As a chicano, I grew up loving Mexico and rooting for the US. As I grew up, I realized how childish and undignified a lot of Mexican fans are. When I was litle, I mistakenly thought they were yelling "Futbol" at goal kicks, which seemed fun. It wasn't until I saw American fans being escorted from their caged area in the Azteca, bloodied from bottles thrown their way, that I fully converted. It still hurts to realize that there was no fall from grace for Mexico but rather learning that they never had any to begin with.

I root for the USMNT, but I also root for Mexico (when not playing the US) because I love Mexico and its people, but yesterday's behavior was just not acceptable. The referee is Ivan Barton of El Salvador. I went to the United States-Mexico game in 2021, and the was the referee in that one as well. For the most part, it was officiated well, except for two moments - when Rodriguez almost gouged out Aaronson's eyes as the U.S. was getting ready to take a free kick, and Rodriguez only got a yellow, and Miles Robinson getting a second yellow (when they were already winning 2-0, to be fair) for what looked like Herrera slipping. And it was November in Cincinnati, so there was a lot of light sleet and cold that night.

That's where the ref completely lost control of the game. He was being too forgiving and that's when the Mexican players felt they could get away with anything thus everything that came after. Then after that the ref got all card happy giving out cards when it was all too late, already lost control of the game.

US-Mex in competitive play is the hardest game to referee in CONCACAF, and because they need someone from a different country to do it, there's a shallow pool to draw from, of people without similar experience.
