The Host computer(the one you want to connect "to" must be running win 7 Professional, Enterprise or Ultimate. Same with Vista and XP. That is why you don't see the other portion of that window. The Client computer(the one you use to connect "from") can be running any version of those OS's. Also, on the Host side, you have to make sure that your firewall and router settings are correct. You can search google for these settings. Would be nice if it were as easy as illustrated here!

This does not work on Windows 7 Home Premium, the version most commonly bundled with laptops. Remote Desktop Server is only available on Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate, and Enterprise.

Yes it does. Click Start button, in command line type (don't hit enter): "remote". You'll see Remote "Desktop Connection" first in the list.

In the same local network. But 'overseas' a VPN is needed. For local and remote access there are third party, crossplatform, free apps. So, no matter if you run Windows, Linux or Mac you can control computers remotely without the need of configuring a VPN. Good tutorial, though.

This is a solution to communicate between 2 pcs in the same network, i mean intranet. If you try to make an internet connection from a pc A that belongs to the network A with dynamic ip to a pc B that belongs to the network B with static ip, with the remote desktop application (any windows version) you cannot establish connection between the two pcs via internet! That is a job for TeamViewer for example!

The videos on this subject never go into what needs to be done to fix that. The number of reasons you might have a problem with connecting from an external network are staggering: firewall, antivirus, gateway settings, etc... These videos exist primarily to generate ad revenue.

Go to Command Prompt, if you don't know how to do that, press windowskey+r and type "cmd". Then type ipconfig /all. Go to the very top and look for the Host Name and the Primary DNS Suffix, and that's what you need. The Host Name followed by the Primary DNS Suffix. So for example, if the Host Name is "Username-PC" and the DNS Suffix is "asdf.nl.k", it would be "Username-PC.asdf.nl.k". If not, it would be "Username-PC.(IP address here)". Type ipconfig in cmd, and look for IPv4 for the IP address.

Great guide thank you (liked and subscribed). I have got this setup now, but a question I have is will software (mainly a torrent program, and media streaming) continue to run while the server PC user is logged out. Let me explain my situation. SERVER computer is running utorrent and downloading, I connect remotely (at which point the user is logged out on the SERVER end) and add a few new torrents. I then disconnect my CLIENT from the server (at which point the original user on the SERVER remains logged out). Will the torrents continue downloading in the background. (same applies for my media streaming). Thanks in advance :)

Was very confusing in the start when it's asking for a name.. Literally spend 2 hours on that, fucking Microsoft.
@TheLeader32110 жыл бұрын
mollebjornen Microsoft isn't that bad i suppose. But windows was an epic fail in any case. It's a shame most stuff is only compatible with windows and not linux.
@Xipingu10 жыл бұрын
The thing with them is that everything is explained terribly. I would say I've got a good enough way of understanding things, but even I fall flat on my arse when I try to understand what Microsoft's programs want sometimes, for example when it asks for a server name and wants the IP. Who on Earth would know that if it isn't explained to you? Because it isn't, had to get help from a forum not part of the Microsoft company to understand what it meant. And yeah, really a shame. Linux is making it's way forward now, however, if you haven't noticed.
@TheLeader32110 жыл бұрын
mollebjornen Yeah i notices Linux's success. And about Windows, on top of not being explained well, you can hardly do anything with it. I mean it's YOUR computer but you can't, for example, delete stuff thats "in use by another program". In linux, you just open the terminal, delete the file while ignoring anything else and then if the program the file is open with crashes, then yes, it's your fault, but a least your free to do what you want with your computer.
@Xipingu10 жыл бұрын
TheLeader321 Exactly! Have had this discussion before with my teacher and even customers where I work. Windows is just.. While it does give access to where the most work are put into at the moment in regards to updates and gaming relation (tried gaming on Linux, works fine but there is not nearly enough games and it is also still a little buggy sometimes), it is not even close to be a perfect, or even a good system. Well good can be argued, but I don't really think so when the system tells you what you can't do and what you can do. So yeah, I agree.
