I think it comes down to how you prioritize. Boston sports first, always. Then you have to root against New York (or whoever is the most relevant rival). But then if you're living somewhere else, you just make do. Like my uncle moved to Detroit like 20 years ago, and while his affection for the football team is only just paying off now, we couldn't begrudge him the years of going to the games available to him. But my grandfather will cut him out of the will if he ever roots for any Detroit team over Boston.

A few things: 1. Conan, you can go to another team’s games and enjoy. But if you’re a true Boston fan and the Red Sox aren’t playing, you have to wear neutral colors. Then it’s understood that you’re there to enjoy the game and you’re not a weirdo for wearing team gear of a team that’s not playing. 2. Mookie Betts is the exception to the rule of, “he left so we hate him.” Red Sox fans LOVED him when he was in Boston and understand that ownership didn’t want to pay him to stay. So whenever he comes back to Boston, he gets a standing ovation. Dave Roberts is also a Red Sox legend for his role in winning the 2004 World Series. So actually the Dodgers became Red Sox West during the World Series.

In Europe, Africa, Central and South America or Asia, your football club (usually regional and regardless of how good or how much success it has) is determined by your family. You can choose relatively rarely. You can support other clubs outside of your country but you can't argue with your home club, my father was taught that, I was taught that and my sons are taught that. You can turn your back on the sport, but you should never change clubs. I've seen some really blatant examples of this, from stupid comments to beatings or exclusion from the family.
