I’m the homeowner. Just came across this video of our driveway. We noticed the next morning the concrete did not look right. My husband is in the construction biz and he said right off it looked like it was contamination. We knew it wasn’t any fault of Dave’s crew because he did a beautiful job on neighbors driveway across street. We notified Dave immediately and he was very responsive. We kept wetting it per instructions for a couple weeks and it just kept getting worse. Yes we were stressed because in these times so many don’t take responsibility for their work. We are so grateful to have chosen a contractor with high standards and integrity. He put us on his busy schedule and redid the driveway a couple months later. And it’s beautiful. Seems funny to say that about a bunch of concrete but what a huge difference it’s made for us. Our old driveway was collapsed and cracked from dead tree roots. Love it!

First off, thanks for standing behind your work. That's the mark of a pro for sure! But I have a few questions. 1. I've noticed those holes in concrete before have been caused by pumping on muddy ground and chunks of mud are just finished over. Then a few days or weeks later, the finish breaks through and the mud gets washed out. Could that be the case? 2. I would think that creating the control joint with a deep jointer would be better because you establish the control before the curing process ever starts. Am I missing something? Not a question but a comment, a few cheap insurance policies I use are, I've never had a complaint about too any saw cuts. Only visible cracks. I add fiber to everything, and I always have the plant bring at least 1 test cylinder for every 50yds. I label them with address, date, and time, and I keep them until the warranty expires.

My career was in concrete, asphalt, sand & gravel. Adding fiber to 'everything' you pour is a waste of money in 90% of the applications you are likely doing. Most issues/problems in concrete boil down to two reasons- 1-poor materials going into the making of the concrete and 2- poor/incorrect sitework and finishing of the mix. I've batched and oversaw the batching of concrete for everything from driveways to high rise buildings and had less than 100 yards rejected in my entire career over 30 years. Quality control of materials and finishing is highly overlooked.

The long cracks appeared because water was absorbed into the ground faster than it evaporated from the top - wetting the soil mitigates it by 10% tops, you need to put a 3mil on the ground to eliminate water absorptions. The "spider web" cracks are happening because the surface dried faster then it should - cover it for 3-4 days and actually slightly wet the surface every day in the morning. @gregchapman68972 жыл бұрын
Reinforcement "is primarily used in slabs on grade to serve as a control of cracking due to shrinkage and other effects" (Designing Floor Slabs on Grade, Boyd C. Ringo and Robert B. Anderson, p. 11). The reinforcement will not prevent cracking but will minimize cracks and maintain aggregate interlock. Rarely would reinforcement be used in a driveway to provide structural strength. There is a somewhat complicated subgrade drag equation used to determine the amount of reinforcement needed for shrinkage crack control. The idea is for the reinforcement to take over the tension that would have been on the concrete had it not cracked. In a slab with shrinkage control reinforcement, the reinforcement must be placed "above the mid-depth of the slab (ibid, p. 18). YES, the fiberglass rod is very low. It does almost nothing at that level and also totally ignores the requirement for coverage of the reinforcement by the concrete.

“He” didn’t do a “bad job”, something was wrong with the concrete mix/ratios from the concrete plant/company. It happens sometimes. As long as it’s properly fixed & doesn’t cost the homeowner anymore to fix it, then customers will still talk & spread great things (word-of-mouth) about his work ethic & integrity… & that he can be trusted to come back & fix anything should they somehow experience any (generally rare/uncommon) issues. Nothing better than knowing it’ll be done & done right, or it WILL be done again 100% on the company’s dime. 🤷♀️

Yes I respect that your company stood by their work. I would suggest using chairs in the future to hold up your reinforcement. I saw your boys pulling up the steel as they went along but it’s tough keeping that steel up when your stepping on it while working the concrete. If you review your video you will see that most of your reinforcement was on or near the ground which means your rods were useless on countering any tensile stress on any ground upheaval.

David, you seem like a good guy and an honest contractor so cheers to that. On the other hand I felt the need to comment as I saw so many issues and as a concrete producer for over 40 years really dislike the "CONCRETE" gone wrong title. Can there be issues with concrete production and delivery? Absolutely. But to name the company in the video and then the "across the street didn't crack" company, you inherently stated the National is bad, Cemex (I think that's the name you used) is good. Those Shrinkage and Map cracks could have been caused by 100 different things. Were the weather conditions IDENTICAL for both pours? Same slump concrete? Same sealer? Do you know 5mph of wind, direct sun vs shade, or a slightly higher ambient temp can do exactly that to the surface vs. "across the street"? Now for the reinforcement. Is it possible the fiberglass\plastic rods have the tensile strength of steel? Absolutely. But what about bond strength? Smooth plastic vs. raised edge rebar. Let's ignore that (as I'm sure the manufacturer did) and talk about the placement. I see you tied it off into sections and will make the assumption the rods could not slide in place, good. The problem is the reinforcement, to be effective, needs to be ~2" from the surface of the concrete (5" slab) and be VERY uniform in depth. Your reinforcement all ended up stomped down to the bottom, which renders it totally useless and IF there are sections that didn't (so its up and down in the slab) it actually is worse that none at all. As for the .6 lb per CYD of microfiber per CYD, all reputable microfiber manufacturers (there are some BS off-product salesman that say different) dosage rate starts at 1.0 lb, and the reality is even a 1.0 lb. microfiber is relatively useless for anything but surface impact spalling. If you want to use fiber use 4.0+ lbs per CYD of Macro-Fiber (Forta-Ferro is excellent) and get real integral reinforcement. Your waiting two days to saw-cut can really bite you in the butt if you have two sunny\windy\hot days, shrinkage cracking will occur in the 1st 24 hours. Possibly look into a soft-cut saw to get it done early. Last but not least you offered to spray form release oil on the trowels, this is a horrible idea as just 1 drop of this oil finished into the surface of the concrete can destroy an area. Please consider a concrete course that your local NRMCA most likely puts on, you have the heart, just need a bit of guidance! Best of luck!

5:25 Based on how that's coming out, this problem is almost guaranteed to be caused by a bad concrete mix. If they're not a typical source for your mud, I'd strongly suggest you black-list them and never again use them for your projects... Depending on the costs involved, I'd also suggest Suing to recoup your costs (original pour, removal and replacement) of the concrete and man-hours and Court Costs...Causing Bad-Blood between you and the concrete supplier shouldn't be a problem if you're going to Black-List them anyways...

@3ormorecharacterstimes22 жыл бұрын
Wrong, I see this all the time. I drive a concrete truck and what I see is mind blowing, the concrete batch goes out to the job-site correct as to the specs the contractor orders the mix. Problem is when the truck gets there, the laborers, which 90% don't speak english add water to the mix to thin it out, not just that but in order to cut costs after forms are set they will bring in loose dirt and backfill the pour area decreasing the amount of concrete needed, this leaves a couple inches soft fill that in time will settle making the slab break. The reason they will add so much water is to make the job so much easier, just pure laziness. The bubble holes appearing is also an indication of heavy water mix as well as they didn't work the finishing very well at all.
@hvachacker5862 жыл бұрын
Only way to fight supplying company is take sample or two from each truck before any water or fiber is added. I use to do work in SW Florida and we seen many of samples fail at testing lab. Anything on a high rise is tested. They also did not like fiber in anything greater then 3500lb. Fun when a post tension slab fails when the cables are pulled🥺

Love the videos, and I think you guys do some nice work, I’ve just always wondered why you trowel a driveway before a broom finish, when you can get a super clean flat finish from a mag, and a good straightedge man.
