I’ll try to answer that question: there’s a compressor that I use (that’s free) called Rough Rider and it has a visual feed on it so you can see what it’s doing to your signal as you adjust your settings. In theory you could put a second one behind it (or any other compressor) in your chain with a 1:1 ratio so you could just analyze the first signal from there solely. ..But more importantly, with any processing moves you make (EQ, comp., etc.) you’ll want to A-B them with your ears to really see if what you’re doing is helping “before-after-before-after.”

This is the best video on compression I have ever seen. I'm flabbergasted. I've never really understood so many of these aspects of compression and you've turned this obscure and difficult subject into something really fun to listen to, comprehensible and easy to understand. I've never known until now how you can change the vibe of your music so much with compression and how to use it more artistically, rhythmically and creatively. I just thought you could use it to squash sounds and make sounds sound louder, better & have more clarity in the mixing proces. But you just taught me how to really change the vibe and feel of the music. Also in terms of teaching style I think it's really cool how you take the time to really talk us through to what we're hearing and supposed to be paying attention to. This really makes the student able to understand what they're learning, listening to and (as you said beautifully) tune their ears to in the future be able to pay attention to the right changes in the music and really integrate what their learning. I am a music teacher, I teach mixing and production to my learners and I introduce every single one of them to this video at some time in their training. I have been a mixer/musician for many years and have watched thousands of videos over those years, but none of them come close to explaining how compression works like this one. I echo others here when I say this is how compression should be taught. I can get my learners so far but you always take them further, thank you so much for this video and all the great work you do on your channel.

This was an emotional rollercoaster and I cried during the part where the dry signal was blended in with the heavily squashed ride cymbal. I rate this a solid 9/10 with one point deducted for the lack of outro credits. Looking forward to the successor where we get to follow the signal through the earlier stages of the signal chain, as teased in the beginning of this story.
