Aerospatiale/BAC Concorde is a supersonic passenger airliner, developed by the British-French Aerospatiale/BAC consortium in the 1960s.
The first made its maiden flight from Toulouse on 2 March 1969. The market was predicted for 350 aircraft, and the manufacturers received up to 100 option orders from many major airlines. In 1975, the Concorde finished certification.
Being a supersonic aircraft the Concorde has a unique design: tailless plane with a narrow fuselage, delta wing and 4-abreast turbojet engines. The airliner could maintain a supercruise up to Mach 2.04 (2,500 km/h; 1,550 mph) at an altitude of 60,000 ft (18,3 km).
Delays and cost increased the program cost. At that time the problems of a supersonic flight and operational costs made the aicraft not enough commercial effective. The airliner was operated from 1976 until 2003 by just a few airlines.
The Concorde is one of only two supersonic airliners, which have been operated. It was a competitor of the Soviet Tupolev Tu-144 supersonic passenger airplane.
