What planet is this where a compression ferrule comes off by hand?

I'm not a plumber, but getting ready to do this in my bathroom soon, as the existing valve has no handle. Question: Why did you saw the pipe off? I thought that section looked decent. Second question: How did the ferrule come off so easily? I thought those things were "compressed" on pretty hard.

I notice you dont use teflon tape or pipe dope...the new blue monster tape is great, do you use it in some situations?
