The Nationals winning the World Series was ‘poetic justice’ for 3 reasons: 1-After the city was abandoned by baseball for 33 years, they took over a failing franchise and slowly built a winning team over the next decade. After some painful playoff losses over several years, they finally broke through with some incredible clutch hitting & pitching to win a Game 7 on the road to take the World Series. It was well earned. 2-They defeated the cheating Astros! 3-They won the WS ‘without’ Bryce Harper! Like I said… it was ‘poetic justice’.

I appreciate the retrospective history as a Twins fan. When they won the World Series in 1987 people were flipping over cars. It was some redemption for four Super Bowl losses of the Vikings.

The 1924 Senators won the World Series, but next year's team deserved a quick mention as they were back in the postseason, clinching the AL Pennant by 8 1/2 games over the Athletics and taking a 3-1 lead in the World Series before Pittsburgh surged back to win three straight games.

As a Nationals fan who enjoyed season tickets from 2005-2009 I can pretty much say that most of us didn't care about being a losing team. Riding the high from 2005-2007 of just enjoying having baseball back to 2008-2009 of enjoying a new stadium was all that really mattered. It was 2010-2012 where I think the Nationals got serious about playing baseball when they added Harper and Strasburg. I think Strasburg is the more interesting story arc within baseball, however I think Harper may end up being the more memorable player career-wise. Also seeing Zimmerman's Walkoff HR at the 2008 opener was one of the coolest moments of my life. Unreal. I swear half of us in that sold out stadium didn't leave their sections until 30 mins after that HR. No one wanted to abandon the new stadium and the memory that was just created - it was instantly home for everyone. When I was there for the 2005 opener, I remember seeing so many people in their 50's, 60's and 70's crying, as it was the first time they had baseball back since they were young. Very powerful. I was glad to finally see them win in '19. Such a great story over the course of that season.

Honestly, even at the time the hype around drafting Harper didn't compare to the hype that surrounded Strasburg's drafting and subsequent historic debut. And I can't say that anyone really thought that Harper's absence had much to do with the 19-31 start last year; that was clearly due to a horrendous bullpen and a rash of early injuries. If I had to pick only one storyline to represent the Nats of the 2010s, it'd be Strasburg's debut, shutdown, and eventual WS MVP title.

Oh yeah, I remember when the Nationals were getting hammered over benching Strasburg during the playoffs (early in his career) because of pitch count. Well, it paid off so who's laughing now?! And yeah, I think Harper as good as he is, has always been a bit overrated in his ability to single-handedly take over a game or a series. Very few players ever have that kind of ability.

Dc fan for life, and you're right: Stras was a bigger deal.... I think the WP initially revealed the undisputed story that when Strassy signed either that first contract, or the second, he was told by the Lerners that he would be the starting pitcher for a world series!!! Bryce waited until the last minutes to sign a deal by a midnight deadline if I remember correctly, and got his attention..... LOVED this video and jaw dropped that TED WILLIAMS was our skipper (i truly didn't know that)! SO if you went to RFK Stadium (

In all honesty, MLB just isn't the same without a team i Washington, DC. It's the nation's Capitol, it has to have a team. Was really glad when this new franchise was started and am very glad to see that it has enjoyed success.

For a few years (1968-1971), my Dad took myself and my older sis to a few Senators (the team that moved to Arlington, TX, in 1972 to play as the Rangers for the past 50 seasons) games at RFK Stadium, which is supposed to be torn down next year. Our favorite players was Frank Howard, aka "Hondo" or "The Capitol Punisher".

