Computer Chess is my favorite indie movie. I went from, "I enjoyed that" (my first viewing) to, "I love this movie" (my third or fourth viewing). I think, perhaps, one reason people have trouble connecting with it, it that it switches between docu-fiction and narrative. Roger Ebert praised the film for its achievement but also bashed it for not selling the "docu" part. I'm not sure it ever intended to... I see Computer Chess as similar (in its mix of styles) to the Zack Penn film, "The Grand" in that both mix fictional documentary footage with "conventional" filmmaking. It bothered viewers in both cases. It's hard to tell where one style ends and the other begins, I grant you. My question is: WHO CARES? Just enjoy the story and the characters. I become engrossed in the movie every time I watch it. I just let it wash over me and it never fails to engage.

It is certainly a novel movie. It was about a time in history where the first computers were being used to play chess but not like today where computers are almost unbeatable. It is about the personalities and not necessarily the computers or chess.

I thought I was too, when I read early reviews. But I was surprised by how much I got swept up in it. Maybe it'd be worth a try.
