@EMB123 hahahahaha -- that’s so funny! As a 76 year old, I am perfectly satisfied with just pleasing our Lord. I was in Adoration chapel decades ago when I heard a distinct voice say “Would you wear the veil?”. I said in my mind Of Course and immediately went home to research why I was asked to wear the veil. I was led to read the 2nd Vatican council documents, and was shocked at how many changes had occurred, including the veil, that were not sanctioned by the council.

Spirituality and religiosity is accepted in Japan. It would flourish more without the Novus Ordo because of how doctrinally watered down it is, but they've survived without any sacraments for hundreds of years, so they can survive anything.

First time I attended a TLM in jeans and crew tee as a woke adult, I felt great shame for not being veiled. And that shame intensified at the rail while receiving the Eucharist. And I immediately realised how important it was to be veiled and dress appropriately as a woman before God. My general dressing and appearance has since changed from that day. Deo Gratias

I dress fairly “trendy” outside of church but Mass, when in the House of God and the altar rail I take even more care. People mistake the “rules” of being “fancy” versus being modest. It is also good to embrace your femininity and masculinity. And it is so sad. That is not the requirement at all. People also act like we think women are supposed to be stupid and my family never discouraged me from learning or working. I am taking a break from school and work at the moment for my young children because thank God my husband can afford it right now. But I have a lot of my own ambitions as well.

I first wore a veil back in 2006, before the tradition started coming back. Being only 20 years old, I was the youngest person going to daily Mass, wearing the veil, and I got a lot of looks from the older crowd and criticism from my family. The pressure eventually become too stressful, so I stopped wearing the veil. Back in 2017, I felt the Holy Spirit moving me to start veiling again, but I had a lot to overcome before I could bring myself to wear it. Finally, this year, my mom (one of the people who criticized me for veiling) bought me a brand new veil! It took me about a month, but I have FINALLY started wearing the veil again and I am at peace with it.

For those who want to cover their heads, but deal with anxiety over it, there are options. The Church doesn't say it HAS to be a traditional lace veil. I currently use wide headbands. Hats are acceptable as well. I use scarves as well. It doesn't have to be a black or white veil. Someone in the comments here mentioned wearing a veil that matches her hair color so she doesn't feel like she stands out. I've also found that there are many women who want to veil but don't want to be the only one. All it takes is one brave woman to veil at Mass regularly and the others start to feel comfortable enough to express their convictions, too.

I did it in my town which is a really small village in northern Spain. No one wore it, just me. I got stares from old women but my family was supportive. My grandma even asked me if I could get one for her, she used to veil when she was younger during the 40's and 50's, so it brought her memories and she loved that I adopted it. But I felt like other people were judging on me, either shocked, surprised or just unsure why I did that being younger than them. Whatever the reaction is I'm still doing it and now I'm kinda starting to think about wearing it on a daily basis on a more casual and not obvious way. Way to go, you shouldn't care what others think about it. It's always tough to be the first one, but they eventually start to follow you.

Funny story, I used to have a dark gray wool dress that I would wear to Mass in wintertime. I would pair it with a black veil and people would stare at me. I wondered why and realized I looked like a postulant! I've seen all sorts of dress at Mass, but the one, I think, that takes the cake was an older woman (50s, early 60s in age) who would regularly do the readings and be a Eucharistic Minister, wore a miniskirt with thigh high boots to Mass. Now THAT was distracting! It looked totally out of place next to the priest in his vestments.

I think it's more mental. You think they're looking at you differently and they're not. I sit back and see both veiled and non veiled just doing their part. I admire veiled women at mass. Literally every depiction of the Blessed Mary is of her being veiled, and every woman was throughout church history until 5 minutes ago.

I converted to Catholicism from a Hindu faith. I was actually in a convent when I read about the saints. Whenever we went into meditation time and prayers most of us wore a shawl of some kind over our heads. In that tradition, it is called a chadhar. It felt very much like you were giving yourself some privacy from the eyes of others so that you could concentrate on your prayers and your meditation much easier, so I am rather in favor of veiling now that I am Catholic. I have never seen anyone veiled in any of the parishes I have attended in the town where I live, but now that I am disabled and mostly homebound, I veil when I meditate at home. It isn't about what other people think. It is about what God thinks.

You can't just 'mimic modesty', it has to come deeply from the heart, otherwise it's like putting an external mask. Veils are indeed beautiful, but they shouldn't be viewed as external accessories, but rather wearing them should come out of the purity and modesty deeply in the heart.