Hondo was the only thing the Senators had going at that time he went to Texas , and then went to the Tigers for the pennant race in 1972

@@michaelleroy9281 Howard didn't take well to the Texas move, being plagued with injuries. When he was traded to the AL-East leading Tigers, he hit but one HR for them, and wasn't on the postseason roster. As the AL adopted the DH in '73, Howard was their natural choice, but he could muster only 12 HRs in hitter-friendly Tiger Stadium, and found no takers for his services the following year, but in Japan. He took but one AB for his club, the Pacific League's Lions, hurt his back, and never played baseball again. Howard actually welcomed the 1964 trade that sent him to the lowly (2nd incarnation) Senators for pitcher Claude Osteen. The Dodgers "offense", if you could call it that, relied on base running (Maury Wills and Tommy Davis) and timely hits more than power like their upstate rivals, the Giants. He actually hit 31 HRs and drove in 119 runs in '62 on less than 500 ABs (493, his most during his stay with the Dodgers), but his declining batting average and frequent injuries caused the Dodgers to trade him. He had his best years from '68 to '70, hitting over 40 HRs each year, but any consideration for MVP was frustrated by the 1968 "Year of the Pitcher" (Denny McLain, who won 31 games that year, and became Howard's Washington teammate in 1971 and LOST 22 games), and 1969 (Harmon Killebrew) and 1970 (Boog Powell) went to players on clubs that finished first in their respective divisions. At least Washington acknowledged his power feats by painting a seat white at RFK where he launched one into the upper deck (there was no lower deck outfield seating in the baseball configuration), and that upper deck, by '71, was well "peppered" where Howard had put them!

While I am happy for MLB baseball fans in Washington, DC, I wish that Washington Nationals fans had a much greater appreciation of the great baseball history and legacy in and of Montreal. Montreal is not just a ‘hockey town’. Baseball history runs deep here with the NL Montreal Expos, as well as the old Montreal Royals of the AAA International League - longtime affiliate of the Brooklyn Dodgers. In 1946 Jackie Robinson broke the ‘color barrier’, leading the AAA champion Montreal Royals! I certainly cheered for the 2019 Washington Nationals in winning the World Series, along with Hall-of-Famer Pedro Martinez - who should have won his first World Series with this same franchise 25 years earlier, as a junior member of the 1994 Montreal Expos pitching staff. MLB will come back to Montreal - too large a market to ignore with 4.32 million people. Before MLB can expand to 32 teams, however, stadium issues must first be resolved in Oakland and Tampa. Former Milwaukee Brewers owner / concurrent MLB Commissioner Bud Selig and former Montreal Expos (and later Florida Marlins) owner Jeffrey Loria should be wearing orange jumpsuits in a federal penal institution, for what they did criminally to kill MLB baseball in Montreal (and Miami). It was also sickening to see Bud Selig get inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2017, along with Tim Raines and Jeff Bagwell. Houston Astros fans also hate Bud Selig for forcing the Astros into the AL, after nearly 50 years in the National League. Basically, Bud Selig has a hand in killing two of the four 1969 MLB expansion teams (Seattle Pilots & Montreal Expos), and he was very close to doing the same with the San Diego Padres & Kansas City Royals - if local stadium issues were not resolved. Jeffrey Loria left Montreal with all computers, Expos team intelligence and other key assets, with a big OK nod from Bud Selig. Loria, who would later screw the Florida/Miami Marlins franchise, even stole the state-of-the-art spring training facility in Jupiter, FL - collaboratively developed and owned by the Montreal Expos and Saint Louis Cardinals, leaving the Washington Nationals with the Marlins old spring training facility, located in a swamp in Viera, FL.

Montreal does have a great history, but that’s just it: it’s Montreal’s. Not DC’s. Our history is the 2 iterations of the Nats that came before the Expos moved here. There’s a reason the Nats fly the 1924 WS pennant and 1925/1933 AL pennants at the stadium, have Senators/former Nats inducted into their ring of honor, wear the curly W logo and Senators throwbacks (both 1924 and 1968). It’s because that’s Nats and DC history, it’s a shared Dan base, team name, city, logo, and formerly stadium. Guys like Walter Johnson are legends here, not Tim Raines. Montreal’s awesome and I hope they get the Expos back-but the Nats shouldn’t be trying to force this fake Expos connection. It’s worth appreciating as a baseball fan, but not MORESO because the Nats sort of kind of have a connection with the Expos.

@@jeremyschooler3748 I recall as a kid in the DC area in the late 60s and early 70s that often pre-1961 Senators franchise was brought up as pertained to the then-incarnation of the Senators. More or less, the Twins, although technically a relocated franchise, were considered the "expansion" team. As they were, if anything, encouraged to go to defeat the proposed Continental League, no relocation or "expansion" fee was demanded, AFAIK. Likewise, given the relatively small dollars, on the order of a current AAA franchise, of MLB franchises, little if any fees appear to have been demanded of the second Senators ownership group.

