Sprits are very important in Japanese folklore, the Shinto concept of "kami" (which only loosely translates to "God") considers that everything is imbued with a spirit. In some cases, those spirits are old and powerful and can cause great grief if you do not honor them. They will build shrines to the Kami just about everywhere. Some of them are like formal temples but a great many of them are like small cabinets or tiny stone houses.

There are said to be 8 million gods in Japan's ancient religion, Shinto. Therefore, it is a culture that tolerates various religions such as Buddhism, Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. There is also no Bible or commandments. This is because the gods only imagined the Japanese archipelago, and it was not the gods who created the Japanese people. Humans were born without the knowledge of the gods. Gods are supernatural beings and beings to be feared, so in the past it was thought that gods could not be seen directly.

In the Ainu language, they're called Kamui. Since this film is about the Emishi / Jomon people, I thought I would add this comment.

Funny you immediately clocked the Breath of the Wild vibes lol the way BOTW and TOTK are so heavily inspired by Princess Mononoke is so lovely you can tell everyone involved took great care to really honor it. Loved the reaction! I first watched this film when I was 12 and it's stuck with me ever since for the past 13 years now. It's one of the few movies that I can rewatch heavily and it'll never lose it's spark for me

This one is definitely my favourite! I don't usually recommend the oldies but with how much you liked Princess Mononoke, you might like Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. It's older but it's got that big other world feel and the premise is a lot closer to this one than most of the other movies I would say! But while Princess Mononoke is set fantastically in Japan's feudal past, Nausicaä is almost fantastically post-apocalyptic in timeline. Also, the old "religions" or beliefs in East Asia were very grounded in gods and spirits being intertwined with the nature of the world, so you see a lot of these kinds of stories in East Asian storytelling 😊 What makes wolves particularly significant in Japanese stories is the fact that wolves have been considered extinct in Japan since the early 1900s.

@@Fresc0 Good to hear! "Howl's Moving Castle" is not the super sad one that everyone is warning you about. The super sad one is probably "Grave of the Fireflies" I'm still looking forward to your reaction to "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" It's one of the older movies (and the sound and visual quality reflects that a bit), the message is similar to "Princess Mononoke" and is set in a post apocalyptic time. I find most Ghibli Movies themes to be "choose peace and respect others" Which is a VERY GOOD lesson that everyone should learn in many aspects!

This movie is absolutely stunning, but I think part of why I love it is the script translation - Neil Gaiman, noted fantasy author, took the lead on it, and he made some tweaks on a few concepts, but because of his genre background, he still preserved the majesty of the whole piece. Edited to add - Ashitaka is said to be of the Emishi people, hence Jigo's comment about no one seeing them in 500 years - in real history, that particular people was wiped out around the turn of the millennium, and this story is set sometime in the Muromachi period (1336 to 1573). Ashitaka's village would have had to live in utter secrecy to survive that long, and losing him would be the end of their culture for good.

Nice to meet you. I am Japanese. Let me answer the question at the beginning. About the reason why "spirits" and "mystical forces of nature" are often involved in Japanese anime, including Ghibli films. To answer this question, it is necessary to understand Japan's unique religion and worldview that have existed since ancient times. It's very difficult to explain concisely. First of all, Japanese people have valued the idea of animism since ancient times. nature worship. We have a unique Japanese religion called "Shinto." The idea is that "everything in this world has a soul(spirits)." In fact, it is said that there are eight million gods in Japan. ( For us, they should be called ''KAMI'' rather than ''God.'' There are times when you should call it ''Youkai''.) Sometimes they are gods, sometimes demons, sometimes friends. In other words, in Japan, nature has been something to be feared and worshiped since ancient times. In fact, the objects of worship are often giant trees, megaliths, mountains. For example, Mt.Fuji! Also, inorganic objects and animals are sometimes considered gods or demons. (In English, it can only be translated as "religion," "god," and "devil," but strictly speaking, they are slightly different concepts.) My English skill is very low😅Sorry for not being able to explain it well. I'm really curious about how you would react if you watched the latest Japanese anime. For example, Attack on Titan and Vinland Saga.......

