the lack of dialogue was one of the film's biggest strengths. The director wanted to make something more operatic which told its story through visuals and physical body language, which is honestly how I prefer movies. There's way too many movies that just have heaps of needless spoken exposition and it bores me to tears, this is a film that prefers to show rather than tell.

The actress playing Valeria got her finger cut off filming the scene in the chamber where she beheads the guy. They stopped filming, rushed to the hospital, they reattached it, went back to set and she finished filming. Valeria is definitely a Queen.

The first is great for it's time and was the gold standard for Sword & Sorcery films until LOTR came around. I think focusing on the cinematography and score rather than dialog works to create a fun fantasy atmosphere. The second isn't as good IMO but still worth a go. Still waiting for a King Conan movie!

There's a sequel but it's only enjoyable if you're into camp. Fair point about the silence but it lets the music breathe. This movie is like a fantasy opera with a legendary OST that is probably only surpassed by Star Wars. When you notice how fantastic the _entire_ soundtrack is in accompanying the various scenes, you'll bump up your score.

I am one of the rare people who likes the second movie, Conan the Destroyer. It's not nearly as good as this one, it's definitely not as serious, but it is an enjoyable film IMHO. Conan talks a lot more, there is an old companion who comes back in the second movie, there are some new friends made (Grace Jones is fantastic in this movie I think), but it is true, it's not as good as this one and does indeed have a completely different "feel" to it. The second movie is a "quest" tale (and a pretty good one I think) not a "revenge" story. So it is quite a bit different than this movie in that regard as well.

The soundtrack by Basil Pouldouris is one of the best fantasy tracks ever made, and you'll often find it in top movie tracks of all time. The long silences let the viewers be absorbed by the music. I'd give this 4 out of 5 stars. The sequel, Conan the Destroyer, drops down to a 2 or 2.5. There has been talk for some years about Conan the King, movie three, but I doubt it will happen at this point. Too bad,. I would loved to have seen that rather than more Terminator spin offs.

Conan is one of the great literature characters and settings. Robert E. Howard created this whole rich world which is one of the pillars of fantasy stories and is the opposite but equal to Tolkien. Tolkien was incredibly well educated and went war. He brought the change and destruction of WW1 to his stories. Howard grew up in the Texan Oil fields where men settled their disputes with fists and guns, and as the son of a doctor he got to see it first hand. He built a world were physical strength and violence were the measure of a man. Having said that most of his characters were always quick witted and smart if not educated and they always had strong personnel code of honour. Sadly Howard would take his own life when his mother his strongest supporter fell into a coma as a result of tuberculosis. After his death people would find his unfinished stories and notes and would carry on spawning more Books, Short stories, Comics, TV shows, Cartoons, Games and Movies (a direct Sequel to this "Conan the Destroyer' and a remake staring Jason Momoa). He would also inspire other characters from He-Man to Terry Patchett's Cohen the Barbarian (what happens to legendry Barbarian hero when he grows old)

Movie should have been named after Valeria? Nope. Valeria is a creation of writer/director John Milius, while in the original Conan short stories from 1930's, Belit, Pirate Princess of Black Coast, was Conan's lover, whom he lost. While Valeria has some characteristics of Belit, the character was written to give Conan more motivation and Conan is the character the movie was based on, Conan existing prior to this in Robert E. Howard's Pulp stories and Marvel comics based on them.

If you watch it as more of an operatic story, with the Music telling the story, you may enjoy it more. It had little dialogue because it reflected a barbarian's approach to the world. Action, not words. Physical strength over intellect. It's a brutal and simple mindset. It's why they fell for each other so quickly too. Conan's life is almost like an animal; food, shelter, comfort of friends and lovers, and Revenge. That's all. No need to speak about things much. If you watch it with that perspective, rather than a modern mindset, you may enjoy it more.