@@michaelleroy9281 IDK why they didn't, as Milwaukee already had County Stadium. I think it was a matter of who had the strongest investment group when the expansion franchises were awarded in 1967. Plus, due to the agitation of Missouri Senator Stuart Symington, who felt that Charlie Finley had jerked them around in terms of the lease on KC's Municipal Stadium, and had purchased the KC A's with the intent to move the team all along, the four-team expansion, originally slated for 1971, was moved up two years. This caught both the Seattle and Montreal groups completely off-guard, as they'd make stadium plans with the 1971 start in mind. MLB was anxious to thwart challenges to its antitrust exemption and hence why the KC Royals. If the Pilots hadn't needed to start until 1971, they might have lasted, as the worst of the aircraft industry layoffs that devastated the Puget Sound region had abated by then. I'm sure Milwaukee would have gotten its Brewers, perhaps the 2nd incarnation of the Senators, foundering in DC, would have gone there instead of Texas, or the likewise struggling Padres would have gone there. Or certainly NLT the 1977 AL expansion; the Milwaukee market was too good to pass up on.

There was a brief attempt at creating a 3rd major league called the United Baseball League. Washington was supposedly going get a team in RFK, LA in the Coliseum, they would have been 8 teams and even the MLB Players Union would have backed it. Because it would probably mean more jobs for players

I should have caught on your mention of "RFK" in DC, as when the Continental League was proposed in 1959 (in wake of the West Coast relocation of the Dodger and Giants franchises), the then-named "DC Stadium" had just been authorized and funded and wouldn't be ready until 1962, and not renamed "RFK" until 1969.

I like videos like this just got done watching the Seattle pilot video you created.I always wondered when the senators move to Minnesota how Washington DC got an expansion team right away. The fact that they called them selves the Washington Senators again generated a lot of confusion. When you looked at player stats on the back of baseball cards.. I spent a lot of time as a kid Explaining to people Harmon Killebrew didn’t get traded from the Senators To the Minnesota twins.

The move to Minnesota was green-lighted in light of the threat of the Continental League as a competing Major League; one of the proposed franchises was to be in MSP. Indeed, the Twin Cities had almost gotten the New York Giants; as they'd been likewise frustrated in attempts to get a new stadium, as NYC fought them at every turn, including renovating Roosevelt Stadium in New Jersey, or building a joint stadium with the Dodgers (Walter O'Malley wasn't interested), which would have been where Shea Stadium ended up being. The Giants bought the Minneapolis AAA-franchise as the rules of the time gave them territorial rights to their minor league affiliates. However, Horace Stoneham was convinced that California would be better and that the other owners would put up with cross-country travel. It was when O'Malley was wooed by Los Angeles and concluded the deal to build at Chavez Ravine that Stoneham likewise committed to San Francisco, and visited the future Candlestick site in the fall of '56...when the Bay Area enjoys its typically warmest seasonal weather. If only he'd known...

Drew, the chances of baseball in Montreal are very slim. This is because the Nationals would not relocate, as they've been in DC for only 17 seasons. also, Montreal would need to create another team which would make 31 teams, and unbalance the MLB. so unless someone relocates, or more expansions teams are created, it'll be a long time until baseball is back in Montreal.

As a Nats Fan since they came to DC I would like to say while your 2min summery of the 2019 Season for the Nats is accurate it was a really Really Wild Ride to experience. And we have one of the Coolest (in my opinion) records in Bo7s where the Home Team Lost Every Game (super stressful to watch and i hope we dont experience it when we get back to the Fall Classic)

About the Padres moving to DC, there were 15 years left on the lease and their mayor Pete Wilson was going sue the DC ownership group headed by Joseph Danzansky for breaking the lease.

Yeah that’s right! They were pretty far along with plans to move, even making uniforms and renaming the padres to the “Washington Stars”. But yeah legal issues tied up everything and the team was sold to Ray Kroc instead.

