very true i was in the music scene and got a bit popular underground, about 17 yrs ago a guy in california was basically trying to online bully me and threaten me. he did this for 5 yr straight and i just kept blocking him. eventually after 17 yrs he finally got as popular as i was 17 yrs ago and toured to one of my local clubs where i knew the entire staff, and my friend was the person who booked him. although such a long time had passed i confronted him and tried to ask to put everything behind us, the guy got a attitude and before he finished even yelling at me i pushed him really hardto get enough distance to swing at him and busted his nose wide open. he had to go in theback room and walk past the crowd and sit with the other musicians trying to get his nose to stop bleeding. it humbled him pretty quick. i realize its petty at the age of 43, but hey, whatever lol

Just a little advice... Doing concrete work is tough. But structure your payments as follows 30% up front, 30% when all the form work is done, 30% when the concrete shows up, 10% on final inspection. And 15% labor increase on any change plus extra materials cost multipled by 3. People like him take advantage of honest professionals like you.

I owned a landscaping company, in our contracts we would add the wording. After signing if the customer wanted to change anything then a new contract would be written up with an added 10% fee.

You don’t need to write up a new contract. You write up a change order. The change order will: describe the change/added work, the cost of the work, and the General Contractor fee and overhead percentages on top of the cost of work.

I was a painting contractor. I was only treated like this once. It was General remodeling his own home. He tried to burn everyone who worked on it. He was heavily in debt and ended up getting foreclosured on and losing everything. I found out later that the contractor who made the cabinets beat the crap out of him about 6 months later.

I painted walls and floors at a 6 car repair garage. After completing the paint on floor began bubbling and peeling. Owner mentioned that they had a 500 gallon used oil spill recently that covered entire area. If i knew this in advance i would have refused the job. Like painting an oily sponge. Finally after much bs from the guy i told him i was calling the EPA and having them pull soil samples under his foundation and if they found contamination he was looking at a fine, loss of business and the cost to have the entire site dug up and desposed of. He paid in full and i never heard from him again.

Sorry for the bad luck on the floor job! I am a retired Painter and have always used sulfuric acid to clean concrete floors, I also mop with soap and water, before and after the acid wash. Before painting I would brandish with Burlap cloth. Also make sure all moisture has evaporated. I use a industrial fan for drying and depending on humidity and temperature conditions.

That was a technical concrete job which was executed very well. The forming looked correct, the grading appeared very accurate, the rebars were evenly spaced and on chairs, pitching all those surfaces into the drains with what looks like minimal slopes and working around all those obstacles with 4500 psi mud and putting a beautiful finish on it with all the edges and control joints finished nicely. Wow. You're very good and you've obviously got a great crew. I believe the customer is a criminal that should be in prison.

My father was an electrical contractor and used to run up against this sort of thing all the time. One project, everything was super urgent and all the trades were working overtime to get it done. I remember working at 9pm in the foyer, putting up lights, while the painters were painting the walls, while the plumber was installing a fountain while the landscapers were finishing the garden. There were ~8 of us all working on top of each other. It was chaos. When project was finished (on time), the guy turns around and says to all the trades "accept a 50% discount and I will pay you or you can take me to court". Most of the little guys couldn't afford the time/cost of the court option and accepted the offer. My dad was stubborn and refused to "feed the sharks" so he got together with the plumber and took it through court. It takes a long time and costs a lot (and with the stupid legal system, there are no guarantees). They won in the end and received payment for everything - the guy ended up paying way more in legal costs than he owed anyone - so it was a win for the lawyers. I have many more stories like this...

I worked in the construction industry for almost 30 years and I agree with you , the was done properly . This is also the reason why I left the industry , because of customers like this guy .I had reached the point where I was debating wether I should bury people like this guy in the concrete , but I decided not to go to prison and leave the field instead . Man it’s a dangerous feeling when you reach that point. I’m a draftsmen with 23 years experience and when I would have to do job site visits (one in particular where they didn’t follow the plans at all but blamed it on us and wanted chargebacks). They didn’t count on us driving 3.5 hours to the job site the same day. We got there and they the erector company, decided to start cutting rafters. Well if they looked at the plan they would have seen they were just putting the ridged Frames together wrong. Thankfully we didn’t have to pay them anything. But I sure did think about making The foreman on that crew disappear when I kept telling me I was wrong. Then I show him and his crew that they were putting it together wrong…. Complete silence.

All he can really do is put a lein against the property. My best guess is this is a $7000-8000 job. I’m guessing the customer paid half. To hire an attorney it would cost 3000-4000. 2k retainer fee plus 200-300 an hour for each hour the attorney works on the case. So it’s not worth it to sue.

