Hi there, You're doing a great job. I've been teaching English for 14 years (since 2005). I have tried several methods. However I am not satisfied with any of them. I just learned about "Comprehensible Input" a few weeks ago. It seems the most effective and natural way to acquire a language.
@ComprehensibleEnglish5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I appreciate it! That's great that you're learning about comprehensible input (CI). One thing to note is CI is not itself a method, rather it's what everyone needs to acquire languages and become fluent in them. While the critical importance of CI is widely accepted by experts on ELT and second language acquisition (e.g. "Comprehension of meaningful language is the foundation of language acquisition," write Lightbown & Spada in "How Languages are Learned"), I find there's a real lack of opportunities for learners to access much CI, especially when they're beginners and can't understand much of their new language at all. Various methods exist to make languages comprehensible to learners and provide them with lots of CI. Some of these are the Natural Approach, TPR, TPRS, and Story Listening. I make use of elements of these methods in my videos while following the ALG approach, which you can learn more about on my other channel (kzbin.info) and my blog by the same name.
@thevoiceworksstudio31853 жыл бұрын
@@ComprehensibleEnglish I totally agree! I have been reading about TPRS and CI for years as a person learning Mandarin, it is so hard to find CI for Mandarin. So I am now watching your videos to try to teach my own children with their own lessons. It seems the concept of CI is simple enough, but like you say, why so difficult to find the content?

I am following you from Saudi Arabia I want to learn English do you have any advice for me I designed a schedule for myself so that every week I focus on skill: a week to listen, a week to read, a week to write, and a week to speak.
@ComprehensibleEnglish Жыл бұрын
In general, I recommend focusing on listening. My advice for English beginners is to mainly listen and gain understanding of spoken English. Listen as much as you can each day to English content that you find interesting and understandable. As your listening comprehension improves, the other skills will get easier and you can spend some more time on them.

Haha! :) I just designed a video to reply to this, inspired by your comment! Have yet to make it! I live in Canada, and we might pay 50c for an apple. 1kg for $5 or $6. And they just come from BC :) So, I guess they are 50c per 100 g, and one apple is 70-100g, so that makes 50-60c per apple.

@@ComprehensibleEnglish Ok, thanks! Do you want to be added to our Facebook group for LINC instructors? I will share your video on there. In case you're not in Canada, LINC stands for Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada, and is a federally funded, settlement English language insruction program for adult, permanent residents in Canada. I was specifically looking for videos about jobs and skills, although I think I've designed a couple good ones myself, now, based on my student's story... still considering what I need in terms of permission from her, or how to make it anonymous enough that it is no longer about her.... to be able to share it publically. I teach CLB 1 and 2, so these very basic language videos you have made are perfect for my students! Next month, I'd like to teach about weather - it will be spring and people are walking outside, seeing people at 6 feet distant ;) so they are saying things like, Nice day, isn't it? And well, yesterday I laughed and said, Pretty chilly!! And the guy responded, "Better than snow!" to which I replied, "That is very true!" :) I thought a video of simple sayings like that would be useful, simple conversational things about the weather, that you can exchange with strangers, cashiers, etc. Anything to allow social connection in these distanced times. I pray God this distancing can end soon. Anyway, yes, thanks! Weather and jobs! I think we'll have another theme next month, too but I have to think about it. Maybe job skills, set in the workplace. Ooh I have a good idea for one! Also, one of my students cleans and needs to be able to tell customers to be careful and when she is done. I designed a video after yours and a French teacher lady's on that topic. But I haven't made the video yet. Take care, Rachel.

These apples cost 50 cents each. Ok. This apple cost 50 cents. Could anybody explain why not "this apple costS 50 cent? It’s present simple he/she/it? One apple costS 50 cent. Is it true? The lesson is brilliant.
@ComprehensibleEnglish8 ай бұрын
Here is what I wrote in another comment about that: "I said 'this apple cost about fifty cents' not 'costs' because 'cost' in that sentence is past tense, not present tense. The past form of the English verb 'cost' is irregular-it is also 'cost', not 'costed', except for certain uses of the word. I used the simple past because I already bought the apple."

So you told the story, with about 5 bits of information. Then you restated each bit and asked yes and no questions about it. Then you retold the whole story and extended it.
@ComprehensibleEnglish4 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's basically what I did here. The use of many questions is based on a technique known as circling from TPRS. In these videos I'm using elements from comprehensible input-based (CI-based) approaches like TPRS, ALG (Automatic Language Growth), and the natural approach. The are some differences from methods like TPRS such as the fact that it's not interactive like classroom or tutoring situations are (although unlike those situations viewers can control the video and choose another video at any time) and also I am using English only, in part because the videos are meant for beginning English learners no matter what language they speak.
