As a newly practising Catholic i see Reconciliation as a true blessing. It can be terrifying. But it is our minds that make it that way, we are telling our God through our priests our deepest and mortifying experiences. But when you walk out, you eventually realise, hey I actually told someone about something that has upset me or affected my life! I had to summarise 30 years in one session, and I was truly embarrassed crying and wanting to hide. But it was worth it. I was healed from this pain, and know that not only have I been given the wonderful opportunity to confess, but to be forgiven.

Today, I went to confession and spoke words to the priest, confessing something that I NEVERRR thought I would say aloud to another human being in my entire life. I knew I needed to confess it to be eternally saved. I prayed SOOO hard that the Holy Spirit would give me the courage. The ONLY reason I brought myself to the confession was bc I thought there would be anonymity. That was the only thing that made me feel safe enough to go. When I got there, there was no screen between us. I hid behind a large plant (lol!) 😂🤦and told the priest I needed anonymity. (thank God that large plant was positioned where it was!). He turned his chair around so his back would be toward my chair. So I walked in and sat down facing his back. I could NOT believe I was going to speak these words that I have been holding in for decades with NOTHING between me and him. I prayed again that the Holy Spirit would give me the courage bc I couldn't keep it in any longer. And I did it. He asked me to clarify, which I was praying he wouldn't. But I knew I HAD to in order to be absolved for eternity. So I did. I broke down crying. This priest was SOO wonderful. He didn't make me feel ashamed at all. I felt so blessed that I got through this. When I walked out of there, absolved of the sin (and my other sins) and shame I had been carrying for decades, I felt like a new person and I honestly felt like the angels were singing bc of this victory!!! I have never felt so relieved in my life. Praise God, Praise Jesus my Savior and thank You Holy Spirit for giving me TREMENDOUS courage that I needed today. I'm beyond grateful! 🙌🙏❤️

@@emmanuelsoto2476 Emmanuel, It is clear Catholic doctrine that the Church from the earliest times believed in the power to forgive sins as granted by Christ to the Apostles. Such a belief in fact was inculcated by the words with which Christ granted the power, and it would have been inexplicable to the early Christians if any one who professed faith in Christ had questioned the existence of that power in the Church. But if, on the contrary, we suppose that no such belief existed from the beginning, we encounter a still greater difficulty: the first mention of that power would have been regarded as an innovation both needless and intolerable; it would have shown little practical wisdom on the part of those who were endeavouring to draw men to Christ; and it would have raised a protest or led to a schism which would certainly have gone on record as plainly at least as did early divisions on matters of less importance. But NO such record is ever found; even those who sought to limit the power itself presupposed its existence, and their very attempt at limitation put them in opposition to the prevalent Catholic belief, as expressed by Paul: 2 Cor 5, 18-19 18. All this is from God, who through Christ RECONCILED us to himself and gave us the MINISTRY OF RECONCILIATION; 19. that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting TO US the message of RECONCILIATION. John 20:19-23 19. When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ 20. After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21. Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.’ 22. When he had said this, HE BREATHED ON THEM and said to them, ‘RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT. 23. If you FORGIVE THE SINS OF ANY, they are FORGIVEN them; if you RETAIN the sins of any, they are RETAINED.’ James 5:14-16 14. Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be FORGIVEN. 16. Therefore CONFESS YOUR SINS to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. The Church, since Apostolic times have not stopped exercising the ministry of Reconciliation, either in the West or in the East. May God bless your discernment.

This morning I saw this video and clicked on it and about 60 seconds later I felt something wash over me as if the Lord was saying “This is for you.” I was thinking earlier about how I don’t understand some things and heard in my head “Lean not on your own understanding but,...” Then I see this video. When I go to confession and I confess all of my mortal sins.... even the ones that I am extremely ashamed of... You know the ones that I am talking about... the sins that keep you up at night... the sins that you are so incredibly ashamed of that you have convinced your self that you are the only one in the world who has ever done this and that the priest has probably never heard it before... But then you confess it anyways... and for the priest it's just another day at the office. You leave the confessional refreshed and forgiven... and it is the greatest feeling on earth... God bless confession and God bless the priests that act as the person of Christ himself during confession!

Jack. You are doing well with your sincere and contrite confessions. You have probably noticed that the Priest (normally) does not make a distinction between hearing mortal and venial confessed sins. However, he will sometimes state that a confessed "fault" is not a sin at all. My main point is that mortal sin is committed only for very serious matter and is evaluated by the Priest to meet specific criteria. It is likely that most of your sins are venial in nature. And it is important to confess (even) these small sins to remain holy and prevent them from becoming major ones. Peace.

