Once witnessed a local shove several cars down a branch line uncoupled with a brakeman on point. The engines came to a stop allowing the cars to roll down the line. The engine crew threw the switch and the engines raced past the coasting cars on the siding. Once ahead, that switch was thrown, and the brakeman riding the lead hopper reached down to bleed the air from the brake line to stop the cars. Fascinating!

1:14 That man isn't the conductor. He's the engineer. He doesn't need a locomotive, because he is capable of moving the train using just the power of his mind. That's my theory, anyway.
@Hauketal3 жыл бұрын
Lol. I'm in Germany and trains run without conductor, engineer only. When shunting freight backwards, the engineer stands on the first car like in this video, but controls the locomotive by radio. There is a tilt sensor in the control unit, so whenever the engineer should become incapacitated, emergency brake is applied.
@SD40Fan_Jason3 жыл бұрын
Radio Controlled Operator, RCO. He didn't have the chestpack or he could have been doing that, not with the power of his mind but the power of his equipment. Typically RCOs can only operate in a yard or service facility that's fenced off and attempts to prohibit people from walking out in front of the engines. But the yellow beacons on the locomotive indicate the unit is equipped with RCO controls.

Most graffiti vandals steal their paint; it is called “racking.” Rust oleum is one of the most common graffiti paints-it is about $6-$7 a can, which holds about a pint. The box you asked about, might be for the emergency use, like if the signals fail, the rail staff can operate the crossing manually, or when they are doing maintenance work, I've seen it used for those purposes here in Australia, I used to live opposite a main rail line, and when there were accidents, or maintenance work, they would connect with the station up or down the line, to know when a train was coming, or in the event the signals were out of action, they used men to stop the traffic at the crossing. The phone connects to emergency services as well as rail authority.

That box "TELCO DEMARC" is an interface between that sat dish on the top and the railroad control Cresentville Road next, kind of like the modem your internet provider installs in your house to run your computer, phone etc.. Fiber is too expensive or just available in some settings and the old copper doesn't cut it to control everything from signals and switches to radio repeaters and security cameras. Many "outposts" have solar power with battery backup. CSX partners with Verizon mainly in Verizon operational area and others like Hughes. Many roads share this resource like regional commuter rail and Amtrak.

3:54: Telco Demarc is a Telephone Company Demarcation unit where wires from the local exchange are tied into those of a different telco.
@brucescott2403 жыл бұрын
“Telco Demarc” is the local telephone providers’ service demarcation point in side the cabinet. That is the service point where the “telco’s” network ends and its services are delivered to the subscriber (the railroad). Looks like a purdy fancy cabinet so I suspect it’s fiber optic demarc (pronounced “D” mark) but could be a four wire high capacity digital circuit on twisted pair copper phone cable or even 48 VDC POTs line (plain old telephone service).
@carmel64713 жыл бұрын
It started out POTS with only the busiest yards like Camden having half-dup. PTT capabilities if you can believe that but once train controls were introduced and implemented systemwide, and having to integrate with other systems(FEC, METRA, Etc.) I think almost all, if not all is likely now fiber optic.
@brucescott2403 жыл бұрын
@@carmel6471 POTs makes lots of sense as there may well be a landline in one of the signaling cabinets. We could guess better if we could see what kind of plant is adjacent to the crossing. F/O could well be present if the signaling system / network interfaces with the providers switched ethernet here.

Telco Demarc box The demarcation point varies from building type and service level. In its simplest form, the demarcation point is a junction block where telephone extensions join to connect to the network. This junction block usually includes a lightning arrester (which requires a wire to ground). In multi-line installations such as businesses or apartment buildings, the demarcation point may be a punch down block. In most places this hardware existed before deregulation.
