Princess Mononoke is a complex story, with no simple right and wrong. The boy is meant to see with eyes unclouded. So are we. The woman rescues people - prostitutes, lepers, etc -- and gives them a home and work ... but she attacks the forest. She is neither pure evil nor pure good. There needs to be harmony between humans and forest -- neither anti-human (like the wolf girl and the boars) nor anti-forest (like the humans). There are also demons in the forest as well as killers among men -- both the forest and men have dark sides. The boy meets, sees, both sides. Seeing with eyes unclouded should bring harmony, peace, between warring factions. The woman at the end will try again, but differently this time. This is a film to watch more than once.

There are said to be 8 million gods in Japan's ancient religion, Shinto.(There are many different objects of worship such as mountains, oceans, rocks, trees, natural phenomena, great people, animals, etc.) Therefore, it is a culture that tolerates various religions such as Buddhism, Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. Also, if there is no Founder, there are no doctrines or precepts. This is because the gods only imagined the Japanese archipelago, and it was not the gods who created the Japanese people. Humans were born without the knowledge of the gods. Gods are supernatural beings and beings to be feared, so in the past it was thought that gods could not be seen directly. Even though Japanese people place great value on religious events, the reason why they claim to be ``atheists'' is because polytheism has continued in Japanese culture for thousands of years, and it has become a part of Japanese people's subconscious beliefs. There seems to be a contradiction in thought.

The West really has to return to hand drawn animation. It has a specialness and magic about it that 3D animation simply can't replicate.

Actually, Princess Mononoke was I think the first Ghibli film to incorporate computer imagery. I don't think many sequences had computer aided art but it is in there... I agree though. 3D is a bit like a trick pony, animation-wise.

Honestly, Hayao Miyazaki, doesn't know how to make a bad film and I would highly recommend and encourage you to watch his entire filmography, or at least everything starting with Nausicaa: of the Valley of the Wind and the birth of Studio Ghibli, to his latest and most adult film, The Wind Rises, and everything in between! Even the films I didn't expect to like or have much interest in, or even assumed would be too childish, I have absolutely fallen in love with each and every single one. The man is an absolute master storyteller, director and animator.

Hayao Miyazaki has always had a love of environmental themes, all the way back to Nausicaa (which I highly recommend). You will see a lot of very similar character designs in his work too, which gives all of his work a charming familiarity. Though the original Japanese is great, Mononoke has a stellar dub cast. Disney has some pretty good line-ups for their dubs of his features too, so you really can't go wrong with any version. For a pre-Ghibli Miyazaki animated feature - Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro

02:00 In Japanese religion, TATARI GAMI are gods or spirits that are feared and avoided, but they are believed to become powerful guardian deities if worshiped carefully. It is also said that whether you receive blessings or disasters befall you depends on your faith. God and the daemon are two sides of the same coin. In Japanese religion, gods are neither creators nor protectors of humans. A supernatural presence and a fearful neighbor.

Great movie! I'd do subtitles for future Miyazaki movies. Get the full cultural effect. And some of things they are saying seem different from my version. The best thing about this movie is that it sees things with eyes unclouded. Nobody is completely a villain.

Weird, in the translation they made the girl from the village into Ashitaka's sister, but in the original Japanese she's his fiancee.
@Ycekhold
@Ycekhold 2 жыл бұрын
That was intentional, since it was decided that Ashitaka leaving his significant other behind to go on this quest wouldn't have gone over as well with American audiences--cultural differences and such.

@@KaregoAt Miyazaki specifically gave Neil Gaiman his blessing to adapt what he wanted to make the movie more palatable for a different audience. And, like... the change is a good change. Making it Ashitaka's sister makes it way less weird and distracting when he falls for San like, a week later.