Killebrew was one of the last of the "bonus babies", and IDK what the figure that kept him on the Senators, but more or less he "rode the pine" for the 1955 and 1956 seasons in DC. In effect, though he'd passed the rookie limits, 1959 was his "rookie" year. but also whiffed 116 times and his BA was but .242. He'd improve the BA somewhat, but still had a reputation as a free-swinger. He did have two season of above 1.000 OPS, 1961, and 1969, his lone MVP year.

The Nationals deal was held up by Linda Cropp about private funding, along with Council Member Marion Barry held up and the team store was shut for a week, rumors were in it it didn't work in in DC, there was group from Las Vegas who were going to play in AAA stadium while a dome was going be built. Actually they worked out a deal where they stadium was going to be built with a financial cap. Cropp actually got DC a better deal.

Yeah she was criticized heavily for that, but she did have a point that most of the people who wanted the Nats to come lived just outside the DC area and thus wouldn’t contributed any tax money towards the funding of the stadium. With private funding it would have helped offset that somewhat, but like you said she got a better deal in the end!

Pet peeve of mine: There is no "Mini Annapolis." "Minneapolis" has five syllables. There is no "an" in the middle. We are nearly 600 miles and several states away from Indianapolis. The name is a combination of the Lakota word "Mni" (water) and Greek "polis" (city). Also, the Twins originally played in Bloomington at Metropolitan Stadium, about half a mile from the airport (rather famously, now the site of Mall of America), which probably made it very convenient for visiting opponents' fans, but the Met was owned by the City of Minneapolis and they've played for 40 of their 61 years in Minneapolis proper, first at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome (1981-2009) and then Target Field (2010-present).

Another bit regarding the first incarnation of the Senators: MLB's stance regarding the Twins' history in Washington has changed over the years. When they first came to Minnesota, MLB treated it almost like a new franchise that happened to be formed from the ownership team, front office, assets, and players of an old franchise - the honors of the original franchise were treated as if they belonged to the new franchise, the future Texas Rangers. This did not change until mid-1991, when the Twins saw a postseason run go from being a laughable wish to a realistic possibility to the actual facts on the field. The '91 Twins' World Series program had a single line mentioning the Senators winning the 1924 World Series. In the 30 years since then, the Twins have embraced their full history more and more, until finally in 2021 they began flying the banners of *all six* of the franchise's American League pennants and all three of its World Series wins, finally acknowledging that the team of Harmon Killebrew, Tony Oliva, and Kirby Puckett is also the team of Walter Johnson, Bucky Harris, and Clark Griffith.

I enjoyed this baseball history video on D.C. baseball as being born in 1953 in St. Louis with my baseball memories starting in 1960 I have enjoyed reading about all I missed years prior. Is that Curt Flood talking to Ted Williams in the video? Sure looks like him as he was the Cards centerfielder for many years. The Nationals winning it all reminds me so much of when the Blues won their only Cup in 2019. I do feel sorry for the Montreal fans and the Expos always seemed to play the Cards tough. I really enjoyed all the relocation stories. Montreal first needs ownership with money that wants to invest there. St. Louis had a Rams owner Stan Kroenke take over who rejected the stadium St. Louis was able to afford and approve for building on its riverfront. St. Louis attempted to go around the owner Stan Kroenke following the NFL by-laws since Kroenke wanted no part of the St. Louis stadium so he could move to L.A. and build the greatest stadium ever built by mankind. The football Cardinals would not have moved to Arizona if St. Louis had built a new stadium for them in the same manner. There is a lawsuit over the move to L.A. coming to trial in January if it does not settle out of court, but it is true a city needs wealthy ownership that wants to be in your city.