Agree with Claustelmach - if you don’t initially feel the reverence coming from within your heart, go with the actions and traditions and the feeling will come. Like CS Lewis suggests, if you don’t initially feel the LOVE for God with your whole heart, as Jesus asks us to, act as if you do…. These things lead us to God.

@@joane24The way we pray is the way we believe. Discouraging women to veil only because they don't yet share your will to be humble sounds dangerously like discouraging servile fear where filial fear hasn't yet developed. It also puts you in danger of self-righteousness, which is pride, which is contrary to your assertion. I want to see women covering their heads in public again, and that's not going to happen if we're bullying them for even covering their heads in mass.

I've been going through a rough time healing and letting go. I've been attending a TLM since 2019 and I've veiled since then. Recently I've been struggling with my faith and have been very angry at God that I stopped veiling. I wanted to rebel and stop covering my hair as a form of un-submission. This led me to stop praying, stop receiving communion, and overall pushing God away. People at my parish started to question why I stopped. They knew something was wrong. I have a lovely community that loves me and encourages me. I had several women talk to me, pray for me and encourage me to continue seeking God. One lady reminded me how beautiful it was to veil. She sent me articles and bible verses to encourage and remind me that I am a precious child of God. I had forgotten how precious we are and how God calls us to be sacred and modest. This touched me and helped me realized how special I am. I started veiling again thanks to the women who inspire me and encourage me to give God glory through my submission.

I'm Byzantine Catholic and never veiled. I'm in my early 40s so I wasn't raised with it. I do remember a few of the women that my grandmother was friends with in the parish doing it. I had been thinking about it and came across a Instagram page of a young Catholic mother that embroiders veils. She created one with Saint Joan embroidered on the back (it's a black veil with gold lace and gold embroidery) and I purchased it. I got it in the mail today and put it on in front of my mother. When she was younger, she would have to wear something on her head for Mass, even if it was a bobby pinned napkin, as she was in Catholic school. After seeing the veil today, I think she may be purchasing one of her own now.

"You veil things that are holy." That's why I've always loved veils/nuns so much!! ❤ The precious deserves protecting. Veils are ironically very "pretty" if that makes sense. The world says to expose expose expose, with no shame or humbleness at all, and it gets very garish and repulsive. But chastity and modesty is so lovely in an inner beauty kind of way. The ability to say "no" simply and reservedly is such a wonderful, nobly-enticing thing that all the skin in the world could never hope to achieve.

My mom and her sisters were going through my grandma's house after she died. They were throwing things into the middle of the living room floor they wanted to throw away. I was going through it seeing if I wanted anything. I found a box with several of her embroidered handkerchiefs and chapel veils. I took them and started using the veils at home while praying and reading the Scripture. I didn't have the courage to attend my NO mass while wearing one, though. However, I recently started going to TLM weekly and am wearing them. Wearing one reminds me of my humility before the Lord, but it, also, makes me feel closer to my grandma since I know she wore them when she was my age.

As a child in Catholic School we had Mass every day in the gym and I wore a black veil. From first grade through 4th grade. The past 10 years I so wanted to return to wearing my black veil for the reason of humility and in honor of Jesus present in the Holy Eucharist. But also because sometimes I become teary at the beauty of what is going on during mass, and I always wish I could hide so people would not watch me cry. The veil gives me a bit more privacy in that respect, yet I have had a few reprimanding looks from parishioners. This is just what my heart calls me to do. There is one other family with 13 children who are their veils and that gave me the extra confidence I needed to go out and purchase one.

I know because I was in on the ground floor of the whole feminist movement in the 70s. I've had nothing but compliments since I started veiling over a year ago in my NO parish, but then most of them are from the days when veiling was mandatory. Years ago,I began to have visions of myself at the foot of the cross always wearing a veil. I didn't understand but always felt this beautiful feeling come over me. I felt so close to Him. I must admit it took a long time for me to be obedient to what I felt I was being called to by Our Heavenly Father. Only certain much older European women in our parish wore them. When one of the last of these woman passed away, I said OK Lord I will do this. Please help me to be strong and withstand what may come my way. Oh yes I got stares and questions as I now was the only one veiling. Years later, young woman and girls are starting to also. Asking their parents for one. Every time I find myself moved to tears and I rejoice, praying that the numbers increase. What a beautiful and humbling way to show your love for Him. At first hesitant, now I am joyfully thankful for another way to show my love for Our Lord. Blessings to you both +JMJ pray for us.

