When Wes Craven filmed "A New Nightmare" back in 1993-94, he first thought that the opening earthquake scene was way over the top. That is, until the Northridge quake hit and then he was surprised at how accurate that scene was. So *HUGE MAYBE* this scene isn't so over the top *IF* a city happened to be built right on top of a supervolcano about to go full eruption which has about as much of a chance of happening as the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy paying you a visit.

Anyways, here’s my headcanon: The earthquake was caused by an underground volcano erupting, which was so powerful it caused an entire shockwave of crust, which quakes anything from a meter away from it. The shockwave could be felt in Seoul, along with other places being shook by the quake near a few miles away from the Korean Peninsula. The shockwave would later die off and would die off when it hits a few islands off the coast of Japan.

It's easy to be the armchair quarterback in this situation, but the truth is both were going to die if he was continued to stay there trying to get that clown car off of her. He did seem to stick to it to the end, but both natural flight instincts and the realization of how futile his best efforts took over. Lucky for him, and likely because of some nice heavy duty plot armor, the car he got in worked well as an emergency escape pod.
