I’ve acid etched before as a surface finish preferring it to a broom finish. I’m preparing to do the same to a new patio pour. Is it necessary I seal it after? I’m watching videos as a refresher and the acid wash seems to only be used for preparation of something to go on top of the concrete. I live in temperate climate of PNW. What do you recommend?

I acid etched my indoor garage 2x. The second time I went with 75% muriatic acid, but still not getting the smooth finish off the garage floor in many places. The floor yellows up when applied, but after being on the concrete for 10 minutes or so, it still feels like 220 grit sand paper in many places. After looking at your video, I'm assuming there may be a sealer on the garage floor which was done before I purchased. Any thoughts?

Thanks for the video! I’m staining the concrete decking around my in ground pool. I have plantings and landscape wiring around it. What acid do you recommend and should I be concerned if some acid wash gets into the pool?

I recently had a 1000 sq ft colored bluegray patio and walkway poured, and the patio came out with crazing (map cracks) over 50% of the patio, two tone colors, spotting and brown streaks, pits, a low spot and two different finishes (brushed and smooth), and efflorescence chalky finish. Everything that could go wrong, did. He poured it in 90 degree CA weather after i asked him to wait, he refused. The licensed concrete contractor said he can "fix" it with acid washing. In your opinion, would acid washing make it better or worse? Not only is it not the finish I originally wanted, for 16k, but I am concerned that the acid wash will only accentuate the problems. Will the crazing cracks and rough spots be noticeable? I think I'm getting myself into more trouble. In your professional opinion, do you think I should try it? Or ask him to unfortunately remove it.

thanks for the video! do you ever use a 20 inch surface cleaner on the concrete or only use the spray tip you used with the pressure washer? just wondering if you feel using a surface cleaner would be just as effective since it's resting directly on top of the concrete. thanks.

+thomas lopez A mechanical scrubber with an aggressive pad is excellent for most surface prep and cleaning.

+Jorge Gonzalez Acid can be harmful to plant life. Do what you can to divert the rinse water away from your plants when acid etching. You can also use Brickform E-Etch, a more mild etching compound.

If I diamond grind to remove a previous sealer, which is failing, do I need to use the acid afterward or will the grinding be enough to prepare for epoxy?

+Emily Guimont Aggressive mechanical surface preparation such as grinding, blasting, and scarifying should be sufficient. You should, however, always clean the surface and check to make sure the sealer is still removed. Washing with Brickform E-Etch (a mild and easy to use etching and cleaning compound) helps with both. If the E-Etch does not "fizz" residual sealer is preventing a reaction with the cement. It is also a good idea to test water absorption. Dump an ounce or two of water on the cleaned and ground surface. If it does not quickly absorb, the surface still has sealer or is not sufficiently prepped for your epoxy. If you are planning on using an epoxy, consider a Brickform overlay such as SM Professional Grade. Depending on your application, you may find it to be the superior, decorative choice.

Generally, yes. In almost all cases, a power troweled surface will be too tight to accept any stains, coatings, or primers. To be safe, reference the tech sheet for your epoxy primer against the floor profile and ICRI standards.

My sump pump discharged groundwater onto the driveway and created a heavy rust stain. I cannot remove with a pressure washer. Any advice?

Use a mild cleaners, such as Brickform E-Etch to remove staining or residue. If that does not work, you may need to use a stronger acid solution or mechanical methods.
