This video is about the design - and gives an overview of - an Alien inspired battleship design. I will share thoughts, analysis and some views of the blender 3D models to best explain how it relates to the venerable and famous Nostromo and Sulaco designs, how they differ, and what my general thoughts were during the design process.

I don't know if the Nostromo would need air intakes being a spaceship. But it probably needs some kind of braking and landing thrusters. Many spaceship designs omit the fact that ships in a Newtonian universe need to decelerate as much as they accelerate. And if they don't want to have to do a flip when decelerating, as the ships of The Expanse tend to do, they sure need about equally as much forward facing reverse thrusters as aft main drive ones. And depending on the location and symmetry of these thrusters, they can also double as maneuvering thrusters for yaw/pitch. Awesome model design as usual btw.

Yeah, you are right. It’s probably just thrusters. But I still like ambiguous design ;)

I recommend using lens sim. Also try adding more minUte grunge/weathering on the ship. Make sure angle is at 0.546. Maybe do a bit of JS-Displacement on the hull, not too much though.

Great design, clever how the Tantive fits in so well with this aesthetic. Feels like the Earth-Alliance warships from Babylon 5, those were ALSO inspired by Alien/Aliens iirc.

your camera work in Blender is second to none.. simply impressive. Do you have photography experience, or was this skill learned purely for 3d work? And any pointers/tutorials/etc on how to achieve it?

Thank you. I don't have any usable camera experience, but have made a few wedding videos. My experience comes from watching a lot of movies, I suppose :) I will do a course on it at some point.

@@technouveau_art Sorry, I mean that if the ship was intended only to land on small planetoids with one tenth of earth's gravity (0.1g), a ship of that size landing would be more practical and likely - and this would necessitate the downward thrusters.

Interesting design evolution. The Alien and Star Wars universes stress the "heavy use" aspect in their designs. On the Super Nostraco, I would have added more visibly pronounced hanger bays just for a visual just to enforce the idea that this is a carrier.

The SuperNostraco is extremely impressive. It even gave me Klingon Bird of Prey vibes. I wish you were the lead designer of the Star Citizen ships because some of their designs are questionable. They're not all bad. It's just that I think your style of design is more cohesive than theirs.

Sulaco never lands, they land with the lander, just some little movie info. The landers name was "Bug Stomper" 😄
