Bravo soloist! Written by the English composer Ralph Vaughan-Williams in 1954 for Philip Catelinet, tuba player with the LSO. More often than not, solos for Eb bass and band are portrayed comedically or characterised as some sort of proboscis wielding animal. Not so, here. RVW saw past all that superficial claptrap and wrote the finest lyrical work (in my opinion) for solo tuba there is; in what is a fairly limited repertoire by the way Most definitely influenced by English folk tunes, as is much of this composer’s works, but immensely sophisticated and a must-listen-to for all discerning banders. Requires every sinew of the soloist’s technique and control, especially in the upper register, to perform well, without sounding strained. Not sure who transcribed this for brass band? To conclude, Siebert's Bombastic Bombardon remains my fav, though.
