Music. The BEST ACTOR in "Conan, the Barbarian". One of the greatest Original Soundtracks in Film History
@flybeep1661

Yep, cult classic film score. Much adored and beloved by film score listeners and others. The score even got a full orchestra re-recording in the early 2010s under the title "conan new world premiere recording" recorded by the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. It's very true to the original and often the recording is even better than the original.

I completely agree. The score tells the entire story of the film. I've literally witnessed people who never even saw the film become emotionally moved by the score. Basil Poledouris was without a doubt one of the greatest composers in the history of cinema.

Funny thing is, the soundtrack wasn't even nominated for an oscar. I've read elsewhere that during pre-production they were considering a pop-music style soundtrack instead but thankfully Millius insisted on going classical. And Basil delivered what i think is *the* best film soundtrack of all time. And don't get me wrong there are countless greats out there but this one is astonishing in that there's no filler material in the disc - you can pick any single track out of the album and it stands perfectly fine on its own. Whereas for example in the LOTR which i really like, there are astonishing pieces but there are also awful low-points with a lot of ambient & filler material that you forget it exists the moment the disc ends. Another strong point is that Basil's masterpiece is not created around some single central theme melody like so many other soundtracks do. There are two exceptions (Riders of Doom/Battle of the Mounds & Funeral Pyre/Wifeing) that share the same melody (and pretty successfully at that because each track is awesome on its own merit) but the rest have their own identity.

@@mixas6678 You hit the nail on the head, other sound track scores have stand out tracks but basils work here is literally consistently brilliant track after track. People tend to forget he also created another masterpiece in robocop which had multiple really good songs which just blended with the film super good. The conan soundtrack for me is the best and i don't think that quality will be done again.

IMHO one of the best scenes in movie fantasy ever. The atmosphere is just entrancing. I love the simplicity and the acuteness of the narrative, I adore the music, I applaud Arnold's stern expression and Mako's magical voice. What more do you want? Remakes can't capture this.

The journey through the fantasy realms is actually the best part of most fantasy and sci-fi based movies. Human nature enjoys exploring more than the epic cgi fights. ( But ofcourse also the quality of acting and the powerfull music composed ) I believe thats one of the reasons why old movies/tv shows are still top of the list today and why the new movies, tv shows mostly miss the point and are forgotten so fast.

E.D. Kaplan thank you! You might enjoy Patrick O’Brien’s very neglected early work “The Road to Samarcand” (that’s how it was spelled in France in 1954 ... it IS in English!). O’Brien would later go on to write his Aubrey/ Maturin series which includes “Master & Commander” (recently filmed) which so far interests me not in the least. I was led to this fanciful story of adventure & exploration by knowing he wrote the English translation of Joseph Kessell’s “The Horsemen” (also filmed, but very poorly in most aspects).

2:04 The Mounds. Remember that the tales of Conan are set in the Hyborian age... which takes place after the fall the great civilization of the Atlantean age. Imagery like this and just a few lines of dialogue serve as a haunting reminder of how fragile and fleeting all the higher accomplishments of man can be, and how as a species, we move forward with a certain amnesia to the truth of our history, as time washes away all but mere shadows of what once was. Fragments of structures and relics from a more technologically advanced time take on magical qualities in the more primitive minds of the post-civilizational people. Akiro the wizard presumably took up residence at the mounds for this reason, and consider that the reason for Conan's sword being so extraordinary, is that it was forged by a more technologically advanced culture using superior methods and materials.

A very moving scene that many will sadly never understand. This movie should be shown in schools for many reasons. The conan in this movie is a beacon for how every man should wish he could be. And I don't mean strong physically. His strong will, sense of honor, humbleness, and silence. Earth would be a much better place if we had more Conans and less Thulsa Dooms.

Thulsa Doom speech and dialogue to Conan wasn't exactly incorrect, either. When Doom was told by Conan that he murdered his parents, and his people, he didn't exactly apologized, but he expressed regret that he once, like Conan believed in same meandering concept of understanding steel as a weapon and as philosophy and he never found it. And he's older, much older than Conan, maybe hundreds of years older, so he's speaking from a older, knowledgeable perspective than Conan doesn't have and can't have since he isn't lived as long as he has and has to kill, murder, rape, innocent people, tribes, cities, disrupt, distort minds into some messianic cult movement. If Conan ever became a king in the same manner Doom became a powerful, cult leader he might better appreciated what Dooms message was and or even Max von Sydow's character told him earlier, there comes a time when all a man, or a king cares about is the safety and well-being of his daughter or his family.

It's a superhero story. No superhero can exist without his opposite. Without Thulsa Doom there would have been no Conan as we know him. He would not have grown up an orphaned slave, or spend his childhood pushing the wheel of pain. But I agree this story is awesome. Not so sure about showing this in schools though, the fragile types of these latest generations would blow a gasket. Then again I grew up on this stuff as a kid and I'm OK. Well, alright... bad example.

The appeal for me isn't so much about being a warrior in and of itself but the indomitable spirit that Conan represents. It is the riddle of steel that reflects upon this, where flesh and steel can ultimately fail and betray those who place too much faith in them, Conans journey of constant struggles and self discovery shows us the true answer. That it is mans will that gives him his greatest strength in life, allowing him to prevail over seemingly impossible odds, even the supernatural. This can be further reflected by how his fathers sword breaks in battle, how Thulsa Doom failed to overpower Conan with his hypnotic gaze, and further juxtaposed by his mother failing this same test earlier on, resulting in both of them being decapitated in the end as a result. It is my favorite movie of all time and I never get tired of seeing people's confused looks when I reveal this.

Sword for flowers, yet they do not know the Riddle of Steel. Steel is strong, Doom thought flesh is stronger. A warrior knows how to wield both. The end of the movie with Conan at the top of the temple demonstrated this to Doom's followers. The sword of Crom in one hand, and the head of Doom in the other. Lesson learned. 😋😋😋

I was really big into the Conan books when this movie came out -- I first read it in the Ace paperbacks that featured the original Howard stories, and the "posthumous collaborations" and pastiches of L. Sprague deCamp and Lin Carter (unlike many, if not most Howard fans these days, I am not a deCamp/Carter hater; I recognize the vital contribution they made in keeping the stories in print and out there in front of an audience of fans, to create the appetite for Howard's character that still exists today, and without which there probably never would have been a movie). This film version may not have been quite true to Howard's character in many respects, but I think it perfectly captured the epic, adventurous feel of Howard's stories, whatever liberties it may have taken with the character, and it perfectly achieved the same effect: to transport you, for a little while, away from the cares and worries of everyday life, to a world of high adventure where all prospects were exciting, all women were beautiful, and all life was rich with possibility for anyone bold enough to dare great things.

I like how the scenes give ample attention to wide landscape shots. The search scenes and also the march of Conan as a child in the beginning of the movie are the only scenes that do that.

This film stood the test of time, a proper classic, no drugs no guns no space ships , no bullshit, no political correctness, no left wing agenda, just an old story fetched to screen, no jj no kk, no Disney, sort of thing that inspired George r r Martin , and George Lucas,

Very dense philosophical questions in this movie. Beginning with Nietzsche quotation at the very beginning of the movie. Passing through the riddle of steel. Words can be strong than iron. A critic view on religion. I'm not a religious person, but... I see Thulsa Doom as an old testament God testing Conan. And I see Conan as an new testament Jesus. Isn't by mere coincidence that Doom ordered Conan to be crucified. And the philosophy goes on and on...