Thank you for this, I have started wearing a veil recently and it was difficult for me because I felt like I actually stood out. Not that I blended in. There were only a few other women at Mass wearing a veil and I didn't know all the history and rules. So I was also wondering what color to wear and all that. I ended up with a light pink one and a white one. Which I guess is wrong because I am married. Anyway, I had to talk to the priest about it because I felt like I was standing out and trying to look more pious than other people but he said you should never worry about stuff like that. Don't get caught up in the colors and expectations of style or anything like that. A woman should wear a veil if it is something in her heart that says she should because she is before the Lord. Or as a witness that He is truly in the tabernacle. A simple veil should not be too ornate, too glittery, too showy so that all the women are looking at it and admiring it instead of being focused on God. Black, Gray, Navy. Keep it simple because Jesus was simple in all He did.

@@triciagarea9576 it really should be a personal choice. One is not better than the other. I received a few comments but I just smiled I wasn't going to justify why I'm covering if you don't have the decency to ask and I was not going to be nasty either. Now everyone settled down, they are used to see me with my head covered. I really do see more women... not lots but definitely more women covering their heads. We only have one Sspx in Cape Town, so we are not spoilt for choice when it comes to tlm Mass's. We only have NO but we can't complain as the priests are quite reverent. I have had people complament on the Vail and more than a few dirty looks by Suesan's (even saved by a fellow veteran and K of C when I went by my self and a gaggle of Suesan's tried to come up and say something about my vail). I have them in the basic colors and liturgical colors. I'm always self conscious about my most beautiful Vail I made for feast day as I feel like I stick out even more with this Red vail on but ironically young women have seen me sticking out in that vail and it sparked them to research the practice of vailing and they start wearing a vail to mass. I had one of the young women not known that red Vail was me and start a conversation with me over one of my basic antique veils only to tell me about the red Vail at mass and how it got them thinking then they where surprised when I sheepishly admitted that the in your face red Vail was me which prompted them to encourage me to continue using my feast day red vail.

@EMB123 read jp2’s theology of the body. then we can talk. it’s not from the era of veiling either but women are very substantially revered as women, and as mothers and in a specific relation to god different from that of men, looking to mary as our guide to making ourselves, our lives, fully devoted vessels for what is gods will. just as men are lauded for their virtue in maleness when he is shouldering responsibility and physical labors burdens for his family’s survival and growth, his ability to protect and defend as a man is a different virtue than the role woman plays in christian theology which all comes down to the unit of the family and the roles of the sexes in that relationship that has been the formation of our modern society for most our history as humans.

As to those who say this is an example of the advantage of celibate clergy, I would say that there are plenty of celibate priests who would charitably confront a woman for wearing a veil. So while there are many great reasons for celibate clergy, I don’t think this is one at all. Our arms, knees and heads should be covered if we are doing it for reverence of Jesus. Just as a comment to women wearing a sleeve to the elbow 50 years ago, with no air conditioning, think about before that, dresses to the ankle, sleeves to the wrist, men wore suits and did not remove the jackets and there was no air conditioning. 😁 We can all stand to suffer a little more for our Saviour. @@kentfrederick8929 Both men & women are supposed to dress modestly in church i.e. no shorts/short sleeves for men, no immodest clothing on women and veiling for women. It sounds Islamic to you because Protestantism is younger than Islam, but Christianity is much older than Islam. When you see an Islamic head covering, where do you think they got those traditions? It was all Jewish and Christian influence. Also look at what Eastern Catholic nuns wear - you may do a double take thinking it may be Islamic, but guess who was dressing like that first? As for the suffering thing, if you completely removed the theology and went with a purely secular psycholocial stance, suffering well is good for you and this is a truth as old as time. Jesus did not suffer on the Cross to spare us the discomfort of being too hot in a jacket sometimes. We are to take up our CROSS (sufferings) and follow Him. I don't know what brand of Protestantism you subscribe to but it sounds very theologically watered down.

I'd like to defend deacon wives! The wife of the deacon at the novus ordo I entered the church in was such a lovely Christ-loving woman! While she didn't veil herself, she loved my veiling! I'm sure there are many wives of other deacons who humbly embrace their husband's place in the church!

