I condition my Red Wing Iron Ranger 8111s with mink oil. I like the way the Amber Harness Leather reacts to mink oil. It darkens the leather is certain worn areas which makes the boot just pop! I replace the purple laces with a dark blue lace which looks GORGEOUS!

Totally agree on the hand application! I find that applying the oil or chosen conditioner by hand helps prevent over-application and somehow results in a nicer looking burnish. I also like to have a specific brush and dauber set that is for oil finished boots only.

Loving your work man. I tend to Mink Oil my 8111s and 8084s a couple of times a year. Then either use the leather cream or the leather conditioner every other month. The Amber Harness I'll probably Mink Oil less, but have a rag I'll just buff em up with. The Patina's starting to build nicely. It's a love thing. Just, y'know...be a boot.

I used to mink oil my “field boots” when I was in the army. It made them very water resistant. The only problem was is you couldn’t shine them with wax afterwards. Shoe wax does have oils and will preserve the leather and of course waterproofs but not as good as mink oil. When I mink oil my boots now I I use a heat gun from a few feet away. A hairdryer will work also. Then I wipe off The excess after they’ve sat for a few hours. My daily work boots or a pair of western style Ariat Cobalts. They have the Kilts on them. Excellent leather. More comfortable than the Red Wings that I own of similar style. I have a big collection of boots. (Locomotive engineer) Slag ballast is extremely sharp will chew up the soles of boots. I only buy top Quality boots.

I don't have Red Wings yet, been thinking about a pair of Iron Rangers or Blacksmiths. MAYBE the moc-toe. I have the now-discontinued Wolverine Kilometer, and those are my everyday shoes. I had used Dr. Marten's Wonder Balsam to condition them for a while and considered mink oil, but after a discussion with Horween, who make the Chromexcel used on my Wolverines, they strongly recommend Venetian Shoe Cream, which I kind of fell in love with after using. I will probably continue using the Wonder Balsam during the winter, since it contains a wax that helps repel water from the boots. Liking your channel thus far, keep it up! You've almost inspired me to buy some Blacksmiths.

Selvin R. Monzón if you want to walk in rainy weather you must use an oil or a Nikwax waterproofing product. I prefer Fiebings mink oil liquid, a combination of mink oil, neatsfoot oil and lanolin. It darkens, but if you use one layer only it will only accentuate the color of the boots. Don’t overdo it.

I have 2,question CJ. I hope you can answer me. First question: Are your 8111 boot brown? I ask because they look more like an Auburn/orange like color. My 8111 looks more like a milk chocolate brown. And the other question : is there color variations on certain areas of the leather in your boots or is it one solid even color throughout the entire boot’s leather? ? I’ve noticed that around the sides of the cap toe the leather looks a bit darker..like if it wash brushed with a darker shade. I bought these online and I was told it wasn’t a factory 2nd . I bought them on sale but I don’t want a factory 2nd . What do you think? Sorry about the lengthy comment.

InlineSix yeah the only thing I can really compare the mink oil finish/consistency to is petroleum jelly. Although it does eventually seep into the leather, it does take longer than the all natural leather conditioner to be absorbed. While the all natural conditioner will nearly immediately be absorbed.

Saddle soap removes the oils and therefore will brighten up the color a bit. If you don’t want to darken the leather on some 8111s or 8085s you can try out some Bickmore Bick 4 or Saphir leather cream. Neither of these will provide you with as much weather resistance as Mink Oil though, so it comes down to what you do with your boots and what elements you expose them to.

I imagine it uses a similar formula. On the website the Mink Oil paste lives under the Irish Setter page for 8.99$ and the Mink Oil lives under the Heritage page for 9.99$. Get rid of the flat laces; Too old skool! You really can't beat the indestructible paracord as a substitute. If you really must use mink oil wait for a hot summer day rub your boots with a liberal amount of oil and let your boots cook in the sun. When you re-sole consider Vibram 430; you will not be regret it!
