My minimum adds both full front and rear suspension. Where I live there's too many people not paying attention for me to risk being out on the streets. Therefore you're having a contend with curbs, cracks, and a plethora of uneven terrain. Ideally a 750W-1000W @ peak motor, mid-drive, hydraulic disc brakes with larger rotors, 28+ MPH Class 3 capable, low step through or it doesn't matter, 50+ mile range PAS 2, and I think all bikes that are capable of class 3 must have day running hardwired front lights and rear brake lights. I'm hopeful going towards 2025 and beyond that there's more direct drive systems in addition to internal gear shifting. In addition to other technologies like ABS and automatic downshifting at stop, etc. However the biggest lacking that I've seen is the infrastructure support for bicycling. Some communities embrace it and others have ignored it.

I don’t think mid-drives will ever be a big portion of the market here. They are objectively more efficient at delivering power, but they are so much more popular in Europe because they have such a low legal power level (250W) that riders really want to get out what power they can. Here, we can go 750W and really, for all intents and purposes can go a lot higher than that as long as you don’t show off too much in public. I agree with you that most people will like hub motors better unless they are really into heavy duty mountain biking. Mid-drives also many times have required maintenance, and that’s a turn off to most people.

My max budget was around $1500, but I wanted something robust and with decent speed that can climb hills, because of most of my riding will be on streets with traffic so I spent the extra money for a 20 amp battery, 60 volt system with full suspension and big hydraulic brakes. It may turn out to be an overkill, but I figure I would get many years of use from an overbuilt bike.

Hi Russ, still waiting and working on my Ocelot Pro! It has throttle working now but no pedal assist! Waiting now on my cadence sensor to come in. Hopefully that will fix it and I can get back to riding. Haven’t been able to ride now for a month! Love your videos! Keep on producing!

Great video as always. European viewer here, I went with a lowstep (step thru) trek verve+ 1, was initially leaning towards more inexpensive bikes but after doing some research I really wanted something durable since the choice where I live was essentially between BaFang front hub drives, or more expensive mid drives, so I went with a Bosch mid drive. I didn't really like how front drives felt either, felt a little scary being pulled forward like that. I really like being able to use the gears together with the motor, its real fun imo. I have no problems in hills either despite being a bit overweight. Its given me a ton of exercise too, sometimes I accidentally forget to turn the pedal assist on and not really notice it for a while lmao. All in all I'm extremely happy with my decision, it basically feels like a regular bicycle with the ability of having bionic legs if I raise the pedal assist lol. I do wish motors above 250W continuous effect were legal here though.

the step over have an extra bar to attach thing to. My bike has a 750W motor and a 20A controller. But the controller is programmed to not go over 10A and I can't change it. So, in reality, I have 500W of power. In the past, batteries have caught on fire. This is the reason they now have an inbuild "Battery management system" that prevents over charging or over discharging. Technically speaking, a Li-ion battery should not be charged at more than 3A. With newer BMS cards, some can be charged/discharged at higher rates without damaging the cells.

Add torque arms to heavy bikes for rear hub fat bikes. Mu rear wheel came loose and wrecked the motor wires. Aluminum frame drop out can't handle the torque and needs additional support.

You can get the same results as shifting while peddling on a Mid-Drive Bike by shifting power settings instead of shifting gears.

UK & European legal motor limit is 250W but mine is Bafang whom I have been told do not have a 250W motor only 350W so it is downrated to meet approval however it peaks at 630W. All electrical components on my bike are Bafang and my PAS is also different, PAS 1 gives 20% assistance throughout the whole speed range meaning on flat it is possible to get maximum speed on level 1, this of course gives you better battery usage/longer range. The one thing I noticed you did not mention is tyre size. For speed you can go for bigger tyres whereas smaller 20" are better for hill climbing and manoeuvrability. Also width, if you are only riding on roads and paths up to 2.5" are best, if you are going to want to go off-road bigger tyres, 4" are better but they give more additional drag so are harder to get moving and if you run out of battery can be difficult pedal home.

If you’re the type who likes to get a new bike every few years, consider getting a suspension seatpost in a smaller diameter and using shims. That way, you can move it to your new bike and only need to get a new shim if the bike requires a different diameter. Linkage-type suspension seatposts like the SR Suntour NCX, Redshift or Kinekt are much less likely to tweak your knees if you like to pedal, unlike the telescoping type. They don’t drastically reduce the distance between the saddle and bottom bracket.

Good informative video but I don't think you mentioned tires. Tire diameter, width, pressure add/subtract to rider comfort and whether roads or trails will be enjoyed. Another thing to consider is cruise control as an option. Once again, thanks.

