Not a god necessarily, but Conan is a descendant of the Atlanteans as are all Cimmerians. To what extent this makes him far more than human is debatable, but he does have the blood of beings far greater than most mortals in his world.

What's amazing is how this riddle comes full circle by the end of the film. The steel sword broke. Conan's body broke after Thulsa Doom had him crucified and left for dead. He lost his beloved. At the end, he could rely only on his will to live. As long as we're alive, we are our own last resort. No one else can take our own role in life, even if we can appreciate the help of others at times.

I find it interesting that what Conan's father told him he could trust was the same sword that shattered and helped defeat Thulsa Doom's Captain, Rexor. The untold story is that Thulsa Doom foretold the sword would be used to kill him, and he raided the village to circumvent the prophecy, but in the end, even the broken shards of the blade finally ended his reign. A true classic.

Steel and the blade here is an image, almost a direct extension of the warrior and oneself. Conan is a barbarian in name only you see. Because essentially what this scene boils down to is that the quintessential hero trust HIMSELF. To trust yourself and standing up and defending your vision of reality, that is the main caracteristic of a hero. What a scene. Trust yourselves guy.

Jon Booth Well that and that most humans, most animals, and most machines can turn on you at the drop of a hat, except for Steel. This is somewhat true, most people can't be trusted, just take a look at the events of the last 5 to 8 years. Most people will fold and turn against you at the drop of a hat. Most animals can be manipulated, and most machines can be compromised, even iron or steel can turn on you, the one thing you can trust is hyperbolic doubt, just like Descartes said.

I do love how the Riddle of Steel is not a recipe written on paper, it's sheer knowledge, and the giants had to fool a god to get this precious knowledge. This is still one of my favorite movies of all time. Sure, the remake had an actor that looked more like the Cimmerian. But, it had none of the quotes, the music, and general power this movie held. I would have killed to see Ron Perlman and the young actor who played Conan remake this scene. But, I was left wanting.
@Strideo1
@Strideo1 5 жыл бұрын
This movie employs one of the greatest film making techniques out there: the actors actually don't talk constantly so the movie has time to just show us what's happening visually with great music to set the mood and atmosphere. Like the scene where they sneak into Doom's temple during the orgy and the tension just builds as they set up the whole situation then it explodes into action once they're discovered and they kidnap/rescue the princess. The movie has lots of great visual story telling and it doesn't treat the audience like a child with some character constantly babbling on about what's happening now to explain it to the audience. It seems like studio executives don't respect the audience anymore because the way most modern movies are edited just drives me crazy. Everything is cut too fast and someone is usually talking. Rarely do we ever get a long moment to reflect on or appreciate the mood or setting. Gone are the moments where we just see our hero watching the setting sun while the music stirs out emotions and for a moment we know what they feel instead of being told what they feel.

Conan's father and Thulsa Doom are not right, but not wrong. Conan's father put too much trust in his steel, and in the end, it was cut in two. Thulsa Doom put too much trust into the flesh of others, and in the end, he was unable to control Conan, dying because of it. He also was not physically strong, much like Conan's father's sword, which was weak (not implying the two decades of implied lack of upkeep to said sword). Not to mention the riddle of steel is quite literally answered in the first frame of the movie. "That which doesn't kill you, makes you stronger." Temper your body as you would steel. EDIT: Perhaps his phrase of 'this you can trust' regards not the blade itself, but his skills. Skills he took many years honing. Trial and error. That which didn't kill him.

Who a better hero for Real Men then Conan the Barbarian. Conan encompasses ideals of “Real Men” Or “ Neo-Machoist “ .

Why can't they make movies like this anymore? We could use a man like John Milius again.

I have heard an interesting interpretation, that the writing on this sword "Suffer no guilt, ye who wield this in the name of Crom" was proven in the film. The sword breaks when Rexor fights Conan, who is a true follower of Crom. The sword, according to this interpretation, then "wakes up" Conan from the charismatic "hypnosis" of Thulsa Doom at the end and is used to decapitate the villain.
