Dont get it twisted. Can you do this ? Probably. Will it look as good and last as long as mikes ? Probably not. Only one way to get to that level of masonry competance , experiance. I am working on covering front precast steps (because they sank after dirt around house settled) with bluestone 2 foot by 3-foot squares. if i have to put in an inch to 2 inches of cement would regular gravel mix be better or you 3 parts sand 1-part Portland. would you fill the seams with Portland sand mix or some kind of grout. they are about 3/4 inch wide.

Hi Mike! My dad and I have been having fun learning from your videos. I have some roughly 2 x 2 and 1 x 1 foot areas I wanna patch on my foundation. I’m not dealing with any concrete, just the plaster over the top of it. Should I be using a rapid set mortar mix or your standard go to mixture? I’ve watched several of your videos and haven’t picked up on anything definitive. You have one video patching areas of a foundation on the INSIDE of a basement and you used rapid set mortar. The areas I’m working with are OUTSIDE and south facing (sun facing). Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Like I said, love the videos.

Hi Mike, nice video. We have a lot of concrete getting to this state. Question for you: We have a limestone front door threshold (in MI) where the top surface has been worn down by water/ice/salt but the stone is 99% intact - just a very rough/irregular surface. Is there something you would recommend to use to float on the top to smooth it out? Sure, best would be to replace it but if I wanted to make it look and feel better for a couple more years, what would be the best idea? Thanks!

Do you ever use concrete stain? Would you use stain to color the mortar between sandstone blocks? I don’t want to add color to the mortar first because I’m not sure how to mix up exactly the right color. So I’m thinking of painting the mortar with concrete stain after it dries. Hello Mike, I mixed my own concoction using straight Portland, Hydrated Lime, White Milk (bonding agent), water, ratio = 5/1/.25/.5, to squeegee over a 30 y/o driveway and I soft broomed it. It came out nice, I would like a whiter color finish because I have some lime streaks. I want a more uniform white look, to try a coat using Portland, Lime, White Playsand, White Milk, Water ratio 1/1/1/*/*, and broom this slurry over the concrete. What do you think about it?

Would I be correct in thinking that when you were younger you did patches like this without wearing gloves? If so, when did you start wearing them and was there a reason other than just the general knowledge that it’s not good to have cement on your bare skin? I'm always hesitant to use anything that’s fast setting, whether it’s mortar, taping compound or adhesive. I never moved all that fast, even when I was younger, and so I’m afraid I’ll have to throw half of each batch away.

Is there a good list of your videos? You have a set of retaining walls videos in a row with maybe 5 videos, then it changes o what concrete should I use. It says part 1, but no part 2, then skips to sidewalks 2 videos, then foundation walls #1 to #6, and so on. I feel like I'm skipping around and getting confused. Now I am working on a foundation repair. At some point I will need a sidewalk in the back, and then steps repair, etc. I know KZbin is sorting them, but I fear I'm missing good information. It's easier if I stick to one thing at a time and view them in the chronological order you made them so they build on each other. I'm about 2 hours south of you. Should I stick to your formulas? I think we get less snow and is slightly warmer. If your formulas are good enough for here, I want to use them.

HI MIKE HOW IS FLORIDA ? I'M IN THE NORTHEAST WITH A BLUE STONE POOL PATIO EMBEDED IN 4 INCHES OF CONCRETE. THE MIX USED FOR THE JOINTS LASTED ONLY 5 YEARS AND WAS TOLD THAT IS THE AVERAGE LIFE FOR THIS AREA. THIS IS A LOT OF SQUARE FOOTAGE AND DON'T WANT TO KEEP PAYING FOR THE SAME JOB 4 TIMES OVER THE NEXT 20 YEARS. IS THEIR AN ALTERNATIVE PRODUCT TO CONSIDER THAT WILL LAST 15-20 YEARS ? THANKS,HOPE YOUR ENJOYING FL.

Hi Allen, I been doing this over 50 years and learned from the guys who were building the churches and gov buildings before they came out with all these experts, I also did work for the gov. Who in my opinion overspend and overkill. heres the point if "what works in Pennsylvania dosent work in Florida, what works in Florida dosent work in Alaska and what works in Alaska don't work in sout cal. I never had an inspector yet give me a full inspection report. If your not sure of what your doing . Don't do it. By the way my dad worked at cape Canaveral back in the 50s I was a little kid then. Thanks Mike