I would definitely pursue legal action against him. You're so smart to video your work. I love you and your dad's videos, and I think your work is second to none. I assume some of those saying you should take it apart are joking but just in case theres someone reading who might find himself in a similar situation and doesn't know any better - don't. Paid for or not, in the eyes of the law in most parts of the world and the US that is part of his property now and you could be arrested for anything from vandalism to destruction of property if you try to demolish or sabotage it 4. When I first meet a potential customer I try to get a feel for mental stability, I construct it as an interview and try to get to know the person - we dont have to be friends though that's nice, but we do have to be able to work together - this is a critical step I would advise everyone to take

I had a right twat of a customer years ago. He was high up in the Local Authority and in charge of housing etc. the kind of person you felt you could trust. At the start he said “I trust you Den, I don’t feel we need a contract do we? Anyway the job started. He kept changing things to what they were on the drawing saying his wife could not see how it was on a plan drawing but more when on site. One morning he says the four window openings we had in the brickwork needed moving to accommodate the furniture etc.etc. The he wanted a wall demolished and moved further to create a bigger room. Instead of the staircase as shown on the drawing he wanted it in another direction. Loads and loads of variations. Anyway come the payment time, all of a sudden he was not happy with the work and refused to pay. Kept fobbing me off each time. Eventually a letter arrived from a structural surveyor he had out to do a survey on my work. The report highlighted how poor I was as a Builder noting that the building was nothing like it should have been on the drawing. Pointing out the wrong position of the windows. Stated that a wall was not in the right location. Even highlighting that the staircase was facing in an opposite direction to that on the drawing. He got me hook, line and sinker. A deliberate sting. £27000 it cost me. I felt suicidal. He said he was going to bring another contractor in to finish the work and would use the money he owed me to pay the new contractor. You hear people talk about cowboy builders, well let me tell you there are far more cowboy clients than builders. Bastards.

As a contractor myself, I have to admit that you did an amazing job. I find that sometimes, when I get a bad vibe from a customer, I will "over" quote, because I know it will be a difficult job. If I am wrong, and the customer turns out to be a good guy, I will give him a discount at the end of the job. 90% percent of time, I guess right.

I'm a drywall contractor, and I've been doing drywall for over 40 years. My brother asked me to look at a patch job with him. Water damage on a ceiling. Someone tried fixing it before. When I walked into the house, the elderly woman said that she could see it in her sleep. I turned around and walked back outside. I told my brother that I didn't want anything to do with that job. He asked why? I told him if she could see it in her sleep, we could never satisfy her. He didn't listen to me. He went and fixed anyway. He never got paid for his work and was also stuck with material bill. You and your men did an awesome job on the slab! We have to watch out for the so-called religious ones and the rich ones.

Please hold that abuser accountable - he owes 100% plus every change order (rebar, rebar chairs, the upcharge on the 4500psi concrete, the oiling the forms, the extra labor for the 4500 psi concrete (and mark up the labor even more for “last minute” change where you had to scramble to find them)). File and perfect your mechanics lien. Take him to court - preferably small claims, if your jurisdiction permits that. With your documentation and videos, I can bet that most judges would side with you right away.

Contractors should understand and inquire when red flags appear when quoting. The first minute of part 1 clearly shows that Odell's had those red flags but chose to ignore them. I've been licenced in construction and building houses since 16 years old, worked in the UK for 5 years and now own concrete trucks....... Never had a bad customer in over 45 years in the building industry. 🦘

I work in a small engine/ small tractor repair shop. It doesn't happen often at all, but even once in a great while, if I get bad vibes (anyone in retail or a service industry knows what I mean) off someone who want's repair work done, I'll go ahead and pass and send them somewhere else. In the old day before I listened to my gut, it ALWAYS came back to bite me. You work long enough with people, you get the vibe and youre never surprised when they turn out to be a problem at the end.

I used to do Cabinet installation. I finally had to use a 70% 20% 10% payment schedule because of people changing their minds and being flaky. 70% of the money up front with a signed contract. I know that is a deal breaker for some people, and I understand, but I had too many people change their minds and My cabinet wholesalers wont process an order until it is paid in full. This 70% included the total cost of the cabinets and a couple of days of labor for me for "slicing, dicing and repricing". The 20% was for the labor and the profit and the final 10% was at final inspection. Also, any insurance or special financial products I need that are exclusive for the job are to be paid by the customer in the 70%, up front. This is the only way I was able to stay in business and keep from theft.

Per some states law, you can only collect a certain percentage of the job upfront. Definitely not 70%. I guess if they want your workmanship that bad they'll pay it, but legally you can get into legislation over it.

As a former homeowner when I needed to hire a contractor I didn't trust them, so we agreed to 30% down to start, then 30% when half finished and the remainder when done. It turned out great and they were paid in full.