While you make a good point, it's not a 'dumb' movie per-se. Even the action sequences Conan & Crew show some cleverness even if they also have plenty of straight ahead hacking. Also, Conan is supposed to be a man of few words. He prefers action and contemplation, even in all the original stories I've read (admittedly not every one, but I've read about 7, plus the only actual Novel "Hour of the Dragon"). I don't need all my movie protagonists to be men of words. A few pithy words can show erudition and education as much as long dialogues. That and /or witty one liners (Arnold's movies have lots of those) can also be enjoyable. Now I do like some men who speak alot as characters: Littlefinger and Varys in Game of Thrones (both novel and TV) are some of my favorite characters of all time. It's just this an action adventure and fantasy movie about , basically, revenge. While there are a few dialogues about philosophy of life and things of that nature, this isn't a movie that needs lots of dialogue.

Conan is told to discover the Riddle of Steel and is told that steel is the only thing he can trust. Thulsa Doom reveals to him that steel is not strong, it is the flesh that wields the steel that is strong. Conan dies on the Tree of Woe, is returned to life and realizes flesh is not strong, it is the spirit and will that commands the flesh that is strong. So he tells his God to piss off and stay out of his way. I think Crom was pleased and proud that Conan had figured this out. So he sends Valeria back, in her deserved position of Valkyrie, to save his ass. Conan shatters his father's sword to bring home the point. He uses that sword to kill Thulsa Doom. This movie is rich in symbolism and pretty deep if you look into it.

The good dialog is owed to young Oliver Stone, who made an awesome script, and had a treatment for 10 more movies or so. Nothing of that came to fruition, cause the next Conan movie didnt involve him, or John Millius as director either, sadly. The premise of the sequel was more fantastical (as the original novels were) and not as grounded or "believable" as the first film, which was aparently what the hardcore Conan fans wanted. But the sequel is clearly a lesser movie, with all the aspects of the B movies from the 80s. The "Old Conan" film project with Arnie as protagonist was attempted for the next 30 years, with Arnie at times very interested, but the owner of the legal rights, when he finally had the oportunity(2011), wanted to do an epic reeboot with Jason Momoa rather than a nostalgic sad "last" movie of the character with Schwarzenegger. The movie ended being a flop, so that was it. Shame.

That's true. Short stories from 30s pulp mags. Robert E. Howard was a fantastic writer. It's like you're crawling the dungeon with Conan. His descriptions are great. Here is how Valeria is introduced in Red Nails. Against the background of somber, primitive forest she posed with an unconscious picturesqueness, bizarre and out of place. She should have been posed against a background of sea-clouds, painted masts and wheeling gulls. There was the color of the sea in her wide eyes. And that was as it should have been, because this was Valeria of the Red Brotherhood, whose deeds are celebrated in song and ballad wherever seafarers gather.

At 5:25, the scene where he's in the tomb. I always wonder about that scene. Was it or was it NOT the tomb of Kull the Conqueror (AKA King Kull)? At the time this flick was made Marvel had the licenses to both Conan & Kull. It was implied very heavily in the comics at the time that Conan was a descendent of Kull. I should also note that the main villain of this film, Tulsa Doom, is actually a Kull villain (Thoth Amon is Conans, after he becomes king), which would be poetic, Conan doing what his ancestor was unable to do.

