I have been managing Cisco and HP switches for years. When I bought UniFi for home, I went with a Netgate appliance for routing, which still looks mostly 'normal' in the VLAN config. But when I got to UniFi, I was totally confused. This video was spot on, and like others, gave me that 'aha' moment!! This was worth the price of admission!

Same. Unifi made me feel like I was a networking newb. Ironic, cause like you, I also have been managing enterprise networks and a variety of vendors for several years, and I'm used to the "normal" way and look of things.

I've just been having dramas setting up a pfSense SG1100 to a Ubi Toughswitch (now called Edgeswitch) with 3 UAP-AC-LRs... There are 2 Lan VLAN interfaces and 3 WAN VLAN interfaces. Everything works fine except 1 of the LAN VLAN interfaces isn't parsing DHCP requested on wifi, but it is all fine when connected on Ethernet. I will be taking another look at the issue in a few days when I'm back at the clients place.

helpful video - I started using unify switches as we inherited a bunch of them through an acquisition of another company. Really unify, I'm not certain this is not wrong... design. It works with 2-3 vlans, but becomes unmanageable slow and complex when dealing with 10 or more vlans and varying network layouts. There are way more simpler approches.

I have a scenario with Zyxel router and unifi us-16-150 switch and need to create a vlan? Is it achievable please? And how is it done?
@andrewhelton61193 жыл бұрын
Something I'm confused about having done Cisco switches with the whole "switchport access vlan 10" thing - am I not specifying that that port should be tagged with vlan 10? So when a datagram arrives at that port on a Cisco switch, that datagram is tagged with vlan 10? Or does that tagging only take place when the datagram is passing over a trunk as in a router-on-a-stick scenario or between switches? The reason I ask is because, like you mention in your video, Unifi auto-generates switchport profiles for configured networks and these auto-generate profiles are untagged. If I choose one of those auto-generated profiles, will my Unifi traffic still be tagged appropriately when traversing a trunk? Does untagged just mean "access port"?
@michaelsasso134 жыл бұрын
This video explains a lot. After learning Cisco now I see why I’m confused. Do you have another video that shows the VLAN setup needed between an EdgeRouter and the UniFi switch to make it all work? The ER is handling the DHCP addresses, so do you match the settings on the UniFi switch with the ER and create a trunk port between them?

Great video however I am just getting hung up on a Wireless Access Point. Did everything you said: set up wireless network for vlan 30 then wireless network profile and applied it all to the router, switch and port for wap. Worked for a few minutes (and horribly slow connection speed at that) and then lost heartbeat and then connection with wap. Finally switched to an unconfigured port and everything worked. Is there something with wireless in Unifi that I'm missing? First Ubiquiti anything for me and I just got my CCNA, I think I have wrapped my head around the differences but......maybe not. Any sit specific for setting up WAP's? Thanks for your time.Much appreciated!!!

Good video. I want to setup some vlans myself. I have a sticky wicket though. I’m using a Cisco SV260W router that I’m running a Web server with a static address of 192.168.123.104. I have some ports like 8088 and 8083 forwarded to that address in the router. So I want VLANs for IoT, my main house network use, guest access. How would I set that up?

Hi Jeremy, thanks for the video! You're adding great content to YT. I would like you to add a Video on How to do Firewall/Routing Configuration, especially with VLANs. Because Ubiquiti does it also different in this case. I'm thinking about VLAN isolation. I'm also trying to find a way to do some QoS on VPN-Connections and Voice since I'm pinned down at my HomeOffice with 16 MBit/s Up and 2.4 MBit/s down here in poor non-fibre Germany.

Just got a UDM pro for the house and im sad to learn I cant do OSPF, as I like advertising my networks northbound to have more control via ACL's on my LAN switch (C3650x). So now that I cant do that I was going nuts trying to figure out how to create a trunk and let the UDM Pro do all the work (plan B I guess..) Ugh.. Still wish I could do it my way but plan B will open up more features witht he controller. Just hate that I cant lock my cameras down by IP with an ACL from leaving the SVI.. maybe theres a way to do it in Unifi..? Guess I'll keep on searching.. Thanks for this tho!! Wish I could just webex with someone for a few min to go over my design instead of trying to piece this together with google..

Your videos are always very helpful and thorough. I have a question that you may be able to help me with. We have 49 UAP's that we need to split up into two groups because of performance issues. Here's my question . . . I am moving 30 of the AP's over to a new UCK Gen2+ and I am wondering how to incorporate the VLAN only option, since that is what I've been told would be the best way to approach this. I have moved four over for testing purposes and they are working great, but I haven't established the VLAN only setting on the new UCK. Is that something I need to do, and if so, can you give me direction on how to approach it? Thanks

Jeremy, great explanation. What if you need to create a WAN based profile which include two VLAN's? For instance, I have an internet connection which provides internet and IPTV over the same WAN port. The internet connection is provided by untagged VLAN 6, and IPTV over VLAN 3. It seems you cannot create a port profile to include the WAN network.

Keeping IT Simple lol then why does it show ALL in switch profile in every UniFi switch port. I assume ALL means trunk port with one native vlan or untagged vlan. So in Cisco, it is port mode trunk, which basically allow all vlans and setup native vlan.
