The problem is more and more roads in London are turning into 20mph which once were 30mph. So the street lights rule of thumb doesn't work here anymore unfortunately. You constantly have to check the new speed limits every road you turn onto. So many have received speeding tickets lately for assuming it's 30mph.
@JoshRamwell3 жыл бұрын
Thanks fast lane, Yes if you are in an area with lots of 20 mph zones this method won't work. Something that I keep in mind, is that. If there are street lights but no speed limit, I'd always assume 20 just because going the lower speed limit that you assume causes less harm than going higher than the one you assume. Although if there are no speed limit signs then it is pretty obvious to me now that it is 30mph since if it was 20mph there would most likely be road humps and other traffic calming measures.

The last left turn you made, the speed limit of 40 mph was written on the road surface.😂 passed my test in 1992 and the rules have changed so much, I was taught that the distance between lamp posts dictated the road speed 30mph lamp posts were closer together than those above 30 mph . I still get a little confused on dual carriageways that have no barrier in the middle 60 or 70 mph if not stated otherwise. The only thing that hasnt changed much is the national speed limit on rural roads again unless otherwise stated, I live in a rural area and most of the rural roads are 60mph but many people dont seem to be aware of this and drive at 30mph, I certainly didnt think that you could fail your test for going to slow in a 60mph zone surely it is safer than doing 60mph if you are unsure esspecially as rural roads are hardly ever congested. fortunately modern cars are fitted with speed limiters which are worth using in 20 and 30 zones as it is more difficult in some cars to maintain a slower speed, without constantly checking the dashboard and taking your eye off the road. I wonder if you woiuld be permitted to use the limiter controls in a driving test.

Driving safely within individual capabilities is far more important in everyday situations. The driving test is ticking all the boxes. 6:03 This is a little confusing here and therefore needs some clarification. You state that the examiner would give you a minor at worst for travelling at 30mph in a 40mph zone, but you would still pass your driving test. However, you then state had you gone 40mph when you hadn't seen a speed sign, then you'd have failed your test. In reality, you wouldn't fail your test for doing 40mph in a 40mph zone simply because you hadn't seen a speed sign or there wasnt one. Now, I fully understand that you meant in a different scenario on a different road where the speed limit is 30mph, but saying this at that point without that clarification is very misleading. It can be understood as; if you do 40mph in a 40mph zone but haven't seen a speed sign confirming this, then you will fail your test. That being said; great advice for the most part and exactly how I was taught many years ago.

Roads which display the National Speed Limit sign years ago would be regarded as unrestricted in terms of the speed you could drive. 100mph would be legal. Speed limits need a legal process to be followed for them to be imposed for every related stretch of road. At some point it was decided that unrestricted use of speed was unacceptable so a National Speed Limit was adopted and imposed. No need for a legal process for every stretch of road to be implemented as a blanket speed limit of 70 mph everywhere the sign appeared. During an international fuel crisis, early 1970's? in order to save fuel a blanket 50mph speed limit on every road in the country was introduced to save fuel. After a few weeks the economy was considered and an easement to 60mph for all such roads came in. Then the fuel shortage was sorted out by increasing fuel prices and the National Speed limit areas returned to 70mph with the exception of two way road where a large saving was made in road casualties. So they retained 60 mph on two way roads. The 30mph would be very expensive to sign post as you would need to post accurately all local roads with correct signs and if the signs were not accurately posted exactly to the regulations the police would not be able to legally enforce them. The enforceable limit would defer to the National Speed Limit or in other words a small local council estate might have its 30mph roads suddenly filling with drivers driving up tp 60 mph and not be able to be prosecuted on the basis of excess speed.

@milanpaudel31032 жыл бұрын
The best option in that situation is, if you do see road humps then maybe assume it is 20mph. Since if you went 30mph and it was 20mph that would be a fail, although if you went 20mph and it was 30mph then you'd only get 1 driving fault for that.

quiet a few residential areas are 20mph....do 30mph you will be speeding with that assumption

I think an examiner would’ve failed you at the end there because you have to stop at a stop sign, not crawl at 1mph

9:19 ... I was told that it is mandatory to make a full stop. Edging, slow rolling wouldn't cut it at all so you're spot on lol
@keith64003 жыл бұрын
@@skeptical1705 Correct the legal requirement is two fold. You must stop. You must stop at the line. Therefore you cannot stop beyond the line. You cannot stop well short of the line where you cannot see enough to see if it is safe to go and then come out on the roll without stopping.

Stop calling it a 'speed limit' and instead call it a 'safety limit' Changing the way drivers think is the first step to safer driving.
