It would only be appropriate that my next video be on who the Nationals originally were. The Expos were a team of second best. Always coming up short despite all the talent. And when they had the chance, a strike happened, canceling the World Series. It would be nice to see the Expos come back some day. But a lot needs to happen.

Montreal was screwed out of their team. MLB should have helped that team stay there but they really wanted a team in Washington so there you go. Without that strike Montreal would still have a team and probably a championship or two and I’m a Braves fan.

On March 13, 2025, Montreal Baseball Group, headed by Stephen Bronfman and Mitch Garber, will pay an expansion fee of $2.2 billion to award an MLB franchise to Montreal for the 2028 season, so the new Montreal team will again be known as the Expos and will play their home games at their new C$1.25 billion 45,000-seat retractable-roof ballpark on the former Blue Bonnets/Hippodrome site.

Even though I'm not an expo's fan but I'll admit the team had a lot of talent and potential to win some World Series. Also that was very nice for the Nationals to where an expo's logo. Hopefully Montreal can get a baseball team again.

Understand this: Partly because it is a relatively small market , partly becausee of the exchange rate on the Canadian Dollar at the time, The Expoes were created to get a cut in both the Television rights to broadcast the World Series across Canada , whether they ever got to theWorld Series or not! There was a similar arrangement for the All=Star Game. That arrangement worked well for a while, then along cam the Toronto Blue Jays into a city that was growing a lot faster than Montreal, and was becoming Canada's flagship city. Sooo Toronto had already become a bigger TV market.. Sadly but predictably just as the race issue came into play in Atlanta and Miami, the language issue issue unfortunately came into play there! The Blue Jays argued successfully that the subsidy of that TV money should be theirs and that thee expoes were only entitled to the so-called "regoional" Meaning French Language TV money, and thee National (read English) TV money was theirs. Montreeal was never compative on the best players from then on. Also in 1996 the Expoes thought that they had a deal to relace Stad Olympique, which was a disaster from the time Canada was awarded the 1976 Olympics, with a new state of the art stadium in Montreal, convienient to mass transit. As they were ready to announce the new stadium, one of Quebec's provencial politicians we=as the firast to speak. He then announced that no provencial tax payer money was going to the new stadium under ANY circumstances! The DULL THUD heard all the way to Washington was all those jaws hitting the floor at the same moment!! From then on it was not a question of were the Expoes moving it was where and how soon! Once the decision is final to relocate a major league team the process typically takes 3 years. At the same time as all of this was going on Washington DC had been promised the "Next" expansion team when it became available. Problem was that 3 citiees, Washington, Miami and Denver had all been given that same promise, but there were only 2 expansion teams to award, not 3! SOOOO, MLB had to amke the following decision: If we give teams to Miami and Washington , the American League will grab Denver, and if we award the teams to Denver and Washington the American league will grab Miami and Tampa Bay will be the odd man out. We know that the Americaqn league had just recently spent all that money in Baltimore and did not WANT Washington. So Miami and Denver it was! Now was a chance to finally get a National Leagur team in Washington. They had to make aging RFK back into a baseball stadium for a couple of years until they could get the neew stadium built and line up local ownership. Meanwhile The Marlins had an owner who was totally corrupt and was treating the team's money like it was his peersonally. The other MLB owners had already decided to boot him out and take the teeam away from him but they had no owner to award it to so they took over owneership of the team. The Expoes owner at the time, Miami based art dealer Jeffery Lauria always wante a florida team anyway, but did not seem in line for Marlins ownership Last thing MLB wanted was to own two teams in community. A deal was worked out to "swap" the Marlins for the Expoes. Even the spring training facilities were swapped. The inevitable announceement cane as late as it possibly could. A few minutes after the last game of the 2004 season that the Expoes would be moving to Washington for the 2005 season, and would hold their 2005 spring training at the former Marlins training facility at Viera Florida The new stadium in Washington was not going to be ready for two years. Just enough time to find and vet local ownership in Washington! When the new owners took over in Washington they had actually less than an expansion team. They had to sign 24 minor-lr=eague free agents just to fulfill their minor league commitment, Unlike an expansion team there were no "extra" draft choices and no eapansion draft. That is why it took so long to build the team in Washington.

The Expos made me a baseball fan life during their failed run for a playoff spot during the 1979 season. As you pointed out due to a lack of a reliable stadium or plans for a new one I can’t realistically see the MLB returning to Montreal.

All I can say is that as a Mariners fan, it feels sad that Expos never got to fulfill the chance to prove to Montreal that they were worth keeping. The year after the strike the Ms didn't even make the WS but still went out there and proved their worth. Meanwhile the Expos proved they had a pretty good shot at winning it all and never did.

Regarding the split season the commissioner approved it and asked the Rays to speak to the Blue Jays about territorial rights. The next thing you heard was that the deal fell through. It's rather obvious what happened, Toronto wanted to own the country. They made sure they would own television rights and voted for contraction. Eventually they got what they wanted. The fact that the territory was awarded to Toronto tells me MLB was in on it.

I would love to see Montréal get another MLB team, but I think in order for that to happen, a private investor is going to have to step up to fund a new stadium. Basically everyone agrees olympic stadium was a huge waste of money, and Montréal taxpayers still have a sour taste in their mouths from that whole fiasco, so I doubt they'll be willing to fund the construction of yet another MLB stadium, especially when there's no guarantee of a team returning.

You know, I can't help but wonder what would've happened if the Montreal Expos won the 1994 World Series. It's possible that if the '94 World Series gets played, and if the Expos win the Fall Classic, then they might've stayed in Montreal. It wasn't the fault of the Expos fanbase for the team leaving. It was all because of bad management on the part of team owners...something which was an all too common occurrence for relocated/defunct sports teams.

@@PenguinNote67 being from Montreal I can tell you baseball is basically dead. Travel ball is too much for the families who enjoys the game. The local neighborhoods isn’t bubbling baseball. There is no high school teams. The only sport center for serious player development is very very fringe. And local policy and business folks aren’t proposing something concrete. As you mention in the video, ownership was very cheap towards the players, especially the first stint. Loosing Dawson and Carter was near fatal to the team. 1994 could be said as being the real money ball success story historically. But they let Grissom, Alou go and Pedro too eventually a couple years ago. The stadium is a pure mess. Was never intended to be a flourishing baseball park. It literally felt hollow, I went many times. I remember watching a game against Atlanta and Maddox was pitching. It was 1994. I listened to the 9 perfect inning thrown by young Pedro against SD. We had a very good French commentary team. In the end the heart wasn’t there anymore. From the administration pre Loria and gotten worse when Loria was the owner. When you have a team chemistry you can’t abandon if they don’t make it first try. The baseball aren’t made through way. You have to push through. And Bronfman didn’t. Rebuilding after a successful year is the worse slap in the face for fans. TLDR determination is the essence in baseball. And in a game that failure is the norm more than success, you have to maintain the perseverance as ownership and add pieces. Being desperate in baseball can never be a winning position, except of Florida Marlins. We can truly see it with the 2023 Angels. Baseball is a great game and my hope that it comes back to Montreal fades.
