Honestly, how this did not win the Best Picture Academy Award has always been a mystery to me. Brilliant script, casting, cinematography, acting, directing etc. blah. Frankly I've never seen a better film that has so completely fallen between the cracks. I understand the difficulty of marketing such a film but it is so vastly better than all the other films that nominated for Best Pic that year that is not even funny! Also, how on earth has Liv Schreiber never directed another film is beyond me.

What's interesting about the end, is that his mom looks at him knowing that HE is the one that hasn't accepted change yet. We finish the movie and he still thinks she didn't know how the transition happened. He created a version for her, but he believed in that version himself. She was told, earlier, by the nurse, what had really happened.

This is the best review I’ve seen for this film. I left the theater feeling oddly disjointed. Despite some fantastic performances ( hellooo Catherine O’Hara !! ) this film never really jelled for me. It’s a shame it was a flop because ironically Catherine O’Hara deserved a real life Oscar nod for her work here.

it was a much needed therapeutic "dramedy" in an age, where many east german felt as failure, lost family members, shattered dreams and facing the reality and felt second class citizen and hurt by west german companies exploitation while west german were full of sorrow how western gov and people would be able to build up a country like east germany with broken economy, broken cities and saw the differences in the culture that changed over decades and how to fit with each other.

Not to mention the MASTERFUL score! Yank Tiersen somehow expresses post-Soviet nostalgia, farfetched comedy, and intense emotion in his score for this movie.

The main thing about this film...it does have it's sad and funny parts, but it encompasses such an undertone of melancholy, which will leave you feeling both sad and exhilarated. All the characters are so real and underplayed which adds many things you don't expect, from each character and how they develop in the movie. First impressions are completely changed for each character, by movie's end. I came across this movie by accident many years ago. I was curious to see what Elijah Wood, had done after "Lord of the Rings"....and found this movie. From Frodo to Jonathan, but with both characters played so well by Wood. Since discovering the film back in 2005 or 2006, I've watched it once or twice every year since then. It continues to deliver. Not to many movies continue to have this gravitational pull to me, to watch it again. Dig, DmGrk

Watching this, I wondered what the crimes of East Germany were, compared to those of Australia in the same period (like, not recognising that indigenous people were human beings!). If you had a better command of English it would also make you sound less thick.

I like how talks about how the characters connect the heart and the humor with the film. Because, for me, is a movie made with the heart. When I see the movie for a moment I feel nostalgic about the culture and politics of socialism ( and I didn’t live that age) also I laughed and cried in some parts of the story. The music also participates in the perfect moment and do it more nostalgic. Goodbye Lenin is a perfect movie that creates curiosity about socialism.

I saw this movie and loved it. THEN I went to Russia and Ukraine on vacation. I came back to America and watched it again, and laughed even harder, cried even more. I am NOT Russian nor Ukrainian nor am I NOT Jewish. I am a historian and this movie puts a very human face on the Holocaust. I made my friends watch it, and everyone loved it.

Like so many others commenting here, this is one of my absolute favorite movies. I only happened on it because of a review round up by Roger Ebert of obscure movies you must see, and included among them was Everything is Illuminated, about a couple years before his death. I found this film to be the definition of poignancy, joy, high humor, redemption and resilience all rolled into one. My heart breaks a little each time I watch it and I'm glad because it helps me to remember that I'm still human.

While I don't believe it is intended (you preface these comments with "...the way the characters justify their actions..."), your comments regarding Bunting's motivations and his justifications in choosing his victims ("...cleaning up the societal scum that the legal system have leaned on too lightly", "...protecting society in their own warped way") might be misconstrued to suggest that there was an almost, albeit "warped", justification in Bunting's "vigilante" crimes, somewhat akin to the "heroic" character typified by the titular character of Dexter. As I say, I do not believe this to be your intent, however, I fear there may be some ambiguity in how this was presented. One of the many strengths of this film was its portrayal of extremist, sociopathic, homophobic culture and societal misconceptions relating to homosexuality and paedophilia, which I feel this ambiguity undermines somewhat. Anyway, a relatively minor criticism of a really well thought out and, in my humble opinion, very accurate review of a unique Australian film.

Hate to be a hater, but I can't even describe how much of a disservice this review does that film. You caught onto the silliest and most inconsequential bits and I feel like u didn't even see the second half. You're right it does have an incredible heart and you didn't spoil much, but all of the density, reconciliation and love is toward the end. Absolutely essential cinema for understanding contemporary East/West Europe.

The film is about love, to what length children go to comfort their mother. The chemistry between mother and son is also stunning. And it is about a culture clash. Also due to the humor (and family drama as reality was not as it seemed like and was as it was told) it is absolutely in my top 25 ever movies.
