8:26 you can directly access a file's properties by holding ALT and double-clicking the file, should save you a lot of time with your humonguous context menu

Steam Library Manager is a good program for steam, uplay and origin that uses these same compression options but also lets you move the game between drives and make copies of the game .

this worked a lot but for steam games if I were to uninstall it and say it was originally 15 GBs and I compressed it to like 8 GBs would I have to install the original 15 gbs or the compressed 8 gbs

hi man i did it with 7'z instead of win rar (kind of the same thing), Warning Sharing a game like that is illegal and both steam accounts can be permanently banned and deactivated. I tested it with fantasy blacksmith only to see what will happen, not to share it. Ok so i was able to compress the game from 5.16Gb to 2.45Gb, but i could not run the game, i first had to go back on steam resect local file and click on the 7z file. Sadly it just extracted the file (oddly fast). So i would say it is a good idea to do to the games you don't play to free up space and if for some reason you won't have access to the internet you can sill download that game so if you still want to know how just ask, i hope this helps😁

i have run this this tool on Tekken 8(it's 96GB) on 5 types of ssd's 3rd gen nvme ssd and some hard ssd's it compressed my games into 40 GB. i ran this game on all my ssd's for over 2 months of nonstop on 24H on 3 ssd's. My ssd did start giving me some problems and i estimate it would only tanks the ssd's lifetime by 18% but this is because they where cheap aftermarket ones but my good quality ssd's only lost 2% of the total life time so this means you won't damage it more than just normally running the game but remember it strains the cpu. I hope this helps😁

@@judas-444 Better feedback during operation, ability to pause and cancel at any point - once you've set CompactGUI off, you're *committed* and it tells you very little while it's working beyond a vague percentage. CompactGUI is (naively) multithreaded, so it's likely to compress faster, but this comes at the cost of slowing your (certainly my!) computer to a crawl, which is particularly obnoxious when you can't stop it cleanly. This also seems likely to behave very badly on hard disks which can't make use of heavy concurrency. Compactor's slower but more polite. The next version of Compactor will multithread, but it'll be configurable, have nicer defaults, and won't sacrifice feedback or control. It'll even use different settings depending on whether a file is on a SSD or HDD. Any month now... (I wrote Compactor and thus should be considered an unreliable biased source)

@@limitationsapply Nice program, but I have one question. When compressing, can you not compress files that are excluded or is the application just playing it safe to save time/prevent errors? It seems like if it wasn't excluded you could maybe get a lot more compression (I always have a large percentage of excluded files)

@@zdjhjsbfhushx Files are excluded to save time - they're either known-incompressible filetypes just from looking at their filename, or tested statistically and found incompressible. It'll be more configurable in the next version, so you can err on the side of wasting CPU in the hope it'll squeeze out a little more saving if you'd prefer.

Do you know approximately how much the different algorithms XPRESS4K, XPRESS8K, XPRESS16k put a load on the CPU? I want to begin compressing my drives but I'm not sure the best practices. For example, should I use XPRESS16k on very old games over 10 years old with low CPU requirements? And use XPRESS4K for newer games with more CPU usage. Should I avoid using this compression on ANY program that might be CPU bottlenecked? Thanks for your help

not necessarily, but if you are going to compress files on the SSD itself, its going to wear out some of the drive's TBW since its going to do reads/writes in the drive

@@tox4142 I appreciate the reply, I did decide to you use it yesterday though, even though windows defender also notified me that it could put my pc in danger because the download is from an unknown source. For now it's working as intended, it Indeed reduced the size of a game (ARK) almost by half and there are no performance issues and I have had no further notifications from windows defender. If it causes any problems I'll mention it here.