I attend an Ordinariate parish where probably 95% of the women are veiled. We have a small sign in the back of the church saying, "we veil the sacred" with loaner veils for anyone who would like to borrow one. I read once that because the Church is the bride of Christ, and the Church is made up of its members, the women become the visible representation of this relationship as bride and historically veiled themselves in church. I think this is a beautiful tradition that is definitely making a comeback. With regards to color, I don't really see the women at my parish sticking to black and white veils according to marital status. Many times they coordinate with the clothing or the liturgical colors.

Before I got married when I first started veiling no one in my parish did I didn’t care about people thought so I would wear one but my family did my parents made me sit away from them during mass because they were embarrassed of me it’s nice to see it’s becoming more mainstream now that I’m married and in TLM I love veiling and I’m happy I’m not alone in doing so 🥰

I am heartbroken to hear of this as a deacon’s wife. I am proud to wear my vail and many people have come up asking information about why I wear my vail. I explain to them the history and beauty of wearing a vail. Be more like Mary less like the world wants you to look like. I love my vail 🙏

The color of the veil is not restricted by married or unmarried. Once a woman decides to veil I believe it should be a commitment, if you decide it's the right thing to do then make sure you have a veil at all times. I keep one in the glove compartment of the car and 2 in my purse at all times.

Traditionally (lower case t), married wear dark, singles wear white veils. Helps avoid confusion and helps the single men. Very practical.

Wow, just like the start of this conversation: never heard of Amber Rose. My gracious, God bless you, Amber, what a gem! I want her to know that her presence and viewpoints give men like me great confidence and hope in the world we live in; that there are in fact women out there who want to please God lovingly, submissively, and righteously (to the best of our will). They don't embody selfishness, but rather employ selflessness. They do not ratify judgement onto others, but rather imitate themselves like Christ Jesus. They do not seek praise, but rather give it to *_Him_* . All the more, they do not want to be worshipped, they want to worship *_Him_* Women I've met in my life haven't aimed to do that at all, nor carry themselves in such a way. They're absorbed in looks, desires, and try so hard to please others...that's just such a miserable way to live! It's one of the lesser important reasons, but a reason all the same, that I am discerning Roman Catholicism. The primary reason (of course) is to grow closer to God, and understand and surrender to His will AMAP (As Much As Possible). And in it, grow in faith among truer believers. I know not all Catholics are saints, but nor are all Protestants either. So, anyways: Amen to you both, God bless Amber and Matt, seriously: this was very uplifting to hear and see! :) Also, that Deacon's wife should be ashamed and repent immediately. God have mercy on her, as well. Cheers, be safe everyone. And all the more, God bless you all, and keep you.

I started wearing veil this year, but I still don't get the part of "taking the attention away from you"... many people have told me "you get a lot of attention with your veil... why do you wear it" 😢

Lots of single women wear black and white veils, it really has nothing to do with marital status. It is reverence and obedience also humility. At least that is what I have been taught.

I had considered veiling for a while as many women in our church veiled. But, I wasn't sure when to make it happen. So, last year, I did the Louis de Montfort consecration to to Jesus through Mary. I mentioned I was doing the consecration to the priest and he asked if I was going to bring flowers to Our Lady that day. As soon as he said it, I knew that my gift to Mary would be to start wearing a veil. My heritage is Eastern European. So, I wear colored scarves or as we call them babushkas. I recently got a bunch of babushkas that were worn by my Grandmothers and great grandmothers. They are nothing fancy, just everyday women's scarves that with traditional floral patterns. I love wearing them and having that connection to my heritage. I have had to buy a couple of simple lace veils for the summer as the babushkas get hot. I recommend the Etsy shop RuttUSA for some of the nicest and most affordable ones you will find.

When I was a child in Catholic school all women covered their heads in Church. One time when I forgot my mantilla for school Mass the nun bobby pinned a Kleenex to my head. I never forgot that. And when I reverted I remembered that and have always veiled.

The bobby pins and the kleenex is exactly why the rule about head covering was done away with. They finally saw it for the neurotic tic that it was.

When I was in college I knew a girl who never cut her hair from childhood. When I asked why, she cited the St Paul excerpt that women should be veiled....I wasn't as plugged in a the time, but if it happened today my burning question would be, 'so if Paul says to veil, then why not...ya know....veil?'

It’s one thing if we are in a situation where all we can wear to Mass is casual clothing, but under ordinary circumstances, we should at least dress a little better than that.

I've never heard of unmarried women wearing a white veil and married wearing black. My mother wore a white veil in the spring and Summer and a black veil throughout the Winter through Lent.