I grew up in Floor Covering and HATED it. After 5 years, I then jumped ship into cabinets/counter tops for the next 20. I had only one customer that I still dislike. I called the GC of the kitchen remodel telling him his customer was CONTINUALLY in my way. I had scheduled 5 days for the cabinet install (hoping to be done in 3-1/2) and at the middle of day two I barely had anything installed yet. The guy was always telling me he was concerned about this or that, which I understood as most do that. I finally told him, "Your kitchen is mine for a week and at the end of that week if there is ANYTHING you don't like, record it on what we contractors call a "Punch list" and I will take care of any/all of those concerns. After you are completely satisfied THEN I give you my bill and you will pay it, so please save all your questions and concerns until then." At the end of day 3, I had to ask him to take his head out of the oven cabinet as I was about to cut an access hole for the electrical and didn't want him to get cut, or saw dust in his face. (YES it was that BAD). I called the GC again complaining that if the guy was on the job in the morning I would be pulling off the job and the customer could finish it himself... Morning of day 4 I showed up explained to the customer he and I couldn't seem to see things eye to eye so I would be pulling off the job. I would rather give that amount of work away and not have to put up with him anymore. Boy did CRAP hit the fan that day... though he was upset he said he would stay out, and to ensure he would, I hooked up a leaky air hose to my compressor so it would turn on and off constantly drowning him out should he talk. I also ran a 4-1/2 D.W. screw through a cabinet, drywall and into the pocket door part of the wall so he couldn't open that and stare at what I was doing all damn day... that REALLY set him off, BUT I finally got my 4 day job done in 6. He gave me a very reasonable punch list. I fixed what his concerns were, he paid me in full and I promised myself if I EVER ran into that type of person again I wouldn't wait 2 days before telling them how the job/process is suppose to work. I do the job, THEN they give me a punch list, I fix whatever they don't like and they pay me in full and leave. This way I would only lose ONE day of work if I walked away from a job. That was the only "bad" customer I recalled in cabinets, and never had to walk off a job.... I won't bore you with the sleazy ones in floor covering!!!

I’ve been a high end commercial photographer for 23 years now and one of the biggest thing I’ve learned through the decades is spotting client red flags. Sometimes the money is great and you are so geeked to have the big job that you overlook the red flags. I have dropped jobs and given back money the instant I realize that the client is going to be a problem. It’s just not worth it. Working in fear of your clients reactions, texts, etc is not working. There are difficult clients and then thieves. Recognizing the difference is the key to happiness and success in your business. At least that’s my experience! So sorry this happen to you brother. My lifelong friend and his brother were concrete contractors and were both perfectionists. Italian boys who were 6'5" and about 250 lbs of solid muscle. They ALWAYS got paid. When I was about 15 he used me on weekends to help out and he introduced me to stone masonry. I'm 58 now and am still doing stone work. I learned over the last 40+ years that the two types of construction workers you NEVER mess with are flat workers and masons. Time sensitive mud and the pressure that you are under will cause stress. If a man tells me that he does concrete or is a mason of any type.... I get out of his way! And the other thing he taught me through observation is how to get paid! And I ALWAYS get paid. It's hard to tell a man with a cinder block or a rock in his hand that you aren't paying.

Are you licensed? If so, you need to put a lien on his house. You have video proof of the job being completed. I haven't heard the customer's side of the story but even if there's more details than what you're saying, I would never give more than a 10% discount. Any more than that, you should demolish the entire concrete.

I feel for you. I'm self employed and quickly learnt that if I have a bad feeling about a customer I turn the job down. My instincts haven't let me down. My advice is you be the boss, don't let anyone tell you what to do and if you have a bad feeling about a client don't work with them. You have to learn to say no, sometimes I feel good when I say no thanks. Don't let him get away with it, take him to court.

I've been a contractor for over 20 years no, and unfortunately there are many people like this. I would have cleaned up the jobsite and left, sent them a bill for the work that was preformed, and on that bill you put that they have 30 days to pay. If they refuse to pay I just put a lien on their home. 90% of the time they pay right away, 5% of the time they get a lawyer then pay, the other 5% pay when they try to sell the home.The main thing is to be sure you have that paper trail, fight for what you are owed, you can still do this if he didn't pay the agreed amount...

I dont know what state you re in but here in Florida a lien is only valid for 1 year. If the contractor is not suing in that year then the lien goes away. I doubt most contractors has the financial resources to hire a lawyer to start the litigation process... besides for what ? $4000-5000??

My father in law pulled the same scam on concrete and a block wall that surrounded his property. The reason he kept getting away with it is because no one filed a complaint r lein. He would boast about getting jobs at big discounts. It was sad to see work crews laboring all day then the contractor realizing he wasn’t going to get the full agreed payment.

​@@AussieTracyif you can show that the intent to not pay from the beginning then you might be able to get punitive damages on top of that, but that would be very difficult if not impossible to prove.
