Is the .40 S&W a useful caliber for concealed carry? What should you be looking for in a concealed carry firearm?
Firearms shown in this video:
Glock 27
Smith & Wesson M&P Shield
Walther PPS
Thanks for watching. New videos post every Thursday!

I carried a .40 during my full 20 year law enforcement career and it brought me through two officer-involved shootings. I hear all of the talk about 9mm, blah, blah, blah however I am still alive due to a .40 so I have no intentions of changing my caliber of choice now that I have retired.

I carry 1911 occasionally and used to carry the glock 23 for work. The .45 is easier to shoot, but the .40 is more compact, more rounds and more energy.

Great video...excellent thought... I carried 40 caliber in a Smith and Wesson Model 411 for about half my career as an LEO. Prior to the 411, I carried 357 magnum, 41 magnum, and .45 ACP. I never owned a Glock until nine years after I retired, and it is the Glock 22. I carry it regularly in SE Texas where we have two seasons, summer and August. I shoot this gun at least twice a month...oh, by the way, I'm 70 years old and can still handle this handgun ! The biggest complaint I hear about the 40 cal is recoil snappiness. As is noted in the video, 40 cal was/is meant for a full-size service weapon. If the recoil is too much for a person in a full sized service weapon, hit the gym.

I really love the little Glock 27, I have 2 of them, a gen3 and a gen4! I never use any finger extensions or longer mags in them, it's not thier purpose and will just print longer if you use those! I like having my pinky under the mag and always shoot them that way. I also really like the thicker frame of the 27 versus some of the single stack guns, I feel that it spreads recoil out over more of the web of my hand. I apply the same theories to both of my Glock 29 gen4s, which I actually find easier to shoot than the 27s, but the 27s really are smaller enough over the 29s that they carry well when the 29s are just a bit too big! I use the same practice and duty ammo as the local Sherriff department and the 27s love it! I only shoot 180 grain bullets on a normal basis, some 135s rarely, and they love those, too! I consider the 27s to be the "chiefs special" of the Glocks, and I've owned nearly every thing else! You just can't beat the .40 in that small Glock, it just works so well in so many different situations!

This man explains things clearly . The .40 to me , (70 yr old , arthritic , muscle and nerve problems ) is not too snappy in a duty size handgun . It is the "haymaker" that I can no longer swing . More ft-lbs than 9mm. That's it's role . Beautiful in a carbine .

Yeah people are definitely super sensitive, my mom shot g27 .40 and said it was way more smoother recoil, accurate and easier shooting than her .38 snub nose , honestly i cant tell much of a difference between the 9 and 40 recoil wise weather full compact or subcompact, the only time ive ever shot something and it actually hurt my hand was the glock 36 in .45, every other 45 especially 1911s no issues month as butter ,but the 40 has similar capacity as the 9 and if you can shoot both just as accurately it cant hurt goin with 40 , i own several 9s 40 and 45 and they all do the job and are effiecient just practice and use what your comfortable with, a bullet is a bullet , ive carried 380 and 38 when younger to argue about wich will kill more is just silly , compared to rifles and shotguns there not huge difference amongst handguns

At first I put a 22lb spring like a lot of people recommend but it was too heavy it was hitting low & having trouble sliding forward that's how I knew it was too stiff that's like for 357Sig or 10mm. I agree that 38spl snubs recoil a lot so do 380acp pocket pistols.

As you stated, the popularity of the 9mm can work against it in troubling times…exactly when you need both your firearm and the freedom seeds it eats. I had no difficulty whatsoever finding ammo for my Springfield EMP 40 S&W, both ball and self-defense ammo were readily available. Furthermore, I was able to pickup 2,000 new, primed 40 S&W cases, so my ability to load throughout the pandemic…and still today…was unhindered.

Bought my .40 about 7 yrs ago. I had shot plenty as a kid and very occasionally as an adult so I wasn’t as knowledgeable than as I am now. Main reason I got it is because of the price point. What I chose was on sale and got recommendations from a fellow coworker. At one point, I always said if I had to do it all over again I would go with 9 mm. But since I have joined a shooting range and have practiced and trained with it, that is no longer the case. It’s amazing how quickly I became more proficient and accurate with practice. It certainly does have a snap, but the more I shoot, the less it matters because I am able to control it much better now and will continue to do so. My only issue is finding a comfortable holster or way to carry it. I have a Ruger SR40c and it’s a little on the larger side of what is considered a compact. Especially the grip, I would consider it somewhat fat. I am a pretty lean guy of smaller frame and very little body fat and I have yet to find a comfortable IWB holster.I mostly use a belly band which is fine for the fall and winter months when I have more and bigger clothes on, but in the summer it’s a challenge to conceal my weapon well as it tends to print more in my summer clothes. I’m just going to be patient and try to get a good comfortable IWB so I can continue to use this as my EDC. Appreciate the video. Very well put and you certainly hit on some key points I had never considered before.

So in all seriousness, if you where to shoot some kind of "meat" target (not gel where you can see 1/2" difference in penetration) with either 135g&150g or 155g&165, they would be indistinguishable wounds. Now I'm assuming and may be wrong . I feel I Iike what's more important is that you are always firing a round that's not going to change and your POI, by the FPS/ velocity being too different. If you have 2 or 3 shots that are where your trying to put them any difference in ammo isn't going to matter. And of course I don't mean a fmj vs a hp.

