This is the kind of cinema that we need. More such movies please.

I 100% agree. They can make ten of these movies for the price of one Joker: Folie à Deux.

Agreed! Fiennes will definitely be in the mix and I bet it will get nominated for some technical achievements as well.

I'd love to see the movie biz adapt more bestsellers and the publishing industry needs to rediscover their love of this kind of material. I miss the days where every grocery store and drug store had a long rack of juicy page-turners.
@ray.b.7512 күн бұрын
Just finished watching it, the phrase “simple yet elegant” comes to mind. I love this kind of movies, shows a great deal of restraint by the director by not pushing too much plot or characters. In depth character studies done subtly and with precision.
@ray.b.7512 күн бұрын
And thrillers gain a palpable claustrophobic feel when most of the movie is filmed in one closed-in venue; i.e. Crimson Tide.
@nonsequitor13 күн бұрын
So sorry you had to go through that experience🙏. And yet again, thanks so much for calling out crappy modern day movies *without* the anti woke brain worms. It's ages since I've heard someone makes a point as relevant and accurate as flagging the importance of all the book adaptations in classic 90's films being less crap than the current big Studio dross.
@geekinwithJamesHancock12 күн бұрын
In the Nineties we had so many movie adaptations of great page-turner bestsellers. Not sure why Hollywood ever abandoned that category but I'm ready for thrillers to make a comeback.

As someone who has absolutely no interest in the Papal politics of the Vatican, I was very surprised at how much the trailer intrigued me. I'm glad it seems to be getting good reviews and I'll be looking to see it!
@geekinwithJamesHancock12 күн бұрын
I'm right there with you. I don't follow the politics of the Vatican at all, but this flick does an amazing job of sucking the audience right into that world.

Glad to see a mid-budget, character-driven drama out there. These were the kinds of movies I was hooked on in the 90's. Who knew that 2024 would be the year that we would see more movies aimed at adults. Thank you for this review, James! Have a good weekend.

Hope you have a good weekend as well! Eagerly awaiting the final box office tally to see what kind of audience there is for this kind of movie.

“Anora” pushed “Inside Out 2” out of my Top Ten Best Films of 2024 list. “Conclave” pushed out “Furiosa” off my list. “Dune Part 2” is holding on to the crown in the face of powerful competition. “The Brutalist” may be the Lisan al Gaib’s most formidable competition this year (that brutal run time tho). 👑#1. Dune: Part Two 🥈#2. Anora 🥉#3. The Substance Strange Darling Oddity Conclave Hitman The Wild Robot Challengers Love Lies Bleeding

Very solid top 10 list, but I have a feeling The Brutalist and perhaps Nosferatu might force all of us to rearrange our lists a bit.

@@geekinwithJamesHancock Those are the only two films standing in the way of Dune: Part 2. Let’s see if one of them can convince and inspire me to take the number one spot.

The twist at the end made sense to me - since the story favoured the need for a progressive Catholic Church. We're in an age where the role of women is being questioned and redefined. Your problem with the end of the movie should be aimed at the book's author, and not the filmmaker.
