Concerns about new hotel in Bo-Kaap

The development of a new multi-storey hotel near the country’s oldest mosque is causing major controversy in Cape Town’s Bo-Kaap. The proposed building will be located less than 20 metres from the historic Auwal Mosque. Newzroom Afrika's Latashia Naidoo has more.

Cape Town is forcing generational Capetonians out of the Western Cape... the price of houses, rates , rent is astronomical... And we now see and influx of Americans and other foreigners and wealthier South Africans flocking here. I'm a descendent of slaves myself since 1695 but for the first time I'm considering moving away because of the rent

The DA been gentrifying that Bo-kaap for over decade now & it’s kinda sick because those people generally gets priced out by rates being raised so that they cannot afford to live there. This is impractical, they'd have to raise enough funds to buy all the land around the Masjid as all those surrounding areas are possible development plots.

This mosque had its origin in the era of Dutch and British colonialism and for the exact reason of opposing these forces, the mosque was established. The mosque is thus a direct symbol of agitation against injustice and subjugation. The Muslim community is obligated to voice their dissatisfaction with this infringements on its social and cultural landscape.

The bo kaap has a rich Muslim heritage that needs to be protected at all costs. There is a difference between calling ppl to prayer and drunks and booming music. These ppl suffered during apartheid and suffering again from European gentrification. The Europeans want to go to bo kaap but don't care about the Muslims living there.

ma’am - don’t be silly now - construction happens when the owner of a neighboring property wants to build something new or improve on something already there. It’s a FACT OF LIFE and doesn’t go on forever. Moreover it doesn’t happen on SUNDAYS - there are local laws preventing that. If Muslims want to claim every day as a wholly day they must go live in the stone ages.