I was an old school shooter for many years but I finally saw the light and purchased a Gen 3 Glock 22 40sw on Sept 2004 and started to use it as my primary CCW and also used it for IDPA matches and I put over 50K from 2004-2013 when I purchased a SIG P226 40sw and I retired the Gen 3 G22 and got a new Gen 4 G22. I have been a fan of 40sw since 2004 and today I own several from Glock, SIG, Smith and Wesson and Walther. One thing that I always tell friends when they ask me what gun to get is get a 40sw because you can have 3 different calibers if you choose the right pistol. Pistols like Glock you can have a 40sw, 357sig and 9mm barrels all in a G22, G23, G24 or G35 pistol that is allot of flexibility and SIG pistols give a 40sw/357sig and most have Caliber conversion kit where you can get a new slide for going down to 9mm. Because of all the active shooting that have happened I have upped the type of ammo that I carry to Underwood 135gr JHP 40sw which works GREAT out of a Glock, SIG and Walther pistols! This ammo is High Performance with a Muzzle Velocity of 1400 FPS and Muzzle Energy of 588 Ft/Lbs that is serious power coming of a 4.6 inch barrel and even if the target has body armor the amount of Energy that is being DELIVERED will CAUSE Internal Injuries that is something that NO 9mm ammo can say!

I have a Kahr PM40, even though it’s only 6 +1 rds (7rd mag on a reload) it’s incredibly slim and small footprint and is easily front pocket carried! It’s double action trigger is a long pull but it’s so smooth and is very safe to carry without a saftey. I don’t carry it as much nowadays but you could do way worse than 7rds of 40S&W! 👍🏻

Very well said! 40s&w is very powerful as well as reliable. I carry a Glock 27 with a Glock 23 mag which gives me 10+1. I also have the Pearce Grip sleeve and extension on the 23 mag. And I have a full tungsten guide rod assembly installed which actually does work with recoil giving a bit more weight low up front. Stay safe God Bless ✌️🇺🇲

I bought a Walther p99 in 2008 when the first ammo shortage happened (thanks Obama) it was the only ammo I could get at Walmart at the time. Great gun and great round. I picked up a glock 23 not only for the .40 s&w but for the ability to throw a .357sig barrel in it to keep feeding it when one type of ammo gets to hard to find.

Thanks for a great video on the .40 S&W cartridge. I selected the S&W M&P .40C for personal use. This pistol came with 2 size grips. I have large hands and the large grip is a good fit to my hand. My little finger just naturally folds beneath the bottom of the grip when I draw it. This is comfortable in my hand when I fire it, including rapid follow-up shots. I prefer Winchister PDX 1 or Speer Gold Dot. both in 165 JHP.

Good video 👍 I edc my Gen 5 Glock 22 MOS with a holosun red dot and Streamlight Tlr1-hl light everyday. I use Tier 1 concealed MSP flex appendix holster with the extra mag carrier attached. I love full sized guns because of my hand size. Capacity now a days is irrelevant with many reliable mag extensions such as shield arms, taran tactical, slr . You can have standard 15round mag or 20rounds with a extension. I use a +3 taran tactical extension in the gun so that’s 18+1 with a 20round reload. The +3 doesn’t stick out far at all and I’ve never had a problem

Great video. I have pistols chambered in a few different calibers, including .40 and 9mm. Modern 9mm is very effective, but if you compare a 9mm Gold dot or Federal HST to a .40 equivalent, there's no question the .40 hits harder. The energy lb/ft of a typical .40 S&W is equal to or greater than that of a typical .45 ACP, but the capacity in most guns is closer to 9mm. IMO .40 is a more versatile caliber. There are target loads pushing barely over 300 lb/ft, and +P loads close to 600 lb/ft. 9mm can't do that. With .40 you can potentially use the same pistol for concealed carry, home defense, and even large predator defense with +P hard cast. Something like a S&W compact 4 inch or Glock 23 would allow that.

Thanks for the video. There are 3 things that change recoil which are firearm weight, projectile speed, projectile weight. If any one of those is changed there will be more or less recoil depending on the change. A Glock 17 recoils less than a Glock 22 and similarly the 19 and 26 recoil less than the 23, 27 due to the base firearms in each size weighing essentially the same as the same size but different firearm. 9mm projectiles typically range from 115-147 grain. 40 S&W typically run 155-180 grain. There are options outside the listed weights but these are generally what's seen. Speeds for the 9mm are in the 1100-1200 fps range and the 40 S&W commonly go 850-1100. The numbers of each caliber and firearm show why a 40 S&W recoils more than a 9mm. Same weight firearm running a heavier projectile at similar to slightly slower speeds depending on load. The felt recoil of a 40 S&W is more due to these factors. Run a 40 S&W in a heavier platform like a 1911, CZ 75, Or S&W 4006 and the round becomes easier to shoot well.

The 40 is not chambered in 1911.why????????
@parrisgeorge9708
@parrisgeorge9708 2 жыл бұрын
Typically the 1911 platform will go to the 10mm due to the length and overall size of the round. I don't remember if 1911 production firearms are/we're chambered in 40S&W. The other thing with running a 40 S&W in a 1911 could be feeding reliability if there's not a supply of compatible magazines. Just a couple of thoughts

“40SW is a dead caliber.” Not even close! Regardless of what the Feds are doing, less than half of the law enforcement agencies in my area have switched to 9mm. Some of those who did still allow the individual officer to choose which caliber they will carry. I’ve asked around and this is also true in other states. If the agencies who actually made the switch hovers around 50%, how can it be a dying caliber? I’ve been watching your presentations on the different calibers and am impressed with your evaluations of each caliber. Which caliber you choose is less important than knowing/understanding its limitations and practice. Would love to see your evaluation of the 38 Special if you haven’t done so already. New subscriber!

The history of the .40 S&W has it's origins with the .41 Magnum S&W revolver. It never gained the popularity with LEO who it was designed for but the frame is simply too heavy to be a practical everyday carry. But it's advance is 20% less recoil than the .44 S&W Magnum and stopping power greater than the .357 Magnum that was currently in use at the time.
