What does a Spent Unit signify?: Men in combat constantly face the fight or flight syndrome. Bullets are flying, wounded men are screaming in pain, there is smoke, conflicting orders, and chaos. In general, men do not keep advancing towards opponents when bullets are flying. They hit the ground and don't even want to stick their head over cover to fire. This is why in CoH fresh units can become spent. Spent units can still take further actions, but no longer on their own initiative. Fresh Units are in a state where they are still taking actions and following Mission Objective orders on their own initiative. Spent Units are pausing and will not take further actions under their own volition until the next round, unless prompted through command. You get these spent units to execute actions by spending your scarce Command Points or playing Battle Cards. These represent you, as the commander, sending an NCO to your flank position to slap the men's helmets while yell at them to move their sorry asses, or making sure that sufficient ammo is reaching a HMG position, or you talking a squad or platoon leader out of the cognitive suppression rabbit hole they are sinking into and getting them thinking again to motivate their own troops back into action. Your CAPs and FoW Battle Cards represent your command's officers and NCOs, logistics, and communications resources. :) Have fun with the third edition. We have put a lot of effort into it to further simulate the obstacles and uncertainties a leader faces in battle.

Just wanted to say I appreciate the extra explanation of spent units. Changing a player's mindset from one of, "I'm rolling a die to get this number" to "I'm sending my commander in to kick some butt and motivate the squad" really helps with the immersion, and ultimately, the enjoyment of the game. Keep up the great work!

These are plastic cards Gimpy! They are a bit thinner than our paper cards, but they cannot tear and are 100% water proof! When you shuffle, they also snap straight. So we paid more money for the plastic. Let me know after playing with them, since this is the first game we are testing these on. We did not try plastic with SoS3, only with AtB3. :)

Sounds good. I want to give them a few more plays before I make a final call, but being waterproof is nice to know since accidents do happen.

Thanks for these videos Gimpy! I got Sherman Leader off the back of your other vids and thought this looked a step up! Intimidated? Yes!! There’s a lot to take in but these vids will be a massive help...wish me luck!

I am right there with you Craig! I want to pick up Sherman leader, when it’s available lol. I am also becoming very drawn to COH, but also a little intimidated too (rookie wargamer). Did you ever pick up CoH? ed? solo? thoughts on it?

Great Video Gimp,I have AtB also and as a solo player,I have been plaing both sides but I do have the solo expansion so am looking forward to your gameplay.

One concern to be aware of regarding play with the solo expansion and spent checks. If you use the spent check die instead of using the solo deck for spent checks, this means that the A.I. potentially can have more command cards come into play. Whereas if you use the solo deck for spent checks, it's possible that some of those command cards might end up out of play for the A.I. when pulling cards for spent checks.

One problem I have with the defensive numbers is that they seem backward. The forward arc number should be on top (representing the forward arc) and the flank should be on the bottom (representing the rear of the target). It's counterintuitive the way it's set up now.

6:00 I believe the cards are plastic so they won't tear and are probably the most durable cards out there.

This is quite simply one of the best designs in a tactical game ever and I've been playing war games since the the late seventies. 3rd editions simply brilliant... waiting for updated/3rd edition Guadacanal & Honor

I've played five games of the "Storms of Steel" 3rd edition since I got it, and I'm loving the spent die. Be prepared to curse your rolls, though. Really looking forward to your review-through, and I hope you can play it all the way through.

The solitaire game was the first 3rd Ed style of game play used. By drawing the cards for spent checks, you cannot have long black swan runs that rolling dice may sometimes give you. If you do use the dice for the AI, then they should also have one or two Command cards added to their draw deck. :)
@thegimpygamer5 жыл бұрын
Oh that's good to know. I might give that a try the next time I play to see how it effects the game.

Please do a comparison of the ATB and SOS cards. Even so they both 3rd Ed they differ in cardstock. I love the game but hate the cardstock issues.

Polish one is either "Price of Honor" or "The Price of Honor" or, maybe, 'Honour.' I have second edition, which can be also played with the new rules set. Good stuff.

Hi Gimpy, do you know what level elevation does smoke go up to? I had a mission with a friends mortar on a steep hill over looking the valley, between his mortar and my rifles we had smoke on the table, if we where both on same level we couldn’t se each other thru heavy smoke but since he is in elevation does that change? Thank for all the awesome content
@thegimpygamer4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately it varies between different games systems. In COH it is considered forever. In other words it blocks LOS from all elevations.

@@thegimpygamer thanks for the reply, I have one more question regarding move and pivot. A unit first move into a hex and then pivot any direction, If a unit is moving into an enemy hex for close combat can it pivot after it enters the hex? or does it enter without the ability to pivot due to the enemy in the hex? Thanks again