I love this film bc it invites you to see the nuance in the idea of human vs nature, and gives you the opportunity to realize that it’s not that at all because it nature vs nature. There is no one good side bc neither is wholly good or bad. Nature is not some utopia, it is survival of the fittest and so far humans are the fittest, which is why they dominate as they do. They are not separate from nature they are apart of nature and it’s unending battle for being the best. That’s why the spirit of the forest never stepped in to help, because in its eyes the humans were doing what any dominant species would do, dominate.

Yeah I find that many people and reactor don't really get the message, thinking that humans are mostly bad, But people at IronTown are fleeing the rest of the human world and try to defend themselves just as the forest's gods, they have much more in common with them than the Emperor. They aren't as greedy as they may seem, they live difficult and modest life trying to survive. At the end when the Deer god die and heal the forest he also heals the Humans lepers.

Hello, seem like you really like Princess Mononoke, this is also my top 1, but there is also a top 1 for me which is quite an older Ghibili film, it is called “Nausicaä of the valley of the wind” there is a reason why this amazing movie is not more talked about. The reason is that when Nausicaä was going to the US, they changed the title and the poster, which for some reason Hollywood doing Hollywood things, the poster for some reason was a Star Wars esque poster with robots shooting laser blasters. Imo Nausicaä is one of the best ghibili has ever made, but of course it is quite old, made it so that it was not popular

This is so much better than Avatar.. Prince Ashitaka is better protagonist than Jake Sully. Ashitaka is negotiator/diplomat/bridge between Nature and Humans. Jake is just plain traitor to one side. Next logical step is should be Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. But my personal favorite is Porco Rosso )) Also, most sad from Studio Ghibli is Grave of the fireflies.. But it is a tough one because it's most realistic one. Howls Moving Castle is a fairy tale =)

44:14 This is similar to most people's reaction when they watch a "Lord of the Rings" extended cut movie. Even if you break them up in half or thirds, you're so invested in the story and characters that you don't realize how much time has pasted! ;D Also: I recently found you and I have really been enjoying your level of commentary and editing. I'm Also thoroughly enjoying your magical trip into Japanese Lore and Studio Ghibli's beautiful worlds! I wouldn't mind if you paused the movie more so you can word you questions more concisely. I'm here for your take on things, not watching a movie I've already seen over again. :) Request: PLEASE do a reaction to Lord of the Rings if you haven't yet! Especially if you have only seen the Theatrical versions of the movies. LotR reaction Tips: IF you have never seen them, then you may choose to watch the first movies in Theatrical or extended versions, but the 2nd and 3rd movies you HAVE TO watch in extended version. For the final movie: You're going to need tissues. One reason or another, you WILL need them and you can thank me later for the forewarning. Seriously: chop up the films into smaller parts if the screen time is too intimidating! Most KZbinrs do, and we fans are MORE then happy to watch 6-9 parts if that's what it takes to get another person to experience this Epic! There's a lot of "Lore dump" and "behind the scenes/making of" that a LOT of people in the comment section will try to tell you about. The stuff is legitimately interesting! So make sure to tell/remind people to not post spoilers in the comment section without a spoiler warning. Not just to "The Lord of the Rings" movies, but "The Hobbit" movies too. Just in case you want to watch "The Hobbit" movies (on or off KZbin, doesn't matter to me). PS: You reaction to the beautifully deep voice at the beginning of this movie (Keith David) was very much like my reaction to your gentle and resonate voice when I first found you.

It was interesting that you think like Eboshi. Both Eboshi and you said that the way to "cure" Ashitaka's curse is to cut it off. Eboshi is the only pure "western rationalist" in a world dominated by mysticism. Eboshi is often perceived as an evil woman, but that is not the case at all. She gave equal human rights without being bound by convention. She redefined what is known as a "curse" as a "disease" and shattered the convention that "iron hates women." The mystics of the film seem at first glance to be pure good, but at the same time they discriminated against people on the basis of gender and disease. She also knew that if she killed the spirit of the forest (that is, the spirit belief), Princess Mononoke would "become" human. The more you look at it, the more you see that it is a very profound story. And if you are interested in the voice actors, I highly recommend the subtitled version. Dubed is quite good but Subed has a different flavor.