There were two sequels to this, one 'official,' and one 'unofficial,' and i'd call each as entertaining as this. The official one was called "Conan the Destroyer' and went heavy on the magical aspect, and a bit heavier with comedy. Hey, Laura! "Know, O Prince, that between the years when the oceans drank Atlantis and the gleaming cities, and the years of the rise of the Sons of Aryas, there was an Age undreamed of, when shining kingdoms lay spread across the world like blue mantles beneath the stars. Nemedia, Ophir, Brythunia, Hyperborea. Zamora with its dark-haired women and towers of spider-haunted mystery, Zingara with its chivalry, Koth that bordered on the pastoral lands of Shem, Stygia with its shadow-guarded tombs, Hyrkania whose riders wore steel and silk and gold. But the proudest kingdom of the world was Aquilonia, reigning supreme in the dreaming West. Hither came Conan the Cimmerian, black-haired, sullen-eyed, sword in hand, a thief, a reaver, a slayer, with gigantic melancholies and gigantic mirth to tread the jeweled thrones of the Earth under his sandaled feet." Robert E. Howard created an iconic noble savage character whose exploits were chronicled in 28 completed and incomplete tales, poems and essays. Conan exists in a prehistoric period of our world called the Hyborian Age. He descends from the mountains of Cimmeria as a youth seeking adventure and, over his long career, he works as a thief, a soldier, a mercenary, a bandit, a pirate, a scout and ultimately becomes a wise and just king of the greatest nation of his day, Aquilonia. Unlike monosyllabic Arnie, Conan is quite thoughtful and eloquent in much the same way Edgar Rice Burroughs' Tarzan is. One of my favorite Conan quotes has him answering what the nature of reality is: "Let teachers and philosophers brood over questions of reality and illusion. I know this: if life is illusion, then I am no less an illusion, and being thus, the illusion is real to me." Howard was a master wordsmith from Texas who tried his hand at many different pulp genres of the '30s and mastered them all. He was never considered a serious writer by the establishment yet his work is beloved to this day. He maintained a long-standing correspondence relationship with horror maestro H.P. Lovecraft. He was emotionally disturbed and committed suicide after the death of his mother in 1936 at the age of thirty. The Milius-Stone movie is a successful pastiche of King Kull and Conan stories blended together. The rousing score by Basil Poledouris provides an operatic sweep and captures the blood and thunder ethos of the characters. The early biographical montage of slave to gladiator to wanderer is the backstory of Howard's Atlantean character, King Kull, whose nemesis is Thulsa Doom and the cult of snake men who are trying to revive an earlier period of prehistory when snake-people ruled supreme in a global empire called Acheron. Conan's Hyborian Age occurs after a Great Cataclysm that reshapes the continents. It is implied that Kull is a blood ancestor millennia-removed. Sequences in the film are loosely based on Conan stories. The giant snake is from "The God in the Bowl", teaming up with fellow thieves to infiltrate an impenetrable temple is from "The Tower of the Elephant", rescuing a princess from a cult is from "The People of the Black Circle", surviving the crucifixion by ripping out a vulture's throat with his teeth is from "A Witch Shall Be Born". Sandahl Bergman's Valeria is a blend of two of Conan's great loves: Valeria and Belit. Valeria is a vagabond adventurer with a lust for excitement like him from the tale "Red Nails". Belit is a pirate queen and Conan's first true love. Belit vows to return from death to defend her lover and she does in a moment of great need in "Queen of the Black Coast" just as Valeria does in the movie. Absolutely see "Conan the Destroyer"! It's fantastic pulpy fun with a few authentic Howard references although its mostly pastiche. Filmmakers have never adapted Conan faithfully and it's a terrible shame because Howard was an extraordinary writer. Arnold is the perfect age to return and do Howard's trilogy of King Conan tales: "The Phoenix on the Sword", "The Scarlet Citadel" and "The Hour of the Dragon". Schwarzenegger has eagerly expressed interest in doing it and doing it right! All they'd have to do is follow the books. The last line of the Conan saga is surprisingly romantic and has the bachelor king select a wife! Earlier in "Hour of the Dragon", the slave girl Zenobia, who was quite taken with the visiting king, freed him from the dungeons of Nemedia. He escapes to go on a quest and returns to defeat his enemies. He could by rights annex the Nemedian king's entire country expanding Aquilonian territory but he only asks for one thing: Zenobia. Baffled, the Nemedian monarch asks why this one slave girl? Conan answers, "In Nemedia, she was a slave but she will be Queen of Aquilonia." If you haven't seen Arnold in "Collateral Damage", check it out. It's one of his better films. If you want to see amazing sword-and-planet pulp fiction based on Edgar Rice Burroughs Martian stories, see "John Carter" (2012). If you want to see animated blood-and-thunder, see Ralph Bakshi's "Fire and Ice" based on the paintings of Frank Frazetta!

