Mike, I'm a Florida transplant from New Jersey. The grass that we have down here is called St Augustine. You can't really grow it from seed. The grass grows horizontal runners that root into the ground. So if you have a bare spot, it will eventually fill in on its own. At the sod farms, they cut and harvest every other row, and then the grass naturally fills back in between on its own. This is also the reason that it can be installed so quickly. You don't have to be too particular about getting the pieces tight because they will eventually fill in the gaps on its own. It's also very hearty, so it naturally chokes out weeds. I've seen guys throw it over the top of existing old grass and it roots itself just fine. And they will throw down pieces that look completely dead and it grows right back.

@markhelms2287 yea it's pretty wild. Up north you have to prep the ground so we'll for sod and them meticulously lay it and care for it. Even so, sometimes it dies. Florida grass you just throw it down and it roots and grows. Also, it's very inexpensive compared to sod in northern states. A pallet of sod is like $200 compared to over $1000 up north.

I have a shop with two doors. In front of each door is a six foot pad. Between the pads, there's a narrow walkway. One end of the walkway was poured with the pad in an "L." Over the last thirty years, the narrow sidewalk cracked off of the pad, taking part of the pad with it. I cut the walkway in a straight line. Of course the concrete was too thick to go all the way through, so I had to break up the material from the cut and the broken off pad. I poured new concrete below the sidewalk part where it broke off in an undercut. A couple days later I formed up the broken part of the pad and put heavy roofing paper (tar paper) along the edge of the cut off walkway (new joint). I poured it, finished the edges, and it came out amazing. I wouldn't have known what to do if I hadn't seen your videos. Thank you!

Here in central Florida, I still use stone beneath pavers a lot of the time. It's hard to find pea gravel around here, so I will lay down a few inches of limestone and then throw a thin layer of concrete millings or sand on top of that. Stops weeds from growing between the pavers.

Nice perspective Mike. It’s interesting to see how climate dictates materials and methods when it comes to exterior concrete. No way we could get away with some of that stuff up here in Pennsylvania! When I saw him throwing water on the surface to make it easier to finish, I cringed. But I guess it’s ok down there since it doesn’t freeze. But still doing that really reduces the strength of the exposed surface. Do you know what PSI concrete they typically use for exterior flat work? Another good video Mike! Keep them coming.

I'm a northern guy who lives in Florida now. When I first moved here I thought the construction methods were garbage. But in reality, they work for the environment. Frost is a killer. Without frost you'd be shocked how long things last. My driveway is concrete, 45 years old and only has a saw cut every 10 ft. I use Mike's "painting with portland" method every 2 or 3 years and it looks like new concrete. Up north I'd be on my 3rd driveway by now.

I wonder if there’s any harm in doing it the way you were doing it up in Pennsylvania. With gravel under it instead of sand, wouldn’t the drainage under the concrete be a benefit regardless of location and weather conditions? Whether it’s freezing temperatures or tropical temperatures, I would think there would be a benefit if water gets away from pooling under it. I know they get lots of rain and hurricanes and flooding, so keeping water away from under it should be better for it, I would think. But maybe there’s a disadvantage or maybe it’s more costly than the benefits justify?