@@selfdo You make a good point and the owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars who I believe is from Illinois tried to first become the owner of the STL Rams after the Rosenbloom children had no interest in the team but Stan Kroenke as minorty owner became the majority owner and won out. I read recently that Kroenke being from Missouri and having so much real estate development in the STL area at the time initially seemed a safe choice as a St. Louis owner but in hindeight I think his great wealth was what made him not a good fit for the much smaller STL market compared to L.A. Just moving the team there has multiplied his portfolio value even with the huge cost overrun building SOFI. I'm sure the STL stadium plans bored him compared to his plans for SOFI. You make a good point though about how much luxury is really needed to watch just 8 home games a year when no playoffs. Even the Dome seemed fine to me and I understand the initial reluctance to tear down a 20 year old building for replacement. Despite the 790 million settlement most STL football fans are disappointed an expansion team was not offered but who would have been the owner anyway? Fan ownership like that for the Green Bay Packers is no longer allowed so I have been told. Not that Spanos would move the Chargers to STL, but if he did for a new St. Louis outdoor riverfront stadium, he could move to another city in 5 years and the NFL owners would allow it if he signed an indemnification agreement where they feel protected by any lawsuits. Just joking but oly partially. It would take a local owner from STL to be willing to take on the wild ride of the NFL. Enterprise here after the Rams left came up big to build a new soccer stadium for a new team in 2023. Soccer is big in St. Louis, but once again it takes a good owner wanting to be here.

That’s a good question. Basically there’s no real difference. For me personally, I try to condense these videos into about 30 minutes or less. A lot of these topics could easily go an hour or more in length, but that takes a lot of production time and I’d rather make “quicker” videos. But it’s really semantics at the end of the day, as for some anything over 5 or 10 minutes isn’t quick at all.

I watched the stars from my own favorite team, the 84 Tigers, walk away due to BS ownership so I can empathize with the Nats. I like the Nationals. Being Canadian by birth, I always had a soft spot for the Expos and when they moved to DC I hoped they would succeed. I lived near DC for a few years when Harper and Strasberg were there and they suffered from the same misfortune as my club at that time, an unreliable bullpen. My barber was a big fan and we would talk baseball whenever I went in for a cut. I thought of him the night the Nats won the Series. Good on em I thought. I remember those Senator teams of the 1960s. Frank Howard was their big star and he later played for my Tigers. My grandfather loved the Big Train (Walter Johnson) and Ted Williams gave a great quote when a reporter asked him what the team was going to do about their lousy defense. "We're gonna hit," he said. Ted's answer for everything. Anyway, cool video. I like this channel.

Bryce Harper isn't a hall of famer. Juan Soto looks like he'll become one. Now for the past, in 1970 Senators owner Bob Short went down to Miami, Florida as he was thinking of relocating there. It was Baltimore Orioles territory as they owned the minor league franchise there. The Senator didn't have the money. In June 1970, Short offered to sell a player to the Yankees as New York wanted first baseman Mike Epstein. When the Yankees found out that it was Frank Howard they were enthusiastic. However, Short had made a trip to Miami in June and the city, the Stadium and stands were way too hot. On the visit he was drenched in sweat and way too hot. Short abandoned Miami and went to look to New Orleans and eventually Dallas, Texas. The Yankees just missed out as they had approval from CBS to buy Howard. Short nixed the trade. The Yankees then asked about Mike Epstein. The Yankees would throw in catcher Jake Gibbs. Senators owner Ted Williams got mad and said if they wanted either Howard or Epstein, he would only trade one of them for Bobby Murcer. I'm a Yankee fan. I heard about it back then. A rumor would pop up that the Yankees were looking to move to New Orleans as the Super Dome was being built. It was a ploy to have the city of New York rebuild Yankee Stadium. The Yankees also threatened to move to nearby New Jersey in the Meadowlands.

It was just a little lull as they had won their 20th world series by 1962. Now they have 27 titles but it's incredible to think that they almost thought about moving it away. CBS who owned them at the time were making billions from NFL football TV rights and didn't want to put any money into the Yankees.

The American League did seem to integrate their teams slower than the National League . I'm not a baseball historian so I don't know if it was entirely motivated by racial bias. During the mid "60's" the Twins did have players of color like Tony Oliva , Mudcat Grant, Cesar Tovar and Earl Batty . Under his realm as Twins owner, I think Griffith ran a tight fiscal policy towards player's salary ( I can't remember the Twins signing/or resigning any major free agents), but that was a common business practice among owner's back then. Are there any family owned baseball franchises today? Wasn't aware of Griffith's attitudes towards race. For some people it's hard to accept social change, on and/or off the field.
