Confidence And Searching Fly Patterns For Fly Fishing

When you are searching for fish just keep it simple! I only use one or two streamers while fly fishing new waters. These patterns have proven themselves in all the fisheries I have been and am sure they will work for you too.

What weight of rod for this big flys. 7,8 and up.

I use 6wt for the trout flies(the bigger trout ones). I use an 8wt for the pike/bass flies. Carp I use both 6-8wt depending on how big the carp are.

When I fish for tout, my streamers are size 16. Sometimes, I up a size and use 14. For bass, I use size 12. My streamers take literally 2 minutes to tie. If it is not a lake or very calm water, I do not use streamers to search for trout. I use a single size 16 stonefly nymph and swing it. If the trout are not rising, i.e. there is no other obvious food source that they are interested in, they will not reject a stonefly.

For most flies I do. Sometimes the pike flies, I use a snap tied onto the leader for quicker changes. 99% Of the time i use a non-slip mono loop.
