw weight of 225lbs. That will out-shoot something like the higher tier compound bows with up to a 30-31 inch powerstroke and between 80-100lbs in max draw weight (eg. the heaviest Hoyts go up to maybe 70 or 80lbs whereas the PSE Gorilla Sy was up to 100lbs).

Hi Rich, hope all is well. How's the archery thing going? I just read your post and I think if switching from right to left doesn't work the next best bet would be to just shoot instinctively. You can shoot a compound instinctively as well. Just get rid of all the peep and sight stuff, this way you can leave both of your eyes or the good eye open. Your brain will adjust from there. My daughter, for some reason, just could not shoot well with peeps and sights on her compound so I just removed them and she she started shooting well like she does with her traditional. The only down side is it takes years to be really good shooting instinctively

It must be very satisfying to be able to shoot that way, but I can't do that - when I try to my aim gets a lot worse. Maybe with time and a lot more practice it's something that might develop, but maybe it won't and the bow will remain something I operate rather than something that is an extension of my body.

As i told myself, it tepends on the archer. I was trained with a longbow, being able to shoot that accurately. Once given a compound bow, the arrow almost hit me (the archer) And a Zulu wont be able to use a compound to save his life. The power of traditional bows are immaculate. Yes, Zulu people use poison tipped arrows for hunting, but point is, they hit their shots accurately from very far distances.

I have run into where there is many different Archers and styles of shooting and some are dead set to their one style and think everyone else is wrong. Some of the die fast Traditional shooters don't believe Compound bows should be allowed and than the Compound Archers think Traditional and Crossbow Archers should not be allowed. I myself believe each has their place and own one of each. Instead of fighting over this we need to be together for the big picture where the anti-hunters are there to shut all of down and Archery needs to work hand and hand with Gun Owners and Fishermen ( that includes women ). I know this is a really old comment but Garmin actually makes some smart sights for compound bows that are really nuts. I shoot trad but my buddy has one and it almost feels like cheating.

For hunting it depends on where and how you are hunting. I live in western Washington State. Lots of dense woods. Granted my longest hunting shot would be 40 yards. That's the range I practice out to, which is why I can't beat my friends at long distance shooting on the walking ranges that go out to 80 yards. Anyway... I rarely get a 40 yard shot. When I'm deer hunting my longest shot might be 30 feet. When I'm hunting I just walk through woods looking for deer. Deer here see people all the time and don't find them a big threat. So when you find a deer it will just start walking away if you don't spook it. They're also very dumb. As they're walking away if you softly whistle at least one will stop, turn around and look for the noise. Giving you at least a good 3/4 quarter shot. You make good videos so don't stop. Bows are like cars. Some people like new, fast and flashy sports cars and some like comfortable sedans.

Have you ever tried recurve olympic style? I went from it to compound after 5 years practicing, in my opinion the olympic style is more complicated, distances are bigger. The compound for me is when you just need to have fun shooting.

i haven't but that sounds awesome!

@@OutdoorsAllie Try it if you have rhe opportunity. I am curious to see how a person who shoots only compound will deal with the clicker and the technique. Cool videos btw, subbed :)))

Hi, so I recently started getting into archery after going to my local range and I fell in love with it and I want to keep learning. I’ve been using the compound bow they provide, and my question is when should I consider buying my own bow (I am leaning more to buying a compound bow)

Excellent video! Compound it is! How hard is it to transition from a Traditional Bow to a Compound Bow?

Actually, one can pick up snowboarding with one on one instructions within two days and be able to go down most routes of the blue (easy) and red (middle) color by the end of the 3rd day. But while you can get down just fine, excellence takes time. Now, downhill skiing takes a bit longer (about 3 to 5 days, one on one instructions). It all depends on how flexible one is and what other sports have previously been practiced. Ice skating can make skiing easier as does skateboarding for snowboarding. Nordic skiing/Backcountry skiing is probably the easiest to pick up but pulling of telemark.. let's not go there. I started downhill skiing at 5, snowboarding at 14, and the last at 17. So I can reasonably say, that I'm capable of making an informed statement.

I want to get my 13-year old daughter into archery (she's plays around now with a cheap recurve bow built for kids), but I would like her to go the route of competition and get onto a college team eventually. Is a traditional bow or compound bow more appropriate if I want to go this route with her? Thanks in advance.
@OutdoorsAllie3 жыл бұрын
That's really tough to say. I think as long as she's practicing and having fun I wouldn't sway her one way or another yet. Maybe wait a couple more years before deciding. Thanks for watching Alan!
