I found this game more terrifying than most actual survival horror games. The fear of having a bunch of crazy people running around in the dark planning to jump out and just beat you to death with a blunt object is terrifying in a very special way.
@Dial8Transmition2 жыл бұрын
I agree The more the horror is grounded in reality, the scarier it is. A hunted house or grotesque monsters does not add to up the horrors we can already find in real life. In this game you walk around an old abandoned school, looking for a serial killer that is known for torturing his victims to suicide, while fending off his crazed victims and drugged up looters. Now that's fucking scary
@sukamadik59832 жыл бұрын
@@Dial8Transmition I used to do that in a massive abandoned Asylum that used to be a hospital before that. It was very old structure to the point the hallways still had the round archways. Some section had been barricaded with about 20 ft long worth of filing cabinets but we managed to cross through the top considering it was an arch so they couldn't seal it all up with that. The elevator doors would swing open if you even tap them but it was nothing but pitch black and disgusting water at the bottom. Boy was that fun 😀👍.

The fact that the same studio released FEAR and Condemned, in the same year, is just a huge show of Monolith's skill at the time. Absolute classics. Living in the age of remasters now, I'd kill for a re-release of the two, with just a touch-up on textures and fixes for modern computers. I'm a Silent Hill mega-fan, but Criminal Origins is THE most frightening game I've ever played. I yelled out LOUD at least twice in actual fear/panic! It also contains some genuinely great moments that have never left me. That point towards the end of the game where the tables have turned and the guy you've been running from is finally running from YOU, with the distortion effects on the screen... and you realize you're essentially the "star" of a video nasty! And then that final choice you get with the villain where you get a split second to act... either way, you never forget what happens. AND the corpse in the locker, obviously. Great horror uses all the tools against you, including your empathy. And I agree, it's one of the most well-constructed horror games I can think of. If only I could go back and play it again for the first time... both games need a modern remaster/facelift. (The "magic phone" you use would feel so much more plausible if it were a smartphone.)

"The Environmental Audio Extensions (or EAX) are a number of digital signal processing presets for audio, present in Creative Technology Sound Blaster sound cards starting with the Sound Blaster Live and the Creative NOMAD/Creative ZEN product lines. Due to the release of Windows Vista in 2007, which deprecated the DirectSound3D API that EAX was based on, Creative discouraged EAX implementation in favor of its OpenAL-based EFX equivalent - though at that point relatively few games used the API." The wiki entry actually has some great (arguablly indirect) info on how to make it work, at least mostly or perhaps only partially depending on several factors, right now.

I love when devs notice these things and take good care of sound design. It's the small stuff that makes it good, like ambient sound, wind, wooden floor squeaking, different footstep sounds based on the type of floor... And map design too. You're in a big area and suddenly you find yourself in a off the path small place with a cozy feeling of being in a place that you shouldn't or that nobody would know or be able to get you there thus giving you a sense of relief and wonder at the same time. When a game does that, man, it's the best. Off the top of my head I can think of HL2, HL Alyx and Mirror's Edge. But one thing I don't like it very much in games like FEAR: suspense music. Sure, it achieves its goal of injecting anxiety and the suspense itself, but this falls flat for 2 reason: it warns me that there's something ahead and the loud music prevents me from hearing footsteps, so I'm more afraid of no hearing enemies getting close rather than being afraid because of the forced atmosphere. I played the entire FEAR game without the music. Much better. PS.: Fallen Aces comes out this year :)

2:57 To me this would be the first thing I would prioritize when designing a first person experience, horror especially. And if that impact is to be conveyed in more ways than just attacks, then sound immersion would surely be the next best thing to give weight and a further sense of impact in the world you've entered into. Your footsteps. Your hands picking up objects (the texture and weight of those objects being conveyed as clearly as possible as they slide into the hands of your character), pressing buttons, pulling levers. All of this needs a certain level of clarity, weight and grit, or else it'll come across exactly the way you described, like styrofoam. One of my favorites in recent years is the sound of you descending the stairs on your way to the door at the end of the hallway in the 2014 P.T. demo. It's to this day the most realistic, weighty sound I've heard in a game, and it transports me instantly. The importance of sound is huge.

This game works as how to do horror without using Jumpscares or using a lot of them. And I generally like it's lack of explanation on what's going because the human mind will always make it more scary than if you saw it. And the levels feel like if you were walking in places that were abandoned years ago. The enemies were good and made them truly crazy people since you can get them to attack each other. And at one point it seem like the whole city is starting to go insane with reports of people attacking each other in one Point of the ame where you go outside in the city you hear police siren, helicopter up in the air and the crazy start coming out from fences and sewage holes. It is one of those rare times I felt lost and I was fine with it what we got explain was good enough and didn't try to explain every detail. It was good game that age like wine.

oof talk about a THROWBACK. I feel like by today's standards this game is criminally underrated. Definitely gave me constant goosebumps as a preteen.Heck even as a horror fan i tend to forget about it compared to Dead Space.

Condemned was the very reason I bought an Xbox 360 back in 2006. An absolutely amazing experience.

Condemned is pretty much the closest we can get to a horror game with se7en's atmosphere and feel, and i do agree that the game fumbles in the end, and i do hope that we get a remaster or remake (by remake i don't mean remove things that people liked in the original like RE3R -_- i mean to atleast fix the end and also the sequel) of both games, plus i do love horror games that go down to earth but i still like supernatural elements, i also hope more games get to borrow the in depth melee combat, because in every survival horror game, melee combat feels like how it goes in Half Life 1's "They Hunger", "Afraid Of Monsters" and "Cry Of Fear", also Doom's "Total Chaos" (smacking zombies with a crowbar/knife/umbrella/pick axe and trying not to get hit, but you do because of the funny hitbox or the fast attack intervals)