7:49 HAHAHA! By avery account that I've heard, you'd change your mind if you ever met a dromedary. More stubborn than a mule, and more evil-tempered than a hippo, is their reputation. And their favorite form of insult is to spit a gooey, gluey mass in your face.

You know I'm 76 years old and I remember when this movie came out and at the time it was a total hit but as far as to day's ratings go your prettty close but even though you gave it a 3. 5 star rating I still think your a tad bit low mostly because your judging it with movies that are NOW movies which you shouldn't do. It should be rated according to the time it came out. At that time like most people, I would have rated it a total 5 BUT now I would rate it as a 4 compared to NOW movies. It's a fantasy movie and is still a good watch even though it's old. Oh and one more thing when watching a movie that is NOT a comidy maybe a little less laughing would be apropate.

There reason there isn't a lot of dialogue is because the target demographic are males. All we need to know is they slaughtered his village and parents when he was a child and now he wont rest until he gets revenge with Crom's blessing.

I will never again see this film, without thinking of the hilariousTerry Pratchett send-up of this character, in "The Light Fantastic" who was basically Conan, but after 60 or so years of the barbarian life...a withered, toothless old man, who, when asked about what is best in life, could only gum some soup into his mouth, and answer "Soft lavatory paper.'

"Queen Valeria..." Tried it, as Red Sonja. And now they're remaking it. It flopped back then, and it'll flop now. There is one warrior princess, and her name is Xena.

3.5 stars is fair, as there weren't many 'good' fantasy films at this time. Arnold's English wasn't the best here yet. Better in the sequel. I like the 2nd movie better. It's an inferior production, but more satisfying... and the camel gets his revenge. More stars in the movie (Wilt Chamberlain). Beter action. Love the cousin's sister's brother argument. It's still one of my favorite movies of all time. (4.5 stars). Red Sonja is sort of a third movie, but not really. It's pretty good for what it is. Sandra Bernhard returns as the antagonist this time. (3 stars).

*Sandahl Bergman. Sadly Red Sonja was the only really decent role she got after this. It's a real shame she wasn't able to capitalize on it more, because she's really good in Conan.

Lmao, I love the reaction of women to Conan's response to the the Mongolian general's question. What is best in life. Crush you enemy, see them driven before you and hear the lamentation of their women. Women just shrug and eye roll. Men thump their chests, snarl their teeth and let out a victorious yell to have Crum hear our calls. Oh before I get labeled as a toxic masculine man, I got choked up when Valeria came back as a Valkyrie, better than a queen, she is a Goddess

10:12 well the way you're speaking is a present day idea. And especially in the Conan world, stuff like this is rampant and worse. 10:19 accurate to present day women. 😂 But don't try too hard to understand this, this takes place during the hyborian age, just after Atlantis supposedly sank. So this is at least 10,000 years ago, so the way things are done and the crazy s*** that that happened would be hard for us to understand. Of course this is all fake, but still it's a fantasy movie. Don't try to logic it. 😂

@@queenglamazona8789 And Subotai and the Shaman? Do you think they didn't do anything? They aslo saved Conan life. I think Conan could have defended him without her. But it helped a lot. Just needed something supernatural. That doesn't make her a real hero. And Crom sent her back (in the second movie said one time), and he has no Valkyries. Of course she is a woman and the women love her because she can fight with a sword.

I really enjoyed seeing your reaction to Conan! I think your analysis of the movie's quality is on point. To me, this is the kind of movie that's very enjoyable and a lot of fun, even though it has plenty of flaws. It's much more fun to watch with friends, in my opinion! Plenty of campy stuff to make fun of, but also plenty of really cool moments.
