Today's guest is the iconic musician from the Blues Magoos, Peppy Castro. Peppy shares a long-standing friendship with Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley. Initially, Peppy collaborated with Ace on the recent album "10,000 Volts." However, due to unforeseen circumstances, Steve Brown from Trixter took over the production, and as a result, Peppy was no longer part of the project.
Join us as Peppy Castro breaks his silence, expressing his thoughts and feelings about Brown's comments for the first time.

I don't blame Peppy for being pissed. That Brown guy rubbed me the wrong way when I saw that interview a week ago. It was so annoying I clicked off it after 30 seconds.

Steve Brown got caught up in the hype but he was also throwing Ace under the bus by saying he wrote and played on most of the album. This is someone who does 80s cover songs for a living and occasional Trixter gigs and he’s hyping himself like he’s the next Mutt Lange 😂. Ace responded with saying Brown was tooting his own horn a little too much. This was like Nikki Sixx calling Carmine Appice a washed up drummer. There was one other childhood friend Ace worked with on one of his solo albums a few years back, Larry Russell, but I don’t think they wrote together.

I hadn't read that Ace said Brown was high on his own gas. I get it. I'm a huge fan of Ace. Like so many others, I play Les Paul's and strap low and knock kneed and pigeon 10:42 the guy's solos were so slinky and cool to me as a kid. Had I produced his record, I'd be proud to just survive the day and not be a fan boy. That said, I would wouldn't be dissing the star of my new play by trying to insinuate the record was more me than him. That's business sense. Trixter, sold what? Is playing where? Has rotation on what station. Kiss, and Ace sold what? Are in rotation on Ozzy's Boneyard, Classic Rewind, Hair Nation, etc. So, business edicts promoting this as Ace's baby. Not yours featuring Ace. Your business as a producer requires you to take the role as such. Bob Rock doesn't say before me Motley Crue and Metallica, were lazy etc. Eddie Kramer didn't say before me Hendrix played out of tune. Mutt Lange doesn't say listen to "On Through the Noght and High n' Dry, see Def Leppard was nothing without me. They all said I wanted to focus on these aspects and strengths this artist has, and spotlight them. And people anyone of us that writers a 3 minute miracle would love to work with one of those guys. Steve Brown was in Trixter. Played some bigger stages than me. Blamed Grunge for his downfall, and clearly lacks depth.

As to the music, we can't make a final judgement, since we havent heard this masterpiece called, "Venus with a Whip" lol (stupid song title)... BUT, we HAVE heard an entire record by Steve and Ace which kills! Steve sewed Ace back together, like Dr. Frankenstein. Raised him from the dead, like Lazarus. Did Steve get full of himself and need to be yanked back into line? Ya. I think he did, BUT, it was probably that same drive and ego that drove him to create one of the best rock releases many of us have heard in a good while.... Peppy, on the other hand, has one unreleased tune he keeps referring to; "Venus the Flytrap", or, whatever it was. For my money, I'll stick with Steve Btown. I mean, look, it's Ace. What does that mean? It means ANY collaboration he takes part in is going to be a trainwreck. Because ACE is a trainwreck! Even more reason to give Steve props. Trust me, Steve put up with a TON of bullshit putting this record together, and he will do it again for the forthcoming Origins 3 record and then "11,000 Volts" lol.

I agree on the Steve Brown ego tripping thing. He definitely comes off as headline seeking, look at me, I am the reason and savior dude. I kind of think he or the guitar player in Ace's band played rhythm guitar onnthe record. The tone is different, and the playing is tighter than the solos. I loved 10,000 volts, and Ace is doing his job pimping the new record as his best since 78. But it's not. It's a rehash of what we want from Ace. 78 was groundbreaking. Very innovative. This record is very shallow. Like Trixter, the songs , in the end, are irrelevant. The only thing I give Steve Brown, is he is correct. This is the best KISS related record since Revenge. Peppy Castro, I appreciate you. I've been in this business to local success, eventhough like Steve Brown , I thought I was destined for more. But unlike Steve Brown, I know my poo poo stinks.

10,000 Volts is a great album. In no way does that make it OK to diss Castro. Ace has many times over the years talked about what a talent he is and how much he influenced and inspired him and contributed to Ace's career. I 100% think Mr. Castro has done the right thing to speak up and set the record straight. Ace has done lots of great records before 10,000 Volts. The success of the current album doesn't change that. I prefer to hear Ace records where Ace plays all the guitars.

Sounds to me like Ace should kick Steve Brown to the curb, I mean he was in a band that had one slight hit 30 years ago, Ace was in the Hottest band in the world!!! I remember Trixter, they kinda came along when hair metal was dying out. There was nothing spectacular about them, but it makes me laugh as I too met a guitarist just this last year and I was going to work with him. I'd seen him play some Van Halen and was impressed. First thing this guy did was put down my influences then started tearing apart songs I'd recorded, telling me they were mediocre at best, that all lyrics needed to be re-written. He couldn't even play one of my easier guitar solo's I told him to take a hike. Biggest ego I'd ever seen, yet he lives with his Mom, doesn't have a job and nobody knows who he is. I've met so many guitar players that think they are God's gift to the guitar, and I've never seen them out there making it.

The opening of Blues Magoos' 'We Ain't Got Nothing Yet' is very similar to Deep Purple's 'Black Night' and Ricky Nelson's bassline in his arrangement of George Gershwin's 'Summertime'. Nothing wrong with that, just another example of "stealing" or "loaning" musical ideas from other artists.

10000 volts is really too polished. First time I heard "Spaceman"; to me it sounded like a demo. When a take is done you can choose to keep the track, do one more take or use autotune/ synchronise. Listen to Slash latest production and hold it up against Ace's. Slash and the band play live during recording and do overdubs afterwards. I love Ace, but he turned 70 and maybe need to hook up with people who knows him. That Steve guy is so full of himself.
