The best video to learn about compound nouns in English. A compound noun is a noun that is made of two or more words. It usually conveys an idea that the words used separately do not convey.
A compound noun takes three different forms: open form, hyphenated form, adn closed form.
A compound noun is usually “noun + noun” or “adjective + noun”, but other combinations are also possible: noun + verb, preposition + noun, preposition + verb, adjective + noun, adjective + verb, noun + preposition, etc.
In compound nouns, the second word is usually (not always) the main word. The first word usually states the type or purpose of the second word.
There are no definite rules as to which form to use (open, hyphenated or closed). Different forms are used in different varieties of English. However, when you are not sure which form to use, consult a dictionary, or just write the compound noun as separate words.
