Attorney Bryan Stevenson, author of the bestseller "Just Mercy," has helped to save 145 wrongly-convicted prisoners from execution, but these days the man behind Montgomery, Alabama's National Memorial for Peace and Justice might be better known his other job: educating Americans about the legacy of slavery and racial violence in this country. Stevenson talks with correspondent David Pogue about confronting history as a first step in healing, and gives a tour of the brand new Legacy Museum in Montgomery.

God bless this wise, brave man! As an old, retired white teacher, it’s difficult to comprehend the cruelty of some people! I know these things to be true…We must LEARN from our mistakes! Our children must be taught TRUTHS. “Mistakes are opportunities to learn.” “ The truth will set us free.” Thanks for devoting you brilliance to make the world a better place!

I remember my grandmother pointing out to me places in the pavement on each of 4 corners in downtown Dallas. At one time there was a double archway made of granite that rose above the intersection about 5 feet. It was built to commemorate some event. She said a black man was hung from it around 1910 or so. I was about 14 when she told me this as we stood in the middle of downtown Dallas in 1979. It shook me and I could tell that it really affected her. We have so much to atone for. Anyone who truly loves this nation will not shy away from these horrible truths. We must see them, remember them.

Yes, and LEARN from them. Thank you for passing on your grandmother’s words. Knowledge of the TRUTH is what will help in the UNDERSTANDING of HISTORY.

I have been to this memorial and it is a valid remembrance of what happened to people who were lynched by their fellow citizens. It is heart-rending.

I read "Just Mercy" and was furious at the treatment Mr.McMillan received. Just unbelievable. I was ashamed to be a citizen of a country that condoned such abuse of authority. I mean I was FURIOUS!

The monument is very daunting. The descent the viewer takes to view the entire piece, seems to represent the descent of our morality to have allowed such atrocities.

As with individuals, you have to face the painful truth before you can be healed and liberated. Thank you Bryan Stevenson!! That said, we have the most punative society in the world, except for the rich. They do whatever they want and get away with it.

~ "But that's different... It's easier for Americans to memorialize something that was done to 𝕌𝕊 than it is to memorialize something we did to others." Therein lies the rub, Mr. Pogue. 𝙒𝙚 (Black people of the United States) are Americans. These atrocities were/are committed against/done to "Americans". Toni Morrison said it best when stating, “In this country, American means white. Everybody else has to hyphenate.” That, in fact, is the irony here.

It is called a lack of evidence to prove him guilty. You can’t jail a human for life or execute them without evidence that they are guilty.

the point is that the person was killed without due process of the law. and innocent until proved guilty. likewise with racism you are not a racist until proved to be a racist or you demonstrate that you are a racist.