FR MIKE, I AM HANDICAPPED , THAT'S WHY EVERYTHING IS IN CAPITAL LETTERS. FR THE LAST TIME I WAS AT CONFESSION, IT WAS IN MY OWN HOME. IT WAS WITH A YOUNG PRIEST FROM OUR PARISH. HE HAD ONLY BEEN ORDAINED LESS THAN A YR. I LIVE IN A VERY SMALL HOUSE WITH A LARGE FAMILY. HE COULD TELL SOMETHING WAS BOTHERING ME. I TOLD HIM A SIN WAS CONSTANTLY BOTHERING ME BUT I WAS AFRAID OR FACE TO FACE CONFESSION BECAUSE I HAD A PRIEST, ONE TIME MANY YEARS AGO, SAY MY NAME IN THE CONFESSIONAL. SO FACE TO FACE WAS OUT OF THE QUESTION. HE SAID BASICALLY THE SAME THING YOU SAID. SO I CONFESSED THE SIN, BUT TO KEEP MY FAMILY FROM HEARING I HAD TO WHISPER IT IN HIS EAR. WHEN HE GAVE ME MY PENANCE, I STARTED CRYING. THAT WAS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL, RELEAVING. THE MOST PEACEFUL I HAVE EVER FELT AFTER CONFESSION. I CRIED LIKE A BABY. FATHER I WANT TO SAY I WISH I COULD MEET YOU SOMEDAY.EVERYTIME I'M FEELING DOWN THE LORD LEADS TO SOMETHING OR SOMEONE THAT HELPS ME. MORE TIMES THAN NOT, ITS TO YOU FATHER. I WISH I KNEW WHEN YOU MIGHT BE IN HARRISBURG , PENNSYLVANIA. I WOULD LOVE TO SEE YOU FATHER BEFORE I DIE. PLEASE LET OUR DIOCESE KNOW WHEN YOU MIGHT BE. YOU ARE TRULY A BLESSING FROM GOD FR MIKE. GOD BLESS YOU TODAY AND ALWAYS. WITH BLESSINGS AND PRAYERS CONNIE S.😇💗🙋🙏🙏🙏🙏

Crying like a baby here. Thank you father for sharing your point of view from the other side of the confessional. We live in Boston and are constantly upset about what certain clergy have done/are doing to children. Being faithful Catholics, I can't tell you how much it helps to be reminded of how beautiful God's Church is and how unbelievably Merciful He is. Thank you and all the truly faithful priests and clergy for your sacrifices and fasting you do for us sinful people. (Not sure if I'm making any sense right now... I'm just deeply touched by this and profoundly thankful to God for His gifts to us).

Yesterday, I went to confession after many many years. I was so nervous for it was the first time I would tell another human being about my sins. When the priest pronounced I forgive you, I wept and sobbed. Finally, I'm free from the sins that ruled my life for many years, since my youth (I'm now 40). Thank you for the gift of reconciliation, Lord, and for never giving up on me all these years. You relentlessly pursued me and called me back every time. Your love and mercy renew every morning. I will do my best, with your grace, to live my life away from sins and do your will every day of my life.

I went to confession today, and it was not my usual experience. First, this was at a familiar church, but not my own parish. A priest whom I hadn’t met before came out and discouraged people from coming to confession if they had been in the past week, or if it was for a habitual sin. (I stayed, anyway.) When I went in, it was like I was in a “confession machine.” He didn’t want to know any details; it was a “just the facts, ma’am” scenario. I spoke very little, and got flustered so I shut up because I couldn’t think of anything else. I felt like it was a fast-food line, and it was my job to just give my laundry list. I thought he was just in a hurry, but then, he started talking about what he thought my situation was, and saying all kinds of things that would have sounded silly if he was considering my actual situation. He went on and on. I happened to look up at a portrait hanging on the wall. It was St. Maria Goretti, with her eyes raised to Heaven., as though she were saying, “I feel you, girl!” Then he gave me a HUGE penance that included the words, “Every morning,” without an end date. After confession, I usually feel that I’ve poured my heart out to my loving Father, and I am forgiven and welcomed home. This time, I felt like the priest was a civil servant meting out prison sentences. I just want to encourage people: if you meet with a bad situation in confession, don’t give up! Find a loving confessor, and follow his direction.

When I was in my late teens, I went to confession. I felt so humiliated during that confession by the priest I was confessing to, I lost faith in the church, and lost faith in going to confession. I have gone back to the Catholic Church many times since then, and to many other churches to see where I feel most comfortable, but still feel that somehow, some way, the Catholic Church is my home. I pray to Jesus every day to express my love and for forgiveness of my sins. I read the mass readings daily. I watch mass online right now, as I search for the place I will feel most comfortable and accepted for who I am. Thank you for this video Father Mike. One day I will meet a priest like you, and know I have truly come home where I belong...........

I go to confession regularly, but this time is different. I am a sinner! I feel embarrassed and shameful for my life 10 years ago. I have not been able to move forward because of this old baggage, however I am not that same person of my past. The Holy Spirit inspired me to go to Private confession. "Confession Is A Place of Victory" video has lifted my spirits this morning and removed so much of my fear. For me, confession is a gift from God and I look forward to it with thoughts of gratitude. GREAT VIDEO! Thanks, Fr Mike

I read yesterday about how we we spend so much time looking on the internet for places like restaurants and hair appointments, but we don't take the same amount of time to do so for confessions. I do agree it needs to be more available. The only ones around me are scheduled Saturdays. In the past, I've driven to Church and knocked on the priests door and he heard my confession. Try doing a little internet search (if you haven't already). And then try talking to your parish priest about offering it more regularly. And have a great day :)
