We did a body shop floor and they wanted it real flat so I used Mayco screed chairs and the guys did not like them. I thought it worked great though and the floor was super flat. Screed Chairs has been the easiest and flattest way we have found to pour concrete, especially when you start using machine screeding like roller screeds or vibrating screeds. Have you ever tried the flat bar ones?

I like the idea of these screed chairs for solo work or with the help of another guy, my days of pouring for a living are over but still do my own concrete

Yeah they work great for those situations as well. We've poured lots of big slabs too with screed chairs and roller screeds.

If you have a competent crew, it is much faster and easier to set wet pads with a laser and either screed from pad to pad, or pad to form. There is nothing to set up and remove and you can be flat to within 1/8" no problem. Part of the issue is you show a bunch of videos of people trying to screed low slump concrete. With modern water reducers, there is no need for that, especially for flatwork. Also a modern vibratory screed with a large triangular profile does not sink into the concrete.

Question? Using the flat bar, does it not eliminate the need for cutting after its cured? Pouring a 20' x 60' x 4'D industrial pad in a few months.

The flat bar is a temporary rail set to concrete grade in order to ride your screed on. As you pour, you will continue to move it down to the next set of screed chairs. When screeding is finished, the rail is pulled out, and the groove is floated over and filled in, so it is not left in the concrete as your control joint. You will need to cut control joints. You might be thinking of key cold joint strips that you do leave in, and it makes the control joint. We do use these all the time, but it is not recommended to screed off of these they can sink really easy and are flimsy thin metal, and will not hold a roller screed. You can reuse the rail over and over for years. We have rails and pipes that are 20 years old and still use them as long as you keep them clean and straight.

@@redlinemanu I would pull back the flat bar then finish the groove with the edger trowel rather than fill it in. Seams like a feasible solution but I could be missing something. We are a industrial machine shop and even the smallest installation can involve several trades and in order to make thing more practical and affordable we try to do as much as possible ourselves.

If your form is set perfectly to grade, why would you not screed off it?

Forms are probably set to grade but they double check elevation with laser. They probably had a bad experience in the past. Somebody probably moved the forms and elevation was off in the past and now they double check with laser

Yeah if you don't set your own forms that's understandable
