@@manasvegi4170 they contacted me the next day after I sent the application (although I did it after the first ever fan segment aired so I'm sure now they have way more applications to look through) and then it took about three weeks (and a couple of other calls) to get to recording the episode and then a few more weeks before it aired.

They are a fan not an entertainer. If a fan gets invited up to play a song with Bob Dylan one can assume that Dylan is going to take the lead. Conan is using the fan to inspire improv tangents. The fan is setting up the joke and Conan is running with it.
