1. Turn computer off and remove the battery if possible. Flip the computer over so that the liquid spilled onto the computer has a chance to come back out the same area it entered and not make its way further into the computer or sit and pool on important components within the computer.
2. Once the computer is open try to identify the areas inside the computer where the liquid has made its way into the computer so that you can target areas of components that may need further disassembly in order to properly clean and remove the liquid itself or remainder there off.
3. If you're not confident in your ability to diagnose or repair water damage in a computer, it's always best to consult a professional to avoid causing further damage to your computer.
4. Pick a workspace to disassemble the computer that will be a stable work area for a few days and not have to be moved mid repair to a different location. This will help you keep all your components organized and this will make it easier to put the computer back together once ready.
5. Fully remove or disconnect the battery in order to cease all power to the computer so that you don’t short any components during cleaning or disassembly.
6. If the data on the water damaged computer is important make finding the SSD and removing it your priority. That way you can inspect it first and possibly remove the data using an external enclosure connected to another computer. You might not be able to save the computer but if you can save the data that’s at least one win.
7. Once the computer is fully disassembled inspect each component carefully to insure it isn’t damaged or showing signs of corrosion. If possible, replace damaged components that are beyond salvaging as needed.
8. Allow enough time for drying: Make sure to allow enough time for the components to dry thoroughly before attempting to reassemble and turn on the computer.
9. Inspect for corrosion: Look for any signs of corrosion, such as white or green residue, on the components and clean them with a small amount of rubbing alcohol on a paper towel or a microfiber cloth. Make sure to squeeze out any access liquid from your cloth or rag so that it’s not to wet or damp when cleaning any internal hardware components.
10. Use a fan in a cool and dry environment to speed up drying and possibly remove moisture inside a computer over time. A good quality fan positioned correctly can actually pull moisture out of a computer if the air flow path is optimal.
