Just the example with the wave shaper alone was helpful. Thanks for all the great videos!

Loved this video! Watched it at least five times and took notes on the fifth. As always, you've provided great insight and instruction. I have a question. What would you recommend for compressing synths, leads, pianos, guitars, any other accompanying instruments etc. that are not kick, bass, or vocals (if needed of course)? Thank you for your insight and videos!

never thought about compressing reverb. may have to look into that

Pls, what’s the name of the compressor in this video

It's logic's stock compressor.

It's a vicious some say 10db attenuation on vocals, now i hear 6 to 8db attenuation, which one is better?

dont look at the numbers that much, use your ears. for vocals i only compress so there are no peaks and no inaudible parts, so approx 2-3db (up to 5db in loud parts) of reduction, and thats more than enough

Around 40 db overall compression works fine

Agree with derasecond--use your ears. For practice, try using extreme values for threshold, attack and release but adjust the make-up gain so that the output level is as close as you can get it to the input level. That should allow you to hear what the threshold, attack and release settings are doing without being deceived by a change in overall volume. Once you have a better intuition for how a compressor affects your sound, start with some classic/traditional settings and adjust/tweak to your liking. Or get creative--if it sounds good, it is good. There are only two caveats: * If you haven't practiced, you don't actually know. * If you don't actually know, you'll be tempted to chase people's opinions instead of putting in the hands-on effort required to gain understanding.

It really depends on the performance/genre, @derasecond and @steamer2k319 raise great points on this here.

22-08=14, 20-24=-4, 14÷(-4)=-3.5 which is a well compression rate of dB. Guess there's something about it 😂

highly doubt you’ll fully understand and master compression in 7 minutes

Certainly, we stated that "you'll be able to use compression effectively when mixing" after watching this at the start of our video. Like any skills, it takes practice and time to get full mastery/understanding. I don't believe we made any claims that watching this video will give you complete mastery!

There's a 10 hour course here in KZbin and that's not comprehensive enough for all the compression tricks out there, though it was extremely useful for my mixing. It taught me how to gain stage the before-after compression and to compare the results.