Zelda is styled after San, especially in TOTK. Link and his armor can imitate Ashitaka very closely. Ashitaka's eastern village is imitated by the Sheikah and Kakariko. Malice and Gloom engulf Ganondorf, especially as a boar, but also it corrupts anything it touches. The corrupted Guardians are meant to represent the fully demonized Nago, possibly anything that becomes totally corrupted. These Guardians don't swarm with Malice like Nago, but they are corrupted by it as an extension of Ganon. Satori, the Lord of the Mountain is modeled after the Deer God. The Koroks, invented in 2002, are the kodama. There are horses that copy Yakul's color scheme. Zelda gets embedded in Ganon in BOTW much like San did in Okoto, crying out to Ashitaka. The Zonai, also seem reminiscent of the Forest Spirit.

my goal is to make an illustration of Link....still himself but in Ashitaka's likeness, yelling out to Dark Beast Ganon like Lord Okoto. "Lord Ganon! Calm your fury!" I'm unsure if Link would ever try to reason with Ganon, the man or the beast or the demon king. We've seldom gotten a reasonable man in the role. But, it is a hatred and fury that began Ganon. Lord Okoto's and Nago's hatred are a bit more complex. They were victims, but also susceptible to hate. Ganon was born out of a man destined to carry within him an almost unmanageable hate for the order of things...the gods or anything beyond his reach. So, he has a more one-dimensional and absolute villainy in him at the end of the day, even if the man initially feels a more grounded or mortal sense of hate and dark ambition. @@Fresc0

Hadn't seen much of the new Zelda, but looking up stuff from it after seeing this video, yeah, the new Zelda partly looks like a ripoff of Princess Mononoke XD If you want a "starting" point though, Nausicaa essentially is what I'd view as the "first" of their movies. Despite it being from before Ghibli was properly going it's still basically the same guys doing that movie as the rest of Ghibli and was Miyazaki's first movie of his own that he did. That, Laputa, and this one are probably his most action-packed while Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, and Ponyo are more "the wonders of life" type of movies with Porco Rosso, Spirited Away, and Howl's Moving Castle being sort of an inbetween of those categories and The Wind Rises being more about the spirit of creation itself and how it can be manipulated by whatever's going on in the world at the time. If you want to go by the release dates of Miyazaki's stuff it's: Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (1984) (Though the Manga started in 1982 and ended long after in 1994) Laputa Castle in the Sky (1986) My Neighbor Totoro (1988) Kiki's Delivery Service (1989) Porco Rosso (1992) Princess Mononoke (1997) Spirited Away (2001) Howl's Moving Castle (2004) Ponyo (2008) The Wind Rises (2013) The Boy and the Heron (2023)

日本の東北に もののけ姫の舞台になったかもと思われる場所、外国の人が言う 聖地 があるらしい。 その森でもののけ姫に出てくる風景 植物?を見れるかも

Because unlike Christianity for the most part, spirits is some cultures aren't simple demons, but a tapestry of different relations that can be benevolent, mischievous or something more complex.

I'm Japanese, I feel a little uncomfortable with the translation of "Demon". They are originally gods, and even if they take on the appearance of demons, they are still defined as gods. A fallen god? That's what it feels like. It's difficult even for me as a Japanese😂

I’m also from Japan and about to comment the exact same thing! it’s kind of weird to hear that English version clearly distinguishes god and demon, while in Japanese these two are the same term “kami”. dividing them as two separate beings sounds like a very Christianity-based understanding of the story.

The brief meaning of this wonderful anime is that people are in vain trying to fight or subjugate nature, what gives you life, when you breathe, food, what you eat, a roof over your head, what you build from. After all, with her death will come the death of humanity. Everything is interconnected and fragile, to put it even more simply, nature: I will give you everything I have, man: I will help you with everything I can to save you.
