I think the most confusing part is what's the difference between waiting, loading, stopping, and parking. Basically: Waiting: This means stopping the vehicle for a prolonged period, what most of us would think of as parking, but I think it's preferred to call it waiting to cover people leaving their vehicles as well as staying with them. Loading: This is what delivery drivers do, constant loading or unloading of goods. Nipping into the shop for 5 minutes to quickly buy something doesn't count. However passengers do count, so you can stop to drop-off or pick-up passengers. Stopping: This means stopping the vehicle at all for any reason other than something preventing your progress along the road, like traffic lights, junction, queue, etc. Parking: Generally not used "officially"; see waiting. So: Double yellows = No waiting = No parking, but loading/unloading of good and passengers is fine (as long as the pavement dashes for loading restrictions aren't present). Double reds (or clearway) = No stopping = No parking, no waiting, and no loading. ----- Don't forget the single white line at the side of the road, this just denotes the edge of the carriageway (to help you avoid grass verges/ditches), but often misused by councils to deter parking.