Russ, does your bike have the Push assist? My mountain E-Bike has it. You push the side button for about 5 seconds and then the bike sort of launches forward a tad to let you know you are in pushing mode. Comes in handy when you have to push your heavy E-Bike up hill/ wooded areas etc. makes it a cinch to push when you can't ride. My E-Bike is a smlro, high end mountain E-Bike. Purchased it from Ali Express. Best purchase I have made, other then that it is too big for my 5'7" (female) and a men's mountain E-Bike 🥰

I have a high end e Bike that i love! My first E-Bike i purchased. It is a 2000 Watt 26" mountain bike 1000 Watts on each motor, the front tire and the back tire. Love the power it has, but it is too high for my instep. I have been looking for a 24" (a female 5'7"), with a through step. When getting off the bike and leaning sideways, my tippy toes ONLY reach the ground, with the saddle on the lowest setting. And that really scares me. So i started looking for 24" E-Bike step over, couldn't find one with the same power! I also looked at many step through E-Bike with 2000 Watts of power (the power is important to me). Again, I am at dead ends. Since I live in the woods out in the countryside 22 Miles away from town, hilly areas and have to haul 200 pounds of chicken feed, I wanted the power more than step through/ over. My E-Bike has dual suspension, it's like riding a Cadillac🥰, comfortable and easy. It has hydraulic brakes, and fat tires. Yes, it is a heavy E-Bike, but well worth the $1600.00 it cost me three years ago. Now i have found a couple of 2000 Watts step through, but they cost more Money (around $2000.00) and they are not really useful for Snow traveling. Or for heavy load hauling. So looking for three years now for the perfect E-Bike for me, i haven't found it yet. However, i found a step through Cargo E-Bike, but it doesn't have any suspension, and it ONLY has 750 Watts of power...bummer.... My "perfect" mountain E-Bike came with two (2) batteries, and this step through comes ONLY with one (1) battery. To me, after experiencing the awesome power of my mountain E-Bike, I am hesitant to try a E-Bike with lesser power. I gotta haul my chicken feed (200 pounds), 22 miles to home and at the moment prices are way too high for my taste. My biggest Bike i have ever owned was a step through mountain bike wit 24" tires back in the early 90's, and I loved it. It was called a Cruiser and so comfortable to ride. So, i am now saving my pennies to get a Cargo step through E-Bike, that can haul my chickenfeed instead of a mountain E-Bike 😭

One thing about ebike reviews that never seems to be covered is the battery charger. I fly RC with lipo batteries and my charger cost me over £150 \ $300 and is finel tuned. The 'bricks' that come with these ebikes seem to retail for about £30 \ $60 tops and it concerns me, they are very basic, do not monitor the charge cycle nor measure the charge curve to prevent overcharging. It would help if more info on these supplied chargers was given and alternatives.

I don't want to sound facetious, but exactly how would the e-bike regulations be enforced? Are there e-bike patrols that would check the class and power of your bike? I know if you are speeding down a mixed use path and are blowing people over, you might be suspect, but the average street rider wouldn't be cited, right? (Alot of great info for those considering getting an e-bike!!!)

Thanks for all your excellent videos! I have 2 Lectric XP 1.0 (step over) and after multiple rides I'm ready for a better step thru bike. I'm looking at the Magicycle Deer 20" cuz I live in a hilly area, and with lots of offroad trails. But at 95 pounds I'm a bit worried the bike is too heavy. Any ebike models you would suggest for a shorter person who uses the bike to commute in town (hills!) but also go on our awesome off road trails? Russ - I know you are in the Chicago suburbs. I am as well. I find that most trails by me say no motorized vehicles. Are you finding that this excludes or includes e-bike? I have my hey bike ranger S coming in late June and looking forward to getting out on the road but am disappointed in how many trails are being excluded (I think)

Well, always check your local authorities to be sure, but my interpretation is that they mean gas powered motor vehicles like dirt bikes, mopeds, motorcycles and cars. But I am not the law so don’t take my word for it. Do yourself a favor and ask your local police and forest preserve officer to be sure. In the meantime, I will continue doing what I do but you make your own decisions. Be prepared for people to call you out on it though. It happens more than you think. Because of this, I find it easier to just ride safe side streets as often as I can. Less hassle. Although there is always the guy who has to yell at you even when you are in the street. Makes no sense.

By the way, I was on the bike path a year or so ago and a motorcycle cop was also. He waved me to pass him. So obviously he had no problem with it. Later, I spoke with him several times more on the street and he seemed fine with me riding where I ride.

Magicycle ebikes will go to 28 mph on the throttle or pedal for their Cruiser, Ocelot Pro, Deer 26 and 20 inch models. The Himiway D7 will do it too if you unlock it. Most of these bikes will require you to go into the menu of the bike to unlock this potential.
