This video compares a large diaphragm Condenser Mic Vs Shotgun Mic. Both Condenser mic types are used to record dialogue. The Shotgun mic is the usual go to condenser mic but a large condenser mic might be the better choice in some situations.
There could be a third choice that might work just as well and be cheaper to purchase.. stay tuned to find out what.

Funnily enough, I had interesting results by accident with a cheap dynamic microphone just out of frame aimed at my mouth. The only issue was noise and hiss (I was using an atrocious USB interface by Line6), so I used a strong denoise software. Apart from that and typical denoise artifacts, the voice captured that way was good enough with minimum room reverb. I will need to repeat that experiment now that I have a clean preamp

outstanding! one of the best and most understandable summaries comparing the acoustical differences between SG and condensers. The clarity and natural sound of the condenser was really impressive, but I agree that the proximity requirements may not be ideal for video. Do you have an opinion on lavs for indoor recording?

Great video, but the K2 looks unusable there because of the lighting- put the mic on the opposite side of the lightsource to avoid a massive shadow on your face.

Now I get it. Shotgun mics sounded perfect, but seeing how they work, I can see why it wouldn't want one for my in-room recording.

I prefer to hear a bit of room reverb actually I think it's a bit of a 'fallacy' to try to get the dryest sound possible at least with vlogging. It's nice to hear some 'air' some room.

but why does my yeti nano have a static buzzing noise when I connect it to my Sony a6400 camera. I even took out the Nono usb from my computer and plugged it into a power bank and still a static noise. I live in a flat is that the problem, due to not be grounded maybe. but its just seems like the ups part is the problem as I even bought a new 3 ring, 4 port aux cable as this was also said to be a possible fix but still same loud static buzzing. can you help here as otherwise I will be heading towards a shotgun mic. Thanks

I wouldn’t recommend a usb mic for direct to camera connection. They’re fine for plugging into a computer but aren’t really up to recording into a camera or audio recorder. Get yourself a shotgun mic, something like the video mic pro would be great.

Call me crazy but the “shotgun” style mic is more what I prefer because It sounds smother. With the other mic you can hear all the sounds of his Sylvia and his lips smacking like he’s in your ear and I don’t enjoy that at all.

Counterpoint: if you don't have a treated room, a dynamic mic is better than a LDC. There's a reason why Shure SM7b is so popular for podcasts after all. And in a very well treated room (or a vocal booth) shotgun mics are as very good as well, and a lot of professional VO artists use Sennheiser MKH 416 in their work. Another point to consider is that LDC picks up a lot more mouth noises, it's very clear even in this video. (also comparing a 1000$ LDC to 370$ shotgun and 400$ SDC is a tad bit unfair, but it's good enough to demonstrate a point) I just picked up Audio-Technica AT4073a, which had a 1000$ MRSP but is now discontinued and costs like 200-300$ second-hand, and in my moderately treated room (some foam on walls and ceiling, a couple bass catchers in the corners, very heavy curtains on the window and a carpet on the floor) it sounds better (at least to my ear) than SM7b that I was using previously. But since it's me listening to my own voice, I might not be impartial...

These videos are very nice and super helpful. Why are you so upset? He might have this microphone and no others of this quality, or he might like this mic the best, either way, I do not see a problem with this.
