Probably a step or two beyond the tech of the time. For a commercial airplane it was not a financial success. Still, it put the aviation industry of Britain and France back on the map. It definitely enabled the success of Airbus, another Anglo-French joint venture.

@Hawkeye Mods Of course, and the reasons---are varied, Both Airlines had signed a contract, agreeing, that if one company ended schedule services with Concorde, the other would, also. The French, after the terrible crash, could not afford all the safety updates forced on them, and had a history (revealed in a TV documentary ) showing they had not always, complied with certain new procedures. This has been contested by the French, unsurprisingly. Two high tech company's, that made special service parts for Concorde, went broke, they also provided parts for Britains only remaining Vulcan Bomber, which also, had to be grounded, only more recently.. Politics also came into it. BA. would have continued with Concorde, but through French insistance, ,all planes lost their Airworthyness certificates. They were destroyed. All Concorde engines, are now scrap. They had to be started and run, every few days, for technical reasons. Regarding cost of fares, if a Concorde was suddenly put back in service, I'm sure that ( judging by the thousands of comments online) the queue for tickets, would be endless. The rich, have always paid for luxury, and / or speed. Be it ocean Liner's, Fast Trains, or Concorde.

Me too, I used to live half a mile from Filton Aifield and Concorde assembly hall. When those engines were being tested and developed. , well you can imagine, everything else stopped. Sometimes A Vulcan nuclear V bomber would visit for check-ups. As you'll know, Concordes engines were based on the Roll Royce Vulcans. engines.

1/2 I remember 1978 being a small boy at a air show. We were standing as close to the runway as permitted. At that age Concorde was stuff every little boy dreamed of. Sitting on my dads shoulders i remember seeing her start the take off run, getting faster and closer to us with every second. Overwhelmed with excitement, fixated in wonder as it rotated right level of us. The noise was defining, the air shook and the vibration went right through my body. Memories of that childhood moment....

I understand your point but mid-20th Century technology produced some pretty amazing things even by today's standards, many of which we probably wouldn't be bold enough to build nowadays even with today's vastly improved technology. Concorde, SR71, XB-70, B58 just to name a few... And to think k what else COULD have been built if profit and politics didn't often come first. It was an amazing time with quantum leaps in performance and corresponding pride in achievement I'm wondering if we'll ever see again... I can only imagine what it must have been like for the privileged few who got to fly on it. What an amazing machine.

I may have been at this same air show on this day. Remember multiple flights, it was relatively cheap to take a quick spin up over northern Canada and back. Like $750 IIRC which was a pittance compared to a one-way transatlantic ticket. Still have A LOT of Hi8 footage from Oshkosh in the 90s that I need to convert. Will upload some when I get it digitized.

Nick Magee - Brown. I just love this sort of envious statement. Take an average person and give them the option of flying at 80,000 feet at Mach 3, stuffed into a 'space' suite with the nearest toilet some 16 miles away and sucking through a tube for a drink OR flying at 60,000 feet at Mach 2.04, in your own comfortable clothing, in an air conditioned cabin, with the toilets a few steps away, eating a 5 course meal and drinking champagne from a glass.

Old person here, when I first joined BMA Ltd at LHR on the DC9 in late 88, our crew car park and some long stay parking ran between the northern airfield boundary fence and the A4 Bath road. Every time a Concorde departed, the glorious sight of the most beautiful aircraft the world had ever seen and the ear splitting roar of her four Olympus engines on full reheat would diminish towards the west and be replaced by a cacophony of car alarms set off by that ear splitting roar. Amazing how many people got back to their car after a long trip to find the battery completely flat!

Follks, want to know how good Concord was, consider a Bus quicker than an F1 car, Concord proved that it would be possible to build a passenger bus to race an F1 car, travel further and you wouldnt have to pee yourself doing it. The best areoplane ever built, one crash and it was withdrawn, if we withdrew everything that failed once we would now be back living in caves.

it was politics too---the French didn't want to keep paying for the rising cost of maintenance and upgrading, and Britain couldn't go it alone. Besides, they both signed a contract, right at the beginning, that if one halted the project, the other would too

@bringbackdeano 3 жыл бұрын
It wasn't just one crash. The aircraft was expensive to run, could only fly supersonic over water so had limited routes it could fly and Airbus were about to stop furnishing it with spare parts. Also, 9/11 occurred around the time it was back in service and a lot of people were put off flying for a while. It was also the only plane in BA's fleet that required a flight engineer. Basically it was a technological masterpiece but a financial wet blanket.

This Concorde departure was made with ZERO AFTERBURNERS probably due to regulations. Having witnessed numerous Corcorde takeoffs from Heathrow (London), they are always done with FULL AFTERBURNERS although runway length all exceed 12000 feet. Even more spectacular. [Melbourne Australia 2022]

Concorde always took off using afterburners once she reached a certain height after takeoff the afterburner was cut and the nose raised once Concorde reached the Atlantic Ocean then clearance was given for the afterburners to be reheated to get her Mach 1 cruising speed

@jonny96, I have seen a number of airshows and been 'lucky' enough to have been just 100m from the side of a runway when Concorde rotated on take off. The noise from a small aircraft (F15, F22) is loud, but from Concorde it is much louder and really does make your insides shake. Also he might have warned the crowd about other aircraft but they are not shown on this video. But then again have you ever heard an early morning VC-10 take off. No need for alarm clocks!

I was stationed at RAF Lyneham in the mid seventies and often took a trip to Fairford to watch her take off. What an absolutely amazing sight and sound. If you ever get the chance, go and see the Vulcan XH558. It's an equally impressive performance and she should be around for a few more years yet hopefully.

+Léo VanWillem Concorde was built through bilateral agreement of Britain and France, before the EU even existed. If we tried to make it now, the EU would probably shut it down because of "environmental regulations" or some other ridiculous Eurocrat reason!