@@legendaccount3247 A japanese person giving "his blessing" to another business man isn't what you think it is. In the japanese work place, it is expected that you give it your all, no matter what task is assigned to you. Miyazaki is not necessarily aware of every single change that happened in the english script. Authenticity is more important than what you consider to be a "good change", just because you don't like something. It's simply racism, as in "this is too japanese for me, I can only enjoy it if an american makes some changes to it".

Princess Mononoke takes place in Japan between 1336 and 1573. It seems like a happy ending, but after that, Japan entered the Sengoku period, and wars raged for about 140 years (1467 to 1615).

EBOSHI. A calm and collected woman who leads the Tatara group at the foot of a deep mountain. She built a smelter where she boiled the iron sand she obtained from the river using the firewood she obtained from scraping the mountain, and used it to pound iron and create stone fire arrows, which became the source of the current conflict. There is no mercy for those who oppose her, and she will even abandon the people of Tataraba if necessary. She is also not afraid to clear forests and kill gods in order to make their lives more prosperous. On the other hand, in addition to buying trafficked girls and giving them work at the Tatara factory (steelworks), which was originally forbidden to women, they also treat sick people who have been infected with infectious diseases and are persecuted as human beings. He has a compassionate heart and is respected and admired by the people of Tataraba. Before creating Tataraba, she was a shirabyoshi (a shrine maiden, maiko, and entertainer at Shinto rituals), but was kidnapped by the leader of Wakou (Chinese or Japanese pirates) and forced to become his wife, but she collaborated with Gonza. It is said that she killed her husband, the pirate leader, in a form similar to rebellion, and left the pirates. When she left the pirate world, she is said to have brought her latest weapon, a stone fire arrow (a prototype of a gun or a similar weapon), back to Japan from the Ming Dynasty of China with her own hands.

mmm, i just had to remember that it's literally a movie from a different culture and all the things i didn't understand was chocked up to cultural differences i will say that the most inhuman part is when ashitaka calls san beautiful and she gets dumbstruck, but hey we only got like 2 hours to rock and roll and she starts out openly hostile to other humans. if the girl doesn't blush at being called pretty we're gonna be here all day

The localization for the English dub did some, shall we say, "interesting" mess-ups in this movie, so I recommend watching it again in Japanese with subtitles and comparing the two versions. For instance, the girl who gives Ashitaka her necklace to remember her in the beginning by is actually his fiancé, not his sister. Or when Moro speaks to Ashitaka on the cliff and gets mad at him, it's for a different, less stupid reason ('how dare you speak to a god like that' is kinda shallow and glosses over the point of the conversation, which is San.) There are more, and I think it's worth checking to see how the dub sometimes transforms or even downright simplifies the intentions and messages of certain scenes. (Side note: I'm not trying to say that the dub is bad, or makes the movie unwatchable, or anything. I just think these choices made by the localizers are not always the ones I would've made in their place, which is another way of saying that all of this reflects my opinion, and mine alone)

15:06 No. Actually, that's Keith David (he was also the narrator at the beginning). The English dub of this movie had an all-star cast -- in addition to Keith, there was Billy Crudup (Ashitaka), Claire Danes (San), Gillian Anderson (Moro), Minnie Driver (Eboshi), Billy Bob Thornton (Jigo), and Jada Smith (Toki).

@@stefanforrer2573 It's not surprising in the least. Just bc someone is a famous actor, doesn't mean they'll be good at voice acting. Complete opposite, usually. It's a very different skill, and I wish American dubbing companies started using the actual talent available over there, instead of recognizable big name actors.

"What was happening??" Basically, long story short, Miyazaki remade Nausicaa, and made the characters less likable. 😛 (A LOT of this movie's reputation was created by it being the first Ghibli shown in US theaters, except for an under-the-radar Totoro: Disney had had a big hit dubbing "Kiki's Delivery Service" on VHS, and when they made the deal to distribute Ghibli, Ghibli insisted that Mononoke get a US theatrical release...Er, NOT the first movie you'd want to show to anime/Ghibli first timers fresh off of Kiki. 🤦‍♂)
