Euhm Linus, you said that Windows 8 does not come with Remote Desktop and you need to download their app for it, however i am using the latest version of Windows and i can just search in my apps for remote and it'll show up without installing any app. Have used it and it works. I use VNC, Remote Desktop and Team Viewer.

LINUS YOU ARE THE MAN!! I'm currently typing this on my Nexus 5X with TeamViewer connected to my PC in the other room, i have tried multiple times to use the Remote Desktop app from Windows but it does not give anything but error codes and no explanation as to why it just doesn't want to work. so i don't even know how the app works. Sure enough TeamViewer works as easy as you say. Downloaded on both devices and created an account within minutes, now i can watch my various long file transfers and processes from my bed without having to get up in the middle of the night! TECH FTW AGAIN! Thanks buddy

I am a technician and an enthusiast, I have used teamviewer for years. It's not only very strait forward with use and installation, but it is also free and comes with nearly all features. Additionally it can be configured pretty much anyway you like, from VPN, file transfers, advanced security, permissions and so on. You can even use the built in chat and audio and video. It is by far one of if not the best remote desktop software. Again, it is very easy to install and use, it can be configured with advanced settings as well for the know hows. Teamviewer also has different clients, even ones downloadable without an install required, so you can connect to a desktop simply by opening a file. I have configured a shortcut on my desktop to instantly connect with the ID and Password parameters in the shortcut for instant access.

I have used them all, Windows Remote Desktop stands out both in terms of difficulty setting up and quality. It's a pain to set up and requires you to forward ports and know the remote IP... It's also only on Pro versions but when the connection is quick enough, it's so good you don't feel AT ALL like you're on another computer. Also, I believe the remote desktop app is included in Windows 8 by default...

One of the Remote's i use is "Remote Controll Collection". It is a really nice, fast, easy and free app for android (i'm not sure about iOS). It has a lot of cool features, and it's also pretty fast, though you can buy the Pro Version which has more features such as Live Screen which shows your computer's screen directly on your Phone. The downside is that you can only connect to a computer that is connected on the same network, so you're not going to be able to connect if you're away from home and not in the same network.

TeamViewer is excellent EXCEPT if the app thinks you are using it for commercial purposes, then it will lock you out until you send a log of your connections and they determine if you are or are not using it for commercial purposes. I used it to monitor home cameras and on more than 1 occasion I've had to prove it's not commercial

Mostly i prefer to use windows RDP sessions, mainly because it locks the local screen so nobody can see what you're doing if they happen to be in front of your PC, VNC is pretty good if i need to set up stuff that the user might need to see me use so they can use it themselves later

I started back in the old days with .... which was a dial in solution for dos :) Later and for many years I then used Norton (later symantec) pcAnywhere. Finally I bumped into VNC. I use TightVNC which is free and light and superfast. My always distrusting big companies brain also likes VNC becasue it does not run through third parties. It uses direct pc to pc or Ipad to pc connections which require being able to forward ports. I am gonna try teamviewer again as I have to be able to acces a computer of which I have no control of the connected (port forward) router. But in my experience teamviewer is way to extended with all kinds of , to me, useless extra's so my favourite stays VNC. I think VNC is the best solution to remotely control your own other pc's in a local network or via internet.

Teamviewer free is great for home use, especially for thoes who don't know how to configure port forwarding or understand the remote desktop system. It is also king for supporting large bodies of customers at an enterprise level but the cost is quite heavy. Despite this cost I still beleive it is justified if you can afford it.

I'm using remote desktop controllers for 2 years. Gmote for accessing files on my phone, and to watch movies in my bed :P. Not a real desktop controller but very useful I greatly recommend it, it's on Android. Splashtop worked great for me and still using it. Splashtop because with my 22 Mbps connection it doesn't lag a bit although it is payed for the "access anywhere" pack it is free for a local network and people with a bit of networking knowhow can set up a VLAN so that they can fool it but that's like piracy I wouldn't advice it... IMHO the in depth touchscreen support and the compression protocols of splashtop make it one of the best. Same though they don't have a robust windows to windows client.
